I have an STec 55 it still works well after about 20-25 years.
We installed a new 3100 in our conquest. Installed in a complete new all glass Garmin panel with a highly qualified shop.
We’ve had to replace, changed the 3100 with five new replacement units in the past two years.
All of them, but the last one have failed.
Un commanded disconnect during flight and on approaches. Flight director rollovers.
After two years, the last unit they provided is performing, but we’re still in a testing phase.
So far so good but it took me 2 1/2 years to get to this point after spending an absolute fortune on the panel.
It’s important to add that S Tech has some very good people working for it and back their product!
However, the amount of energy and time we’ve lost in trying to get the system to work has been frustrating and expensive to say the least.
👍✅ Interesting information for you, Baylee and thousands of others👏
Excellent episode Dan and Baylee. Lots of useful information about autopilots. Im anxious to see what you decide to put in Lola. I have a hunch it will be the S-Tec 3100. Keep up the excellent work. Safe skies my friends 🇺🇸🛩️
Have asked chat gpt to compare various AHRS systems and also various autopilots? If not, you might be surprised at the depth of useful information provided. It told me that S-Tec autopilots have broad compatibility with various AHRS manufacturers and GPS navigators and talked about the (lesser) compatibility of each of the other brands too. Also deep info about relative benefits, equipment cost and installation complexity and cost of various AHRS systems - which you had said you were evaluating at OSH.
Must be the same autopilot from the movie Airplane!
Thumbs up 👍
I feel like you're just shopping around for an influencer discount... Imagine thinking an stec 50 is ancient....
It is. Ive ripped two s-tec 50s out of my personal planes and replaced with Gamin autopilots.
If all people, you think Dan is trying to grovel his way into an influencer discount? Are you new here? Dan is probably one of THE most neutral aviation content creators in the industry.
If someone wants to offer him a discount for their product, then so be it. He’s not looking for handouts.
Thanks @VictoryAviation... Im looking at the different products and making decisions on which ones. After the decisions, if they want to work a deal with me, Im open. But I will let you guys know if that happens. I will admit to a bias of the Davids versus the Goliath. WHile Garmin makes good products, if I can find smaller companies that make quality products, Im more inclined to go that route.
