I actually figured out Father Paul was the Sara's dad a few episodes ago. When she starts asking her mom questions to check her mental state and asked her dad name. She hesitated before saying the other guys name. Then it made more sense when she said she saw her father outside the window, when they kept saying the angel looked so much like Pruitt, and how Sara said Pruitt would stare at her from a distance.

I really enjoyed the series! However I did not like about 25% of the ending! The part I did not like is that none of the good people that I had investment in survived! I thought that Riley, Eran along with the Shariff and some of the kids were going to save the day! Until Riley died! Eran was still a badass! The Shariff and his son both died! Yes the Vampire died and that is why Lisa lost the ability to move her legs. Overall the writing and acting was terrific! I just wanted some of the characters that I like to survive and save the day! Great reaction Steven and Nikki? I have some show suggestions for your guys: Condor, Deep State, Jack Ryan, Bosch, Hanna is badass, The Shooter, Alex Rider, Blacklist and Seal Team. I have about 70 plus shows on Netflix that are really good. However I do watch alot of crime and detective shows from foreign countries!

Leeza not being able to feel her legs at the end is a good thing, though. It means that the "miracles" are done, that the demon is dead, and that she can return to her own, human body. I love love love love that a character returning to a disabled state is framed in a positive light.

@UC5VXU1AOiLZ2J7gKmSPfAyg no, because the scene in episode 6 where Sarah (the doctor) is theorizing out loud the science behind what could be happening, she says something like “eventually your body can fight it off like any other infection” or something like that. I’m paraphrasing but she said something that implied the body could get rid of it as long as you don’t keep consuming it. She was talking to her mom and Erin specifically. Plus Mike Flanagan himself even confirmed this, why would I make that up?

Remember Sarah talking about how the priest always seemed to be watching her, even as a child? She was afraid it was because he "knew" somehow that she was gay, and therefor a sinner (a large part of why she never belonged to the church -- not only that science held more interest for her, but as an LGBTQIA+ person she would have inherently felt unwanted.). But the whole time it was because he was staring at her, his daughter.

I don't think the show was boring, but the monologues were too long and felt like things no one says in a real conversation. Just the flowery words that Flanagan elegantly put to paper. And the slow walk to mass in this episode where he felt like we really had to have the whole thing play out instead of cutting. It's just some unnecessary artsy stuff.
I came into this show not knowing anything about, so I wasn't expecting anything but good writing. But Flanagan clearly have full say in what happens in his show. And sometimes it's good to be reigned in.

Bev showing such fear of death exposes that she doesn't even believe her own dogma, otherwise she should welcome death. It goes to show that she didn't believe in religion because she cares about her afterlife in Heaven or using it to become a better person, she just liked the power that religion gave her. She liked feeling right and special. She twisted religion to suit her purposes, instead of allowing it to guide her, using bible verses out of context as a tool to rationalize anything she needed to. She liked how her position in life served her, which is why the idea of eternal life on Earth is more appealing to her than eternal life in Heaven, where she wouldn't have the same power... and once she didn't have control anymore, once it no longer served her desires... she abandoned all her supposed beliefs. Whether she started fearing that there's nothing after death, or she feared that God is in fact real and knows deep down the real God would not approve of what she's done and she's most likely going to Hell... either way, the fear she felt in death is a just punishment on its own.

His dialogue was always compelling, and when he was most honest, that was when you loved him the most. Absolutely loved this character and mostly felt sadness for him. He made an honest mistake of mistaking this monstrosity as an angel from god - which was entirely understandable for a demented old man full of unwavering faith for his beloved god, who just experienced a one-of-a-kind miracle, the likes of which he only knows from the bible. His wish to share this wonder with his community and the world is absolutely understandable... and from his perspective, it all works wonderfully at the start. And when things start to go wrong, you can absolutely see him struggling with it for a bit and having issues coming to terms with what he's done... until Bev steers him right back on his destructive path.
His one major fault was his absolute lack of critical thinking, of not questioning the things he was witnessing or doing himself enough, not second-guessing his actions and his wrong interpretation of this "angel".

