And here i am living in New Zealand and I haven't even thought of doing this flight. I must say I'm missing out on something spectacular thank you Paul
I did this flight nearly 30 years ago and it brought back memories of a great experience. I strongly recommend it, along with a cruise on Milford Sound.
The rugged beauty of snow covered mountains on a sunny day ending with a low pass through the spectacular Milford Sound is flying at its best. Some great footage Paul.
To quote Paul, “...and the views were really nice, as well.” I would say the views were epic. I now see why my parents were enchanted by the South Island when they traveled there a few years ago.
Paul - amazing footage. I loved the audio crossfade at the end bringing up the aircraft sound as it transitioned from magical to real world. Well Done!
I did something similar back in May but over White Island, an active volcano about 50km off the coast from Whakatane. Yet to go to Queenstown, I'm heading there in February
Loved the footage Paul but I did miss the sound of that beautiful engine in the background. Yes I know I'm strange I like the noise of aircraft engines especiall turbo props.
haha fair enough. I usually enjoy engine noises but other than the start up and wind down, this engine wasn't great to listen too haha. Not exactly an RB211 *magic*
Spectacular! I'll be watching this video several times. So jealous of you, Paul! Back in the 80s my sister lived in Christchurch and when my mother and aunt came to visit they drove to Queenstown and took a shortcut on some road that ended up being a one lane dirt road going up a mountain with a sheer drop off. I think my mother said she held her breath for an hour. NZ is so unbelievably beautiful.
Next time you are in NZ, try Soundsair from Wellington to Picton (Koromiko) on their Cessna Caravan 208B. On a good day, the view of crossing Cook Strait (between North and South Islands) and great expanse of the Marlborough Sounds is awesome. Soundsair also operates flights from Wellington to Westport on the west coast of the South Island, Nelson, Blenheim. Papaparaumu, Napier and Taupo using Cessna Caravans and Pilatus PC12s.
Outstanding again Paul ! My friends and I were in Queenstown in December of 2005 and took this exact same trip over the mountains and we had an afternoon on the boat. Spectacular scenery on the plane and from the boat with all those waterfalls. Funny thing I was just looking at the photos about an hour ago and then I was catching up on your trip reports and saw the link in your Queenstown video and didn’t think twice and clicked on it. Great memories of a fun trip with some great people !!
Great video - I has brought back great memories of my NZ trip in 1993.. I have taken a bus tour to discovery the South Island. Thank you, Paul, for sharing your video with us.
That flight was the first one I took, as a Thirteen year old, back in the mid 70's. Biggest memory is the sandflys in the aircraft on the way back. Sat in the same seat as you did.
This has to be one of the most scenic flights ever. Wow, what a great experience. The green mountains, remind me a little bit of the Hawaiian island of Kauai
@@PaulStewartAviation Me and my wife went to Kauai in July. Beautiful island. I hope you get the chance to go there someday. The runway is small so the size of the planes are limited.
Thanks Timathy. I was actually trying to remember your name a few weeks ago prior to my NZ A320N flights although from memory you just fly the ATRs? My ZQN-SYD flight should be online next week :)
@@PaulStewartAviation That's fine buddy, but I'm working on the Q300 till next year then international is next on the cards.. Cant wait for your next upload buddy.
Fantastic footage there, Paul. Was great how close you got to the mountains and greenery. You can see from what you've captured here why Milford Sound is NZ's #1 attraction, but few get to arrive like this, and in weather this clear. Thanks for sharing. 😍
Absolutely breathtaking, Paul. The high waterfalls that rival Angel Falls make me want to fly down, hop on a boat and dance around their bases. You Aussies have all the fun! It's just not fair (stomps foot and walks away). Why can't we have nice things? "... Oh, right, our president, a fossil himself who burns them for fuel, doesn't understand that 'Clean Coal' is an oxymoron."
Wow, what an amazing scenery. This must be one of the most scenic flights out there! You got so close to the mountains as well, so cool! Thanks for sharing this great video! Brendan
It was a great way to see Milford Sound. I actually did the glacier chopper ride that was really good the next day. I'm currently debating if I'll do a video on that too, as I don't wander too far away from my usual plane videos.
Hi Paul, 37 -3 subscribers you lucky man. Im from Uk, Im only just below 1k after 4 years on You Tube, I spent 2 years in NZ and saw the whole country and still think im there. Next March im flying direct to Perth from London, its that not stop flight on the 787 so its going to be a long flight. Thanks for sharing all these wonderful Aircraft, have a great week.
"The viiews were quite nice as well " .. indeed they were Paul. Your understatement would be what our American friends would state as " Feck yeah, that's super super awesome! " lol. NZ v Norway for most epic seaside scenery ....
Great footage. We were booked to do this last year in reverse but the pilot cancelled in the last minute due to weather even tho other planes were taking off. Not Happy.
A lovely video, Paul. While I’d be happy doing this flight in PT6 powered aircraft, I’d be very wary of a piston single ( less reliable) as there’s absolutely nowhere to go in the event of a forced landing. Also, check the winds before you go; in 56 years of flying I experienced the worst conditions ever on this route, simply unbelievable turbulence, with the day’s flying cancelled after we returned. Thank goodness going was my wife’s idea as otherwise I’d never have heard the end of it. It took her a long time to trust aeroplanes after this. The aircraft was a BN-2 Islander, oddly the very same one that crashed near Hobart earlier in the year...
Thanks Rod. I was really surprised by how smooth the flight was although I had heard that it can get a little choppy. I also did have similar thoughts about having a single engine and not many places for a forced landing :o
I took the old steam boat cruise there in 2018 and the scenery was even more fascinating than flying above, and those turquoise waters were amazing. Too bad there was no footage of Queenstown itself.
Yeah the views on the TSS Ernslaw can be pretty impressive. My video of the flight from Milford back to Queenstown has more views of the region around Queenstown itself.
Those views could only be described as EPIC! Thanks Paul! You mentioned that the flight wasn't rough. How 'not rough'? I'd have expected that a small aircraft flying around tall mountain peaks could make for a pretty rough ride.
Thanks Drew. Ummm from memory it's about 18-55mm kit lens. It's not idea and I'd prefer something with a wider lens like 15mm but that's quite a bit more expensive and doesn't have stabilisation. The autofocus is horrific so I usually have to revert to manual focus.
We got up early and drove from Kingston to milford. All day long, rained all the way, thick cloud and didnt see a thing. Got to the end of the road and it became torrential, turned right around and drove back. The end
Oh damn that's a pity! The first time I visited Milford it rained the entire time, although we drove from Te Anau. The drive had its own charm as there were waterfalls everywhere, but the actual sound itself was just cloud. :(

I've flown Queenstown to Milford sound so many times in msfs, so it was a pleasure to watch it in the real world, thanks for sharing.
