  • How to make a steam boiler, includes flanging, marking out, machining, assembling, silver soldering. Step by step procedures i went through from start to finish.Designing the Flange Plate Former
The boiler is for a 'metre maid' version of a sweet pea locomotive. Its my first boiler and i am building from scratch as a complete beginner.
Designer of this locomotive was Jack Buckler back in the mid 1970's. all details are in his book which is still available to buy.

Good morning Mr. F - just to let you know I'll be going through all of these again soon. The 2.5" Atlantic boiler is no big thing I understand, but I think I'm going to need all the help I can get for a 5". I must admit, I am starting to consider a traction engine too - at least I can drive it around the garden!

      morning WW
All the best with the boiler, just take your time, use the measure twice, cut once!!!!! system, or in my case measure half a dozen times, cut once!!!!🤣🤣
As for the traction engine, depending what scale, the road wheels / flywheel may not fit in the Myford. so check that before starting if it helps!!!
      Regards

@@MrFactotum I think I could mount them on a stub arbor in the the horizontal spindle socket on my mill? Anyway, definitely a problem for another day. I'm going to practise silver soldering soon - is regular plumbing copper pipe fine to test with assuming it's clean?

@@williamsworkshopukYes, that's possible on the mill i suppose, but as i say many times in my "Make a Beginners Miniature Steam Loco" video's, don't overload your grey cells, take things a bit at a time, when you open the book that i worked from, its easy to get in to negative/panic mode with all those 100's and 100's of things to make playing on your mind, i've been in engineering all my life, i don't try to look at the bigger picture all the time, take things in bite sizes and don't think about the rest till you have finished the task your concentrating on now. Anyway i'm getting off my soapbox for now.🤣 You know where i'm coming from. I will be watching your progress.
      All the Best

Went off on a tangent there and forgot about the silver soldering, yes anything that's made of copper /brass, the plumbing copper pipe is fine, remember, polish, clean, degrease, flux, heat, use some fire bricks to maintain the heat in the components.

Looks like your taking a very good approach to it, - As you said not the easiest of boilers to make and flange. Are you from Yorkshire? Derbyshire? Keep up the good work !

      Hi steve
Thanks for interest, ive been taking a look at your interesting minatures, i especially like the coal fired boiler, did you make it.
Ive just finished my boiler, if your interested i'm just going through all the video footage ive took on the progress of making it, so will be adding the parts over th next couple of week, i think there will be about 12 parts. My boiler is now ready for boiler inspection and pressure testing. Anyway, this has no reflection on you but i don't put my whereabouts on public sites, theres just too many scammers and idiots out there.
      Regards
      Mr f

No problem mate - I understand, I didn't make the boiler, but have made a simple small pot type boiler, and repaired a couple of stationary boilers. Traction engines are more my thing, rebuilt a few miniatures, including a half size one. Glad to hear your boiler is ready for testing - well done!@@MrFactotum

What is the working pressure from that boiler ? Good video !

      @MrFactotum  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi massimo
Nice to hear from you, the working pressure is 80 psi, i have just pressure tested it this morning by coincidence to double its working pressure 160 psi .
I am just going through all my video footage of me making the boiler from start to finish, including the pressure testing. I will be uploading another 10 parts over the next week or so, the last one part 13 will be the pressure testing video.
I will soon be making a start on the rest of the loco.now the boiler is finished
      Best wishes
      Regards
      Mr f.