At the time I thought it was catholic disapproval at the picnic (since she was there with her girlfriend). That makes it all the more heartwarming to me that he tells her how proud he is of her at the end, him as a catholic priest (and sure, her literal father), and her as a strong independent, kickass doctor, daughter, and queer woman.

The singing…my absolute favorite part of the episode. It reminds me of how the band kept playing when the titanic was sinking. They knew they weren’t going to survive, and they had come to terms with it. But at least they could die doing something that brought their soul peace, and brace themselves for the physical pain their bodies would soon experience. I love Mike’s choice to abruptly cut the singing off because in the silence that follows, his audience can hear their own thoughts and let them marinate.

When I think Midnight Mass I think Bev and Erin. Saw an interview with Mike where he said that it was half way through writing that he realised this wasn't going to be Riley's story but Erin. The first half was Riley and Monsignor Pruit, then Erin and Bev took over when those two fell off. I absolutely love Erin as a protagonist because she's soft, caring, damaged, and strong, and she never stops being any of those things even as she takes down the Angel at the end.

No matter how many times I see that confrontation scene between Annie and Bev, the moment Bev says, "I don't want to speak ill of the dead, but if Riley Flynn --" I find myself thinking, "B--, do NOT go there."
This episode belongs to Annie Flynn, in my opinion. She's the one to finally call Bev out on her lifetime of awfulness, she's got that bit earlier about how "we fight and claw and beg" for a few extra minutes despite the promise of heaven afterwards ... and when you think about it, by leading the island in song at the end, she's the one who takes over leadership and brings everyone to God.

It all comes down to what Annie said. "Never made much sense to me," Annie professed. "We all say there's a heaven, and it's waiting for us. Then we claw, fight, beg for a few more minutes at the end." Bev being the coward she is, she couldn't kill herself at the mass, and then again, was so afraid of dying the second time because she knows she's not a good person deep down, she knows deep deep down that there's no heaven waiting for her. She's a coward who uses her faith to hide behind. That while good, loving, fallible characters sang as the sun rose. No one in that crowd seemed afraid to meet the sun. The whole thing was the blood lost that confused people. Why didn't the Vampire attack Leeza after she shot it, why did people say "I think I hurt people" was because the blood lost was so powerful it overtook you. You lost yourself to it, unless you have the good heartedness to fight it, like Ed and Annie. It was amazingly done. So good. Glad you guys liked it. Great videos. Loving this channel.

The scene that impacted me the most was when the singing of "Nearer My God, to Thee," abruptly ended, and the audience realizes how doomed the whole island was from the beginning. The fact that religious zealotry led to the damnation of the people is just magnificent in it's message. Too often we are our own tool of destruction under the guise of religion.
Additionally, the revelation that the Father was Sarah's father was ingenious. There have been stories of members of the priesthood having children with nuns, or other's, and then either ignoring the child, or giving them up for adoption.
Finally, a good friend of my aunt's was a Catholic nun who met a priest when both were working in the Church. Eventually, they both decided to leave, as it isn't a cult and one can resign from the clergy, and were married for many decades. Love can be found in the oddest of places.
    Take a bow, Mike!

Loved this series. And I have never been a horror fan. The way this was done was beyond talented. The writer, whatever his personal beliefs are, really did a great job of not preaching to the viewer but rather allowed you to understand and appreciate your own faith. Just so well done to point out how some believers get consumed with their belief and close off other opinions or arguments. If anything else the way Riley’s parents held to their strength in their faith in order to continue their beliefs was masterful. And the fact the townspeople joined them showed they all realized what they’ve done and repented prior to their incineration. Other than Bev who died screaming a painful judgement for her misguided understanding and actions in life. Erin’s death with Riley was extremely well done. Love the part when she said I was here before my name, my family, etc and will be here once I’m gone and there is no time, no death. Again- the writing in this was beyond good.

