      Mister Josh Wright, Sir, I am 52 years old and have started playing the piano when I was 38. Yet I managed to play Preludes and Fuges of Bach's amongst smaller pieces like Suite Bergamasque from Claude Debussy and a few others, but because I have that ability to memorise almost instantaniously any notes I would have to rend, I almost missed learning sight-reading. Whatsoever, I haven't been playing for at least 6 years now, and wanting to start again I felt very uncomfortable because of this lack of sight-reading. Since I discovered your channel my practice is getting better and I feel grateful to learning from you. Thank you very very much. You are, I think, an example for many of younger an older people out there through your humility and talent, and vice versa. (As I am frensh, my English might not be the best, so I beg you pardon for any faults and errors troughout this message). Best regards, Lionel

    I just got the book today.
    Today I learned my sight reading is dreadful.
    I can play the Friska of Hungarian rhapsody 2, but I can barely sightread the first grade level.
    That’s something I’m working to resolve now.
    Thanks, Josh for promoting it, and thanks Cory for making it.

      @@BCBeastiality to be frank this book's first grade is too difficult if you're trash at sight reading or a new pianist, you're better off picking an early level of Faber Piano Adventures Sightreading book and working through that. I started at level 2 and by the end of level 3 you're done. Takes a few months. In saying that, this book is appealing because as Josh said it's standard repertoire. You're not learning Bach with Piano Adventures.

    I'm a new subscriber, in my mid-sixties and only started piano about 5 years ago and I struggle with sight reading. (With practice, muscle memory kicks in but I forget to watch the notes and read.) I also can't simultaneously read the treble and bass clefs. What helps me is to first eye-read each note across each line --- plus say if it's a sharp or flat note. Another struggle is NOT to look down at the keyboard because I find I'll lose my spot in the piece. For some all of these may come easy but learning to play across 88 keys, read notes on the page, getting your brain to learn each note, fingers to the right location, fighting some difficult notations (1-e-and-ah, 1-and, 1-and-ah). Thanks for reading....

    Thanks Josh I joined piano marvel after your video last May and discover this book shortly after. The combination is powerful. I have systematically worked through the book every day since last August and have gone from really struggling to looking and reading 2 voice counterpoint to starting grade 6 which is 3 part harmony. I love the way this book builds confidence and lays a solid foundation for sight reading any material. The music makes it a real pleasure to sight read.

    I bought the Sight-reading and Harmony book. Although I've only had the book for a few days I must say that I'm very disappointed with the lack of fingering on most of the 3- and 4-part material. Dr. Hall omits it deliberately because he says students' hands and fingers differ, resulting in different fingerings. However, it would have been very useful to have been told what typical fingering is used, even though individual students might decide to alter it. I'm trying to play Bach's Common Cadences and find the absence of fingering really frustrating. Even when I work out a possible fingering sequence, I don't know if it's correct.

    • @Romulusuk
      @Romulusuk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mrbeezkeez1599 I disagree. It seems reasonable to me for fingering to be included. The Suzuki series of study books includes fingering where they think it will help and it is very useful.

    Josh..I love To have Bach and Phillip Emanuel Bach.. Not an expert player. I have been working
    On a similar concept, for my own personal studies on jazz songs like Donna Lee. The most advanced songs can be taught if
    a little extra is introduced every week. These would have to be constantly reviewed and the theory updated. Of course working with older material allows us to
    copy ..say Bach, Beethoven etc, and totally legal.. I may have done
    Minuet in G in midi programs like Score Creator or Maestro , ( both free programs). Writing music in programs like this has accelerated
    my progress. Additionally I train in a free app called Free Music Flash Cards. The weakness for many me and other readers is /was the bass F clef. Also my weakness used to be sayings like Ever good boy.. and cows eating grass. When I dropped these sayings and
    just say GBDFA and ACEG. I was 3 times faster as I kept a progress book. Gotta go. Btw. I just realized that I had not rang the bell. I'll try to check in every so often. I'll consider buying the book.

      Greg Satellitetechguy - i think the videos are on the website ‘well rounded pianist’. I got to the grade 5 Paul Harris having done the ABRSM SR books too. Somehow it just hadn’t added to my skill set much at all. Just a trudge through small exercises in various keys. Not enough time to consolidate I think. I’m reading more broadly now. It’s a tough gig learning to sight read when you’ve been a memoriser!

    I have a question for you Josh.
    Say you perform a scale, the length of the piano, both directions, what is the minimum requirement i.e. nbr of times, would you say to attain a good finger dexterity(if thats the right word), so your fingers are comfortable?
    E.g. would 10 times be evidence your fingers can achieve a basic pianism?
    Would you say 53 times be evidence your fingers can achieve a basic pianism?
    Pick any number really. Have musical lecturers decided or is it not something that is advocated?
    And the scales have to be reasonably fast because common sense suggests playing slow you could last forever. Being a pianist is like an athlete for sports. Or can be if you choose that for your playing.
    *pianism ( i was meaning at a high level, not truly virtuosic but can play at the standard level of performing classical music without gripes from people)

    It is a great resource for developing reading and is particularly appreciated because it presents progressively graded material that is consistently good musically and even at the simpler end has interesting and pleasing harmonies. That said, I've hit a wall and am unsure how to proceed. The wall I've hit is that I can sight read all the pieces with two voices at once with very good accuracy and at a decent tempo, yet when I try to move to these pieces with three voices at once I struggle so much that I can only manage them if I sight read them at a trudgingly slow tempo.
    I am unsure of two things: 1) what development/s happen that allow someone to go from reading 2 voices at once to handling 3 at once (and how I get them); 2) if my best course of action is to stay with 2 voice pieces despite that I handle them very well already, or to instead keep chipping away at the 3 voice pieces at the awful slow tempo I need to go to in order to manage them - I suspect the latter makes more sense as it allows practicing the specific thing I'm struggling with but welcome any advice.

