  • Hey everyone!
    In tonight’s archival video I discuss Mobile Fidelity & the MoFi Lie!
    MoFi has been quite a hot topic in the last couple of weeks, and many of our new viewers have never seen this video!
    I still stand by my assertions in this video because despit over half a year in the spotlight, MoFi still has quite a black eye with many if not all record buyers!
    As usual if you enjoy tonight;s video, please consider giving it a Thumbs-Up as that helps the TH-cam algorithm better identify the channel to a larger audience!

    The MoFi remaster are really good. Everyone I have had has sounded great. And honestly their remastering is a lot better them others out there doing it. I hate a lot of remasters cause they change things around too much. But MoFi stays true the to original with very minor tweaks. But to get to the process of making an album. The "Mother" that is created gets used up to 5000 time before a new mother disc is needed. The Mother makes the negative that can make 5000 positives before they have to go back to the Mother disc and make a new Negative. So that is 5000 "Stampers" that can be made from one "Mother" discs. Each stamper can make 10,000 albums before it starts to degrade in sound. Since MoFi makes a run of only 40,000 records. It can happen from one Mother disc (One Mother per side of the record that is). So going from the original Master, be it analog or digital. They only need one shot at it. Their claim "From The Original Master Recording" hold true. They did use the original master to create their mastering copy. They just didn't use analog to create their copy of the master. So the order of analog to digital to analog is what you are now getting with MoFi products. To me it doesn't matter as long as a great sounding product is made. What does matter is the price of that final product.

      Yep. As long as the parameters are optimised analog vs digital does not really matter. Something/somebody with ears and the right will be making choices. There is no such thing as a straight line in nature and neither in audio land. And the end of the line is the consumer audio equipment which has a vast variety of quality. Even audiophiles will disagree on just about everything involved in the process. And digital copies can be perceived as better and more consistent...or not.

    • @MrBallynally2
      @MrBallynally2 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yes. That sounds dishonest. But, i think it is actually better to make a good quality digital copy of a master tape (not to be confused with the actual multitrack tape). Tape to tape is always lossy and the tape deck itself ( plus the magnetic tape) will introduce additional artefacts on top of the original. Does it all matter? The answer is...no.

    I am an old fart and can clearly remember when CDs came along giving us the clean and nearly perfect digital recordings. I don’t miss the clicks and pops and lesser sonic range of vinyl nor the hiss and lesser range of tape. When I light up and lie back and listen to my favorite songs, I don’t reach for analog. I know this is a tired discussion/argument but even if analog somehow is made perfectly equivalent to digital, you can’t drag record players and vinyl along with you as easily as my iPhone loaded with 1500 of my favorite songs.

      Totally agree - sold off nearly 500 Lp's to a local record shop a year or two back, made a few quid too which was useful. Stepping back from the nostalgia element of vinyl (a dubious reason for sticking to it in my opinion) I honestly get a thrill listening to an Astell Kern Hi-res player I got off Ebay, pay Tidal £20 a month for top-notch sound from virtually every album ever released. Life's too short to worry about the angle of the tone-arm or the weight of the turntable platter!

    • @boneseyyl1060
      @boneseyyl1060 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As a fellow old fart, I kind of agree with you. My albums have been gathering dust along with my turntable for a good 25 years or so. I only this month purchased a new 2 channel amp that I really like and decided that it might be time to go back and see what those albums used to sound like. Had to purchase a new cartridge first, but at least the turntable seemed to have survived the inactivity.
      Anyway, they sounded good. Are they better sounding than good digital? Honestly, I really can't tell. They are better than mp3 digital, at least. But it is an entirely different experience. Yea, you might hear a few of those annoying pops or crackles. And you certainly can't skip over songs that aren't your favorites. And after 4 or 5 songs you are up to clean, flip, and recue again.
      Is it worth all that for some ethereal improvement in sound that may or may not be present? From a practical standpoint, probably not. But from a nostalgic standpoint, for me yea. Simply because it takes me back to a better time.
      But without that, I can't think of any good reason, short of having spent massive amounts of money on the best equipment to truly appreciate the sound, that I would choose playing an album over it's digital counterpart. I liken vinyl to Harley motorcycles today. Once the old guard has passed away, and taken the nostalgia and loyalty to the format with them, I believe vinyl interest will begin dwindling again until it becomes a quaint footnote in audio history. I imagine you will be finding some pretty expensive turntables at the fleamarkets in another 20 to 30 years.