@@lucykulakowska7029 It wasn't confirmed though. You see it flying away and the kid says he doubts it will make it. That's it. He doesn't know. It's a guess. But if Flannagan wanted to show the monster dead he could have....and he didn't.
And you can read here Mike Flannagan talking about the ending and The Wrap's belief that the girl not feeling her legs meant the monster was dead.
'Now, one could assume - as TheWrap did - that Lisa’s line means that The Angel did not make it away in time and was burned up by the sun as well, just off-screen, and thus whatever properties in the heavenly creature’s blood that allowed her to regain use of her legs have stopped working inside of her.
However, when TheWrap told “Midnight Mass” writer Mike Flanagan, who is also the mastermind behind Netflix’s “The Haunting of Hill House” and “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” what we assumed his ending meant, we were told our theory was wrong. But Flanagan does “love that that’s your read of it,” so don’t lose faith if that was your takeaway, too.
OK, so now to the actual meaning of the ending, courtesy of Flanagan: “We’re not saying he died… Our hope really there was just to say that Leeza’s concentration in her blood had begun to tip back, that she was going to be OK. We didn’t want it to confirm about The Angel, in that way that you can never kill fanaticism, it’ll always kind of come back. But I love that that’s what it meant to you!”
If you want to check it out the article is from The Wrap titled 'Midnight Mass ending explained by Mike Flannagan.'

    • @jeremyodwyer9232
      @jeremyodwyer9232 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I can understand wanting the monster to be dead. I was frustrated when it flew away initially after getting it's wings cut. But thinking about it more the ending where it's still out just makes the show even better because it shows that Flannagan didn't lose sight of what the monster represented in the first place. It makes it more relatable as a real world allegory. Like you can't ever really 'kill' fanaticism, you can only do your best to protect yourself and your community from it whenever it turns up.

I would call it almost horrifyingly beautiful. It definitely had a different tone than a slasher movie where you are supposed to be entertained by the deaths,. Seeing the quiet courage of so many in the face of such horror was touching. Definitely not what I was expecting this series to be. Such an original take on vampires, which is hard to do these days. Very impressed!

Just finished the series myself and the cutting off of the singing...such a great and impactful moment. So many amazing themes in this series.

Side note about episode 8 of Hill house when the jump scare of Nell showing up behind them in the car happend it was a real reaction from the actrfesess when they jumped because they had no idea Victoria was going to come in at that moment and do that yell. Mike had told her to come in whenever she wanted and didn't warn the othe two because he wanted a real reaction...bad boy.

Two reasons I love this show:
    1. They never say 'vampire' once.
    2. This is one of the only pieces of cinema that uses religion as a protagonist AND an antagonist. Rarely if ever does that occur.

Annie’s sacrifice always gets me. She’s such a mom. Tells off bev in the best way and then gives her life to buy her son minutes

That flashback scene with Riley made me feel how attached I was to the character without even realising it, which just made the scene so much more emotional.

I once said this show is about the dangers of religious indoctrination. I still think it is. But I now see it's also a commentary on the human challenge of coping with mortality. The story shows the great lengths we are willing to go to to avert our deaths - forming a pact with a vampire sire; giving up the prospect of seeing the sun to live forever in darkness; being willing to die, yes *die* (to be raised up as a vampire); and being willing to kill others - and the show also seeks to help us with fear of dying by giving us alternative, charismatic, poetic descriptions of what it means to die. The search for immortality leads to the loss of humanity; and humanity at its peak produces a love of others that transcends the fear of death. A selfless "sinner" who shows self-sacrificing love of others is more righteous than a self-seeking religious zealot trying to save their eternal soul. The vampirism aspect is a clever tool of the writer to grab the audience's attention to teach them these important lessons in a subtle, non-preachy way. Flanagan took us to church literally and figuratively.
