Hello all! Just want to note when talking about my chronic pain I was not asking for advice, I know any advice is not ill intentioned but as someone with a chronic condition I find it frustrating. If fixing my pain was as easy as having a cutting table I would have done it years ago. Using a standard cutting table actually makes my back pain worse and I can't afford nor do I have space (I live in a small 1 bedroom!) for one with the customizations I would need. Just a gentle reminder that people with chronic pain have already explored most of their options with their doctors for pain relief and prevention, so please refrain from ever giving anyone with chronic pain advice unless they explicitly ask for it!
As a fellow disabled sewist I really appreciate your transparency about your pain, but also totally get not wanting to talk about it because dealing with people's ableism is exhausting! Also this coat turned out gorgeous and I'm so impressed!!
i really love that you do the cost wrap ups at the end of each project video. i wish more people did that so people would understand that peoples' time is not free! i adore this coat, i love the floofy sleeves and the length of it plus the coloring is just gorgeoous!
I also have back problems and no immune system so often have to have brakes from sewing due to health so I understand your frustration at ppl not understanding how much effort it takes to make clothing, some days even just trying to cut fabric hurts. So please don't listen to them or let their words upset you, not only do you make these things in poor health and pain but you create content that inspires others that also in the same boat. So from those of us that know what you go through and appreciate what you do thank you 😊 please keep doing what your doing .
I don't know where I heard this but I heard sewing is 95% prep work & 5% sewing. I used to hate all the ironing & little steps but the more I learned the more I like it.
@@HaleyMarieVintage I hate cutting out too! so much! I hate it so much that changed the way I sew🤣 I don't use seam allowances anymore. I mark my sewing lines & trim the rest all willy nilly until it's actually sewn.🤣
Thank you for sharing about your pain, chronic pain is so incredibly difficult and a challenge. Keep fighting the good fight and we understand some days are better than others!
Beautiful work. Totally understand the frustration of chronic pain/invisible disabilities. If I had to cut out on the floor, I wouldn't get much further.
Dang cute coat! I have heard the word 'thinsulate' in some vids about coatmaking for making it warm without bulk and weigth. Tip stolen from Shannon Makes, adding magnets to keep the bottom of the coat closed without changing the look of the coat.
This coat is STUNNING!!! You’ve instantly convinced me that I need to go buy all the Gertie patterns, I have a couple of her books already and loved them but the detail and the coat making tricks in this to avoid pad stitching are genius!!! It is beautifully made and you did an unreal job! I’m also really glad you’ve started using a living wage for your calculations rather than the average wage for a seamstress, that is so so important!!!! The amount of skill and years of practice that goes into becoming a seamstress worth her salt means they deserve a living wage! And I hope this encourages seamstresses to charge what they deserve to be paid!
I feel your comments about your back. I suffer from severe back pain too. The other day I put together a work bench and I felt that for maybe four days after. I go to the chiropractor regularly and it helps, but still it doesn't fix the issue permanently. So, from me talk away, as I know you're not lazy. Continue with the amazing work you do ❤
One of my cats is also named Spooky and he even looks a lot like yours 😄 the white spot on his chest is smaller, and well, he's male. And has four legs. He actually got his name because when I first brought him home, he vanished under the couch... and stayed there for 2 months. Of course he came out to eat and drink and use the litter box, but never when I was in the room, mostly at night. And this was in 2021 during the pandemic when I worked from home permanently, so I spent all day in that room. He was around 4 and had been a stray, so he didn't have a name yet. It was a bit like living with a ghost (weird noises from the other room, cat food disappearing and... other things appearing in the litter box, scrabbling sounds from under the couch... hence the name. (Now he's a completely normal, loving and cuddly cat, but it took a while to get there.)
Gorgeous coat! What a marathon though! I hope you are proud of yourself for persevering with all that prep and the unliked parts to produce such a beautiful and practical garment. I appreciate your ‘rant’. As a sufferer of unseen pain and fatigue, I acknowledge how disheartening and judgemental those comments must be. A friend who has chronic illness said to me once, somebody who wakes up each morning and hasn’t ever experienced ongoing pain or fatigue has no idea what you live with. So true. Know that there are others who are in awe of what you achieve each week and applaud your tenacity, knowing your limits and taking care of yourself.
I love poofy sleeves! I just finished these teired poofy sleeves and they were the biggest pain. I do love them though. I made a white button up shirt and now want to make a black one.
I use Tasha lining. It is that shiny fabric but has a fleece backing. It helps to keep you warm and block the wind but for a Canadian winter I add an additional layer of fleece fabric. With that I can handle -30celcius. Enjoyed the video. Was not sure about making the coat but you do have me revisiting it. Thanks ❤
I have this pattern and haven’t used it yet … (been waiting to thrift some wool) so it’s great to have the knowledge that it’s a lot of work 😅 Looks incredible on you! And also shame on anyone who says your lazy! I love your videos ❤
It will be interesting to see labor time the next time you make. I can also see it as a car coat length, with or without hood. And as a dress (sized down of course) I think there was a similar coat dress in a vogue pattern. Interlining: you can get thinsulate. There is also a flannel backed satin. I once used old flannel nightgowns as interlining. Gorgeous coat.
The coat is gorgeous! I’ve got a vintage coat pattern that’s a bit similar that I’ve been putting off making for a while but seeing all these beautiful coat videos lately is really making me want to make one 😂
Yea it definitely looked like it was 😮! I’ll have to attempt it over summer. You also inspired me to keep track of my cost per garment as well lol. I now also have a spreadsheet 😆
This was a very pretty coat! I think it’s awesome that you push through your pain to produce such lovely garments. I don’t know how I missed that Spooky is a tripod! Spooky is a great assistant.
I've been sewing with her patreon patterns since early 2020. the patterns are really good and uses vintage sewing styles techniques. she even has videos for a lot of them. I have this pattern but, I've never made it because I know it will take a month and I live in California, where I don't need a coat. 😭
Yes this project I think was the second longest I have tackled, the first being a corseted ballgown so this was a lot of work. I actually feel like if you made it out of like a cotton canvas it could be good for California "winters" but still keep a similar structural integrity that a wool does.
Hi Haley Marie. I love everything about the coat. it reminds me of a black velvet one I got the only difference is mine has a belt and a flap at the back and more buttons other than that it is the same.
I totally know how you feel. I’ve been in pain since I was 17 and am now 42 and have had 3 surgeries in the last 4 years because of it and. Long story to what’s wrong with me but my point is I know exactly how you feel
I sympathize with you about back pain. I sew all the time and have had to find ways to work around the pain. On a nicer note, I am glad I got to see your cat more this time. I love cats, especially black ones. Does he have only 3 legs? It is so good you are finished that project. You should be proud of yourself. I am sure your cat is proud of you!

