Defeating Marty with no party members lost AND all in one assault is incredible props to you for doing something i thought would take months for someone to perfect
Marty is Lisa's greatest demon. He's an immense demon of Brad's as well, but this Marty is derivative of Lisa's. As terrible as that trauma is, it serves as a cookie jar to block Brad from his true greatest regret.
God, the Marty Mound is so *upsetting* in a way I can't really describe. It's like Abstract Daddy from Silent Hill 2 only much more in your face. With Abstract Daddy it was the twisted implication, with the Marty Mound it's such a culmination. He is hulking. He is everything. He is looming over Brad, casting a shadow over his life, for now and forever. He is a thick wad of flesh, overtaken, spilling from his easy chair and up and up into a mountain against the valley of Brad, ever-consuming and always hungry. He chewed up Lisa's life for no real reason other then *he fucking wanted to*. Because he thought that's what being a "man" was. Just taking and taking and taking from people that he was so much stronger than, exerting dominance for no real reason other then pleasure. Just like Abstract Daddy, he only cared about pleasure. His face leers down at you, atop the pulsing mass of veins and fat and choked arteries and sweaty rolls of flesh. As the roots grow. He is the festering abscess at the heart of this game, the poison that seeped into Brad's veins and damaged him for life. The monster that killed Lisa over and over and OVER again, until she decided that the final death was the only escape. That destroyed Buzzo's life and drove him into Yado's arms. That caused the White Flash in the first place. The source of all this joyless pain and numb misery. *Now its time to rip it out*.
I like to think that, if he hadn't been repeatedly fucked over by Buzzo (who is, in many ways, the true reason Brad never actually recovered), Brad would have been able to overcome his trauma right here. Which I guess is ironic because this whole sequence was 100% a Joy-induced hallucination. I think the only reason the whole nightmare sequence ends the way it does is because of the joy overdose Buzzo forces on Brad earlier in the game - The thing that pushes him into full Joy Mutant mode. I think that if Brad experienced something similar to this earlier in the story, he would have been able to reject the notion that his nightmare seems to inflict upon him - That he cannot save anyone, least of all himself. I also frankly think that - Well, we can very easily justify that Joy is a supernatural substance that induces supernatural hallucinations - the speech Marty gives during his demise is as close to the true Marty Armstrong we will ever see on screen. At his core, Marty is the logical extreme of petty darwinism and narcissistic nihilism - He's a fucking animal, is what I'm saying. And yet also at his core, for all his brutality, for all his talk of eating like a dog... He's scared. Not just scared, he's a coward. Afraid of the consequences of all his actions, all his vile actions which were the result of impotent, powerless overcompensation. He tells Brad about how easy it is to just keep doing it. To just keep hurting people, and beating the shit out of his kids, and being a fat cunt watching TV. And if you stop, you'll get hurt so badly, because there's no way we could stop hurting the people important to us and actually try to start caring about them. Which all brings me to another parallel... Buddy. Remember the Joyful where she talks to Brad at the end? I believe that was the real Brad, maybe not the actual person but the hallucination portraying who he was at his core accurately. The reason I mention this is because I think that this fight is not just a direct parallel to the final fight of Painful, but to that sequence, only Brad has a far, FAR worse time of it. And yet he can overcome it, even at great cost... And yet it still may not be enough to truly progress from that wound so deeply inflicted on his soul. But he CAN do it, and he CAN fight. Just like he can refrain from Joy, not because it will change his course, but because he WANTS to change his course. Or, as Marty puts it, he can eat like a dog, run away from this fight, and take his Joy every few hours. After all... It only takes one taste. And it's so easy. I do agree with you immensely, by the way. The imagery of this entire fight, from the Blood Ocean to the spiders (those faces...) to Marty himself, especially the way his head moves in his later phases, is bleakly striking. It perfectly captures the brutal, violent agony of what it's trying to portray. Every moment of this fight feels like it was made to evoke this sense that you are inside a furnace and the world limply shrugs as you burn. Just pure, unadulterated malice. It is brilliant in its lack of subtlety, and I hate to think what kind of memories dredged up this utterly hellish nightmare. Although a lot of it is probably the Joy, let's be real.
Curious funny fact. Joy was intended for military intent, right? That means subjects took joy willingly specifically for this. This took doses and doses, as mutations as bad as all the joy mutants require heavy genes modification. Last and definitive joy pill version requires 2/3 for eventual mutation. Buddy probably took just 5 or less, meaning that she didnt abuse it. Still, she started her mutation in about a week. Brad took joy pills right after the flash and all those years. Not even a sign of mutation. Buddy appears and brad quits, so there's time for him to recover some of his genes wounds, atleast a bit. Some time later he just cant handle the withdrawal and grabs the OLD joy pills. After this, the game's events start happening which span about 2 weeks or even months, considering that some of his hallucinations knock outs may just last a lot of hours. Now, i know some joy driven rages (such as rick's scene) happen early in game, but have in mind this happens early on after taking joy, which in each worked version causes hallucinations. It is possible the joy he took at the start of the game may have caused this. Add this to the amount of times he feels strong emotions (general plot events in game) while never turning. Every single Olathian is unaware of mutants when the game begins, and just a couple get turned early on, even then, some days have passed since the intro cutscene. So. We can have some info. • Turning after consuming newest joy pill and letting time pass and the mutation advance on your body. Brad is out, multiple days transcur and brad just doesnt turn after initial joy dose which may be considered the new joy model. • Emotion-filled moment occurs which drives the user into mutation. X for brad, no early plot relevant scene turns him. • Near death experience turns the user into a mutant. X for brad. Before the ending, brad doesnt nearly die at any point plotwise. This proves that brad only used early joy pill models during the intro, and that the joy pills we see scattered around right where the game starts are the same he threw off the cliff and then grabbed later. Proving that INDEED. PUSSY BUZZO CAUSED BRAD TO MUTATE. YOU ARE WELCOME FOR THIS "CURIOUS FUNNY FACT".
I like how this personifies Marty, he's a scumbag who's afraid of his actions catching up with him so he gaslights Brad into locking Lisa up. Only for Brad to let her out and for her to kill herself as a result of finally getting freedom. Add in Buzzo's side of things and it's the full picture of what happened in-between Lisa the Paintful and Lisa the First. It also shows that the Marty we meet when we go to rescue Buddy really is a different person, or at least he's trying to be.
