      Hi Professor, do you have any thoughts on Barbri's Law Preview course? I am considering taking their 6-day in-person course. I have heard mixed reviews about it. I have done a lot of reading and practicing on my own; do you think my "self-study" is sufficient or should I go with their program? It's quite expensive...
      All the best.

      I strongly recommend a law preview course, though I haven’t investigated their course in depth. I just went to their website and looked at it. There’s a lot there, but what is missing-at least I don’t see it-is a robust segment on exam taking skills. Just make sure that you begin developing exam taking skills soon. If you take the course, look for practice exams once you complete one of their courses. I do think that their course introductions are a great idea.

I wrote this because I do not know how to go about my situation and wanted your advice on what to do

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the United States, law school is a graduate program. Not too many international students get into US law schools. But you might have a better chance of getting into a US law school if you earn a college degree in the US. And to get into one of the T3, as you want, you will need almost a perfect GPA in college and close to a 180 LSAT score. Keep in mind, less that 1% of all law school graduates attend one of these three law schools--they are very competitive.

  • @marcelocastro5265

    Hi! I’m a law student (not from the USA) but I’m looking forward to learn American Law. I was hoping you could recommend me some books that explain how the American Law works; or even books that law students read and learn throughout college.

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Law students in the US learn through case books and treatises. A case book provides edited appellate decisions, which explain a minor point of law. Then through the semester students put the pieces together to understand a broad topic. Then we also have treatises, which some faculty, like me, assign to students. When teaching Torts I assign "Understanding Torts" by Diamond. The "Understanding" series provides a good explanation of the law on a particular topic.

    My school offers a supplemental major along with my actual major. Would this be considered competitive when it comes to admissions? My actual major: Criminal Justice. Supplemental major: Law and Society. Any input is appreciated. Thank you!

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the US the two primary factors in admissions are GPA and LSAT. If you can earn a supplemental degree and still maintain a high GPA then go for it.

    For "start early", can you suggest any books?

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I suggest a two prong approach: the law and exam skills. For the law, pick one topic and purchase a concise hornbook. Torts tends to be an easier topic, so I recommend the "Understanding Torts" concise hornbook by Diamond. In preparing for law school exams, I recommend "Writing Essay Exams to Succeed" by Dernbach.

      I’m not convinced this dual degree is worth getting. I’ve been told that lawyers view these candidates with suspicion, wondering if they really want to go into business. And the same is true for business people, wondering if the candidate really wants to be a lawyer. One person I know took the second degree off his resume.

    I am still confused about what should I do for note-taking. Do I take notes before the lecture or after the lecture? Also, do I have to write all the cases separately on a book or do I incorporate it into my regular notes? I have a habit of taking mini notes on a book while in class and then I put everything together at the end of class or the week, but I am far behind note-taking for around 3 classes. Would love to get some advice from you.

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      After class, what you need to do is place the law from that class into a rule outline. No need to revise the facts from a case if you got that wrong. Also, jot down any exam tips provided by the prof. You don’t need too many notes before class, other than your case briefs.

    What is a scope for international student who already have a bachelor degree in law(from home country) and wants to practice in America ?

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's complicated, depending on where in the US you want to practice. This is because each of our 50 States regulates the practice of law--there is no one approach for foreign lawyers. For example, in some States your foreign degree makes no difference and you would have to earn the JD degree. In fact, one student I taught last semester is a lawyer back in Europe, and she is pursuing her JD in the US. Some States require you to earn a one year LLM and then take the bar exam. And a few, will allow you to practice law. However, keep in mind that anything short of earning an American JD might mean few to no job opportunities, other than starting your own firm.

Next, be prepared to pay for the education. Tuition will be around $30,000 and another $20,000 in housing. The law schools will want the tuition paid before you start classes.

    I assume that laptops are an acceptable ADA accommodation in virtually every law school. As much fun as I have advocating for myself, fighting for accommodations is about the last thing I’d want to spend time on as a 1L (then again, LSAC still illegally flags LSAT results with accommodations so it’s not like I’m not used to the deck being squarely stacked against me from the beginning).

    Do you think that going to a law school at 40 is a bad idea?

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on what you want to do and where you go to law school. The return on investment is much lower as you get older. But last year there was a 52 year old in my class. He always wanted to become a lawyer, so he is doing it economically. He was at one of the lowest cost law schools in the nation and living frugally.

    I’m trying my best to prepare the entire summer for my first year in LS this fall. I was interesting in getting a law school school prep course, the best one I’ve seen is BARBRI. Have you heard of this one before or have any other law school prep courses to recommend?

      They’re also super expensive at around $1000-$2000 for a 40 hour course. Do you have any alternative affordable choices?

      Sorry, I haven’t spent time looking into these courses for some time.

    Sir do the top law schools give scholarships and what are your earnings?

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the top law schools give scholarships, but that means going to a lower ranked law school. For example, suppose you got accepted to Yale, the world’s top law school. You could likely get a scholarship to Duke, another top college. So do you pay less or go to the world’s best law school.

    I am a freshman in high school and I’ve wanted to go to law school since 7th grade. I come from a poor family but I currently have a 4.0 GPA and am in all honors classes. My concern for law school is the cost. On top of that, I want to go to an out of state college. What can I do in my high school years to prepare me? What are the best scholarships to apply for that help future law students or students in general? How will I know what field of law I want to go into? Is there anything I need to know to help me?

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You want to get a 4.0 in college. That, and a good LSAT score, will get you a Law school scholarship. Buy an LSAT prep book in your first year of college and begin preparing then. Khan Academy has a free course.

    Can you state here sir what is the most advantage course in college to take law?

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Law school is not primarily about the content, but rather learning skills. This means taking classes that will help improve your writing. Also, take any classes which help you learn litigation, transactional, or negotiation skills.

    Why would a law school student not have any free time during the summers?

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You should have some free time before classes begin. But also prepare for class. This is because law school is radically different than college and you need time to learn the new way of thinking. Students who start early may outperform those who don’t. And to those who get the best grades go the best jobs.

      No, it does not. But few majors do, and that is okay. Focus on getting top grades so that you have options on where to attend law school.

    Is a 4.0 undergraduate GPA required to get into law school? Mine was a 3.04.

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael S No, a 4.0 GPA is not required. There are 200 law schools, which look at your GPA and LSAT. A higher LSAT will help compensate for a lower GPA.

    Can I get student loans to finance ALL expenses? Including rent, utilities, food, etc in addition to tuition and books?

    • @Learnlawbetter
      @Learnlawbetter  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally yes, but it depends. Students fill out a federal form and the financial aid department will determine how much in loans a student can take out. For the poor, yes, they can borrow money for all tuition and living expenses. This is why some law students are graduating with over $400,000 in student debt. Very hard to pay that kind of debt back.