    • @TheSIGHTREADINGProject
      @TheSIGHTREADINGProject 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Roman, I wonder how you're getting on with the Bach Scholar book now? I hit the wall constantly with it too and admire your perseverance. I am doing other things for now and will return to it in the future. It will one day be amazing for hand independence, but not yet...

    • @romanblanks1473
      @romanblanks1473 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheSIGHTREADINGProject Still struggling with the 3 voice pieces, but making sure I do other stuff to sort my reading out at the same time. Stumbled on something that seemed to make a noticeable difference in sight reading 2 voices at once: oddly enough it was to sight read 1 voice at a time but at a massively increased tempo. Did it in Sight Reading Factory with randomly generated pieces in a range of key and time signatures, lots of examples in one stave, then in the other, at breakneck speed, for an hour. Then when I returned to 2 voice sight reading at usual tempo, I had improved noticeably, both in objective results measuring and in my own subjective feeling whilst reading (I noticed I was looking ahead more, presumably because the high speed reading I had been doing the previous hour had absolutely demanded that I did so!). Worth a try if you're a SRF user or have access to something similar, not sure how you'd accomplish the same without procedurally generated sheet music (unless you have access to 6843908643684390864390 sheets at the right level!). Anyhow, still didn't break that 3 voice wall with SR&H, still bashing my head against it to see if it I can bust through - but definitely supplementing with other reading stuff at the same time so that if busting that wall needs something else to happen elsewhere I'm in a position to find a suitable sledgehammer ;)

    • @TheSIGHTREADINGProject
      @TheSIGHTREADINGProject 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Roman Blanks - Wow, well done though. It’s such a long process isn’t it! Really interesting to see about your use of sight reading factory. I keep meaning to look at that. Well, all the best with it all. I think the better our reading gets, the more wonderful music we will be able to explore and devour in our lifetimes compared to if we’d never decided to hit this. I see it as taking the time out now to enjoy huge benefits in the future (hopefully!) 👍

    • @romanblanks1473
      @romanblanks1473 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheSIGHTREADINGProject It is a very lengthy and gradual process that is mostly neglected even by taught pianists let alone those self-learning. As an auto-didact with great ears and hands, I'm hugely guilty of that neglect of sight-reading; I got to be able to play lots of complicated rags and concert level pieces without ever reading - let alone sight-reading - any sheet music or having lessons. But I came to realise my memory can only hold so many pieces in it - and only for so long without constant maintainence - and being good at reading lets you quickly get stuff back in there, so I should no longer dodge it and instead I'm now working on fixing it in a quite committed and systematic way (still without any teacher ever) :D. I'm glad you replied here because I'd not seen your channel before that and from seeing your channel you are doing quite a similar undertaking that I am (and may I say it is super-refreshing to find sight reading videos from someone who isn't a wizard sight reader already - it allows for sharing experiences that the wizard sight readers have probably forgotten going through!), so I've insta-subscribed. You're right, it is an investment for future benefit. We will get there, keep motivated.

    • @TheSIGHTREADINGProject
      @TheSIGHTREADINGProject 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roman Blanks - oh my goodness, yes! What you said about finding your memory could only hold so many pieces and maintaining being more difficult without reading skills. Same here! I was at such a low point after my grade 6 and those pieces were in tatters so soon after learning them, yet the reading being far ahead of my skill I couldn’t bear to maintain them while I learned Moon River (no time) and then they were gone! Too far gone to face.
      You’re right about it not necessarily being taught. I asked for help and time to focus on it from my teacher (I constantly couldn’t start at the bar she asked for in lesson) and was told it was not good use of time in lesson so I should do it at home. But with the constant expectation of progress in repertoire on me (taking up all my time because of being a bad reader!) I made zero progress despite snatching time at those Harris books every day. Well, it all fell apart November 2018 and I got upset in lesson when I once again constantly couldn’t jump in at ‘bar so and so’. I left lesson and just could not go back and face it again. Total block. And I miss my teacher, by the way, no hard feelings! So I really believe that like you said, as the pieces get harder, if the sight reading hasn’t come up with the student reading music, this kind of despondency we both came to, might be the death knell for many a students piano studies, if they think that it is just them as opposed to a fixable issue, reading.
      Well, this has been an awesome conversation! Very cathartic!! Nice to find someone going through the same.

    For someone who has advanced sight reading, is it worth it?

      Yes. I can learn a piece in a single day but forget it a few hours later. 😂

    All you do is sight read ANY piece of music. If a musician judges a piece of music to be poor you become a bad musician. Be like jesus christ. Love your composers, the so called enemies of what you think harmony and melodies should be like.
    On top of sight reading use franz liszt technical exercises.
