The way that i find out wich side is the best facing is i take a dremel to one corner of the opal and test the layers from both sides I don't mean to be preaching all the time I'm just trying to help u out with all the tricks that iv learnt along the way hope this helps mate great cutting ur getting a lot better and lucas bell is greatc iv brought from before he's got every thing opal's, fossils and a lot more
Awesome video mate your little girl is a real character and she'll be an opal fan before you know it.Looks like you have some nice material coming your way.
I just bought a 18 carat lightning ridge opal from a jewelry maker who passed away. He purchased it in the 90's. I got it for 38 dollars!!! Beautiful glimmerimg with color rough. Ive bought several peices but got a steal of a deal on this one
When you're in the opal cave does the town have a huge light to shine in the sky to call "Opal Man"? Your baby is absolutely adorable. What a lucky man. Thanks for sharing your talent and family with us. Beautiful big opal. I hope I haven't missed the opals you got in Mexico...
✨⭐🌟Opal Odyssey🌟⭐✨ Why can't you have low and high spots on a stone if the stone looks great without having to make the dome uniform? The biggest stone looked amazing before it was chopped into two pieces. I really like freeform stones when dealing with opal. I am guessing that perhaps you are trying to make your stones conform to conventional finishes. The end results did become what you wanted and that is really what counts.
Good question. the only answer I have is just personal Preference. I don't Like free form, I prefer as close to perfection as I can get and I prefer a calibrated stone I can order a setting for. In this case It cost me a much nicer stone. But I only say that in Hindsight. If I could cut the stone over I would have cut off the low spot and got a nice high dome flashy Opal.
Cracks like those are mainly from miner dono how pick opal out they dont undercut enough end up cracking it as they dig it out seen it meany times you can turn stones in to chips
Btful stone to work on and some nice stones as result…. Yes you prob could have chosen to cut the larger piece stone earlier to save the colour bar, but definitely hard not to gamble with the potential payoff… A really good lesson for us viewers -to be ruthless earlier rather than loose the amazingness of the colour bar.
Hello from CHCH fellow Kiwi, love this guy's content and information about getting decent rough. Are you cutting? Where do you get your rough?are you in Nelson area judging by your name?! cheers Kirk
@@Aoreregoldnz that's what I thought.I have been playing around for about 6mnths but I have misjudged my purchases of rough and ended up quite bummed out by the outcome.Hopefully we will pick up the names of some good sellers through our friend here! He's sure blazing a trail of purchasing rough! Cheers. What do you prefer to cut if you have a choice?
@@kirklovell9164 cheers I'll cut any Australian Opals except Boulder I've done a few but it is quite boring recently cut some Olympic field which was challenging in a good way 😊
I can tell just by lookn at opal if its gona face from top and bottom or if it faces from side its simple if you pay attention to colour if colour in a horizontal stone runs side way horizontal example if stone show green most like will face moore to purple if colour virtical on horizontal stone will face from top and bottom the colours you see from side. If you understand if you dont understand read it again till it sinks in
Your daughter is precious!
The opals came out really nice. I like the larger oval the best out of the bunch.

That stone is a virtical that was on slight angle is why the bars are on angle found lots them.