    The new Rolling Stones Mono set released this week is sourced from analog but uses a DSD. I think DSD is a valid way to transfer providing the sound engineer understands how to master the tapes digitally, so they won't sound shrill and compressed. It is probably the future for reissues as record companies are not going to risk damage to their master tapes.

    This parallels what happens with guitar amps. The amp simulators are getting very close to the tube sound, but when the volumes go skyward, the tube amp wins hands down. There is nothing like the sound of pushing a tube amp to it's limits. I have a marshall all transistor amp, and the difference between my marshall dsl40c and my marshall mg100 is astounding. Digital sampling in my guitar world sounds every bit the enigma as it does in the digital/analog world of vinyls.

    • @smelltheglove2038

      Digital modelers are awful. Digital will never be able to capture the dynamics or the harmonics that tubes offer. I get in an argument a day with Kemper fan boys. My response is always, “Why would I want something that’s copying in a lesser way something when I could easily play the real thing?” It’s not like they’re much cheaper. Digital is inherently lossy. It sucks.

      For those of us that gig in bands, digital can sound good if mic'ed up. But just playing at stage volume, no mic'ed amps, digital doesn't push any air and just disappears in the mix if others are using tubes. And, if you "crank up" digital, no matter how good, you still hear what i call "the digital chirp." Ya gotta push air to feel the power of rock and roll. Tubes are the king of live rock.

    Hi Michael, I am very happy to see your channel's success, the videos are great. I wanted to throw you some thoughts for your consideration as it might be something you might like to discuss in future videos. And that is the whole Hi-Res audio (audio with a bit depth and sampling frequency above 16-bit/44.1kHz, which is standard CD quality) releases of the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and many other great bands. Two commonly talked about hi-res formats are 24-bit/192kHz or 24-bit/96kHz audio. In the past, the higher level audio formats were SACD and DVD-Audio. To hear the greater sound quality, one must have the equipment that can process these formats, like a hi -res DAC (digital to analogue converter), among other things. There is some controversy as to how much improvement in sound quality there exists within these formats also. What is your take on all this?

    Many of the videos so far I’ve heard about the topic don’t seem to take into account if a unknown quality digital copy is supplied or if they made a super high quality copy themselves of the actual analog master, in my opinion at least the latter should be able to be considered just as if you used the original analog master to create the end media, and it’s not as if a digital copy is going to erase or diminish the analog nature / feeling from the original tape you’re recording it from anyways (unless the sound from making multiple copies is what you desire I guess).
    Plus you can eliminate any variations from the mastering to production due to having to create multiple copies and the wear since the tapes to production could be bypassed if one wants too, creating a more consistent high quality for each copy.
    Though for those who want something that is highly unique and possibly can’t be recreated in more copies for others to enjoy - the physical media wouldn’t allow it, this would be a horrifying idea / revelation since it would make their copies less unique, and I guess this would be the primary worry for at least some collectors.

    Your comparison to situations where you allow someone (like your wife) to come to an erroneous conclusion is a good one. There are errors of commission AND errors of omission. MOFI didn't so much 'lie' as disingenuously allow the buyer to assume something that wasn't actually true - that what they were buying was actually AAA when it wasn't. While technically that's more a violation of trust than an outright lie, just try splitting that kind of hair with your wife sometime!

    When you get into the digital “word’s” bit length and the astronomical sampling rates the pros are using these days, there’s basically no difference between digital and analog sound quality these days… UNTIL you get to whatever is playing it at home. If it’s a CD, it’s STILL got a 44.1 KHz sampling rate and a 16-bit word. At least those little chips available these days have a longer word, and some of those have a higher sampling rate. But “What’s the sampling rate for Analog?”, I have actually been asked!?! Once and for all, here’s the answer: THERE ISN’T ONE! A song on an analog record is ONE CONTINUOUS WAVEFORM FOR THE FULL DURATION OF THE SONG!

      there is NO right answer if you don't state the parameters. Quality isnt a word that floats in the air without boundaries. In the end it only matters to the listener. If you spend all yr time analysing your listening capacity will diminish. And the listening experience is by definition not neutral. So, anyone claiming analog is better/ higher quality than digital (and im talking final product) has convinced him or herself that it is and vice versa. It is all futile..

