ThisJazz Piano Tutorial is on ii-V7-I licks and Jazz improvisation exercises.
Learning licks is an important part of improvisation. Not only does it give you a feel for the type of rhythm and phrasing that is typically used in Jazz improvisation, but memorised licks are also a good fall-back option if you run out of ideas while you’re improvising. It’s almost like a get out of jail free card. If you ever make a mistake or get lost during a solo, play a snazzy little lick and people will think you know exactly what you’re doing.
This video covered five Jazz licks played over a ii-V7-I in Bb, so our diatonic scale will be Bb Major. As we play through each of these exercises try to figure out what the is soloist ‘thinking’ while he or she is improvising these licks. While you are playing these look for:
- Arpeggios (including available tensions)
- Scale runs
- Passing notes outside of the scale
- Repetition/sequences/repeating rhythmic patterns
- What note each phrase starts and ends on
- What beat (on or off-beat) each phrases starts and ends on
- The different durations of the notes (eighth notes, triplets, quarter notes, etc)

Thank you for teaching one of the clearest demonstrations of how to use the permitted upper register notes (9s, 11s and 13s) along with the chord tones to create the magic of jazz in licks in the 2-5-1 progression. Its quite a breakthrough for me
perhaps the most underappreciated channel.
I don't comment on tutorials often, but this approach to improv is pure gold. It cuts through all the guesswork, but still allows for plenty of personal creativity in the process.

The best teacher here by far!! Very clear and fluent talking, also combines text of theory during practice, sometimes even gives some historical background or other related subtext of things which makes it interesting. And above all: that posh english accent which gives words some more importance 😂

Accidentals count for the note before which they are placed. Unlike in classical notation, being within the measure. Where we would a restoration sign for repeated following note. As a precaution to avoid confusion. Thanks. Bon PASCO from ARUBA. That's Merry Christmas from ARUBA.
Are modes essentially the same concept but another vocabulary to describe playing the tensions over a chord progression? For the ii, you can play the dorian (9, 11, 13), V you can play the altered scale (b9, 9, #9, b13, 13) and I you can play the lydian (#11)? You go from a play of no tension, to tension and then release.

I understand that it goes well to imp. in Dorian on a Dm7 chord in a C piece. But the feel of Dorian is mainly in the B, which is an Avoid Note. So it kind of contradicts...

I would try not to get too academic regarding "avoid notes ". The problem here is that it creates a sense of "right" and "wrong" etc.. if it sounds good, then play it

till now basically I played things with the diminished scale (HT) over the V7
(so principiant was I in all that... in my solipsistic solos :) ).
Now, I think I'll go to see what is the relationship there... in this licks of yours... in the V7 parts (available tensions)... with the diabolic-great-homogeneus-diminished-scales over the V7's :) ...
...that "half tone - whole tone" stuff

Thanks this is very helpful but I find all the explaining and talking theory to melt my brain. I'd rather come to these assumptions myself through practice and not talking about it. I don't have a methodical mathmatical brain. Talking theory for me destroys me from wanting to learn. It can make it daunting and off putting.The theory makes it seem as complicated as the music sounds when in fact though, through practice it's not.I prefare as u do say to practice,memorise and most importantly produce your own licks. But I will go through this lesson slowly but I will never understand the theory. Thanks...