That coat is amazing. The sleeves in the Discover @self always just lovely and you have to know that that would’ve been a very very high in coca taco trying to purchase something like that you know where you’d have to look for it and so we’re talking thousands of dollars.
I assume coca taco is couture lol autocorrect is so funny sometimes! Totally agree well worth all the work this would be a very expensive coat. I could probably buy a vintage LiliAnne for pretty close to the cost with labor but I am not paying for my labor so this is definitely a good deal.

It looks like you don’t have a cutting table. Are you cutting out on the floor? thank you for giving such an accurate cost with labor!! people don't understand.
Obsessed with this coat! I’ve always wanted a “fancy” coat and have been eyeing this pattern forever…might have to take the plunge for this winter.
Do it! It isn't too hard of a project just very time consuming!
I appreciate your rant
Beautiful work.
Totally understand the frustration of chronic pain/invisible disabilities. If I had to cut out on the floor, I wouldn't get much further.
It is funny cutting on a table is somehow worse for my pain, bodies are weird
Every effort put into anything is 100% for each person. It might look like less to others, but it's still 100% for you.
Well stated.
So true.
I LOVE this. The next time we have a dinner date you are wearing this IDC if it’s summertime ❤😂

Yeah I was shocked to not be doing pad stitching in this project, brilliant instructions even though I was initially very intimidated. And thank you 🥰