    For me it’s about information retrieval. The cartridge (transducer) converts mechanical energy to electrical energy and is pure analogue. How the information was transported to the vinyl is not important. Personally, I like analog the best. But I have no problem with great sounding digital steps that are taken if it is sold in advertised that way. If they have the best sounding Abraxas with a digital step in it, I still want that LP. But after being deceived and lied to for so long, they definitely lost their trust and I don't blame anyone, especially the 100% analog purest folks, for being upset. One of the YT audiophiles (Cheapaudioman) cracked me up when he said, "I'm into vinyl for the expense and inconvenience". LOL! In the case of MoFi yes, I think it's an issue (but not a sonic one). Some of those records were $150 bucks and because of the limited editions they would sell for $250 and up later on for a used copy. Even though they sound epic (they really do) people were paying for an all analog copy. Yes I also find it funny, but not surprising that the same records were previously given rave reviews by analog connoisseurs. I go to an audiophile show here in Chicago area and have been fooled more than once that I thought I was listening to a record (which was spinning) and turned out to be a digital source. It's funny I was buying MoFi records in the 80's and early 90's for the simple reason that they used vigin vinyl and there virtually no pops or clicks- unlike US pressings.

The obsessive Audiophile crusade makes me laugh, they pay a fortune for a length of speaker cable and rabbit on about the weight of their turntable, do they ever just relax and just listen to the music?

    Really only care about this with certain records where I notice something missing and I have to wonder if that is just a result of a bad transfer but no there are a few albums that I think truly sound better on vinyl and seem to lose something when played on my iPhone is it enough for me to, hunt down an original recording? Usually not, if a run across one at yard sale I may buy vinyl. But I've always been a little weary of new vinyl because I've never been certain that today's artist recorded mastered analog. Since it seemed like everyone seemed to use protools I'm like generally assuming that most modern music is no longer analog.

    For some time now most credible reviewers have admitted that almost all new vinyl LP's are pressed form digital masters - no matter what audiophile level of excellence is claimed. The only reason you could believe otherwise is if you want to. People are hating on MoFi now because there is too much evidence to continue to believe. Just the fact that mastering from an original tape constantly degrades its quality makes the situation one where every one of us should be grateful for the DXD/DSD technology that preserves these original recordings safely. This DSD vs analog debate should be put to bed. Vinyl albums, CD's, and Digital files of these older recordings wouldn't even be possible in any quantity without digital steps. I'm sure more unicorns will present themselves for those who want to chase them.

  • @83Roboto
    @83Roboto ปีที่แล้ว

    This is definitely a controversial subject. I think a recording can only be as good as the original source. As to MoFi, I think the fault lies with their marketing department. It's anyone's guess if the MoFi engineers spoke up to the marketing department as to how the process was being presented to the buyers. MoFi did have some limitations due to labels no longer willing to loan out master tapes as they did in the past. The bigger subject is the countless multiple remasters of quite a few artist's\band's albums that have been put out over the years. From both the original record labels as well as the specialty labels. At some point it seems ridiculous as well as overkill. Definitely in some cases it's all just marketing. Let us also not forget that some of these remasters have butchered the artist's\band's original vision and intent.

      How good a digital recording sounds is dependent on the sampling rate. The higher the sampling rate, the better the sound. As a result, the higher the sampling rate, the more memory hungry the recording is. They age ferrochrome tapes aged also , philips black chrome started even flaking off some surfce only after some years , Best to this day are some Ferro green tapes by BAFS . I know Mfsl did cassettes also -and I bought some -after only a couple of years the sound were differnt lost pitch and they were dolby B encoded maybe the aging changed the dolby B .
