This was really scary to see

  • Tonight as the Detroit Red Wings played host to the Ottawa Senators, we had an wild opening period with a truly scary scene of Dylan Larkin out cold, face down on the ice. Joseph trying to clear Larkin away, caught him high as Larkin went right into Kelley who's right hand or maybe the butt end of the stick appears to knock Larkin out. Considering his past with neck injuries, this was hard to watch. Thankfully he did somewhat skate off on his own. On the play, Perron getting the wrong guy, cross checked Zub to the face as well in what was just a wild sequence all around in an opening period that also saw Kane score his first as a Red Wing. Plenty to unpack but I cover it all in todays NHL hockey video!

My heart sank when Larkin wasn't moving. He has a history of getting serious hits to the head and it pisses me off to see it happen again. Admittedly, it didn't look intentional but it still sucks regardless.
Perron made a boneheaded decision and got called for it. He arguably lost us the game by being the second forward to leave the game.

obviously Joseph didn't intentionally knock out Larkin but going at a guys head instead of the puck should be looked into and for Perron he should see further action and probably a suspension but any hockey player can tell you if you just saw your captain knocked out cold you're going for the person right there and taking action that's just how it is

joseph and or kelly shouldnt even be punching larkin in the back of the head when he doesn't even have possession of the puck. so its intent to injure by them 100% IN MY OPINION at least. Perron goes after the completely wrong and innocent guy which makes this just awful. If you're going to retaliate and do some dirty stuff, at least go after the dirty players that started it. But yea, very bad by perron. if perron goes after joseph instead, I would have been more OK with it. I think retaliation is OK after somebody just tried to knock ur captain out for the season (which joesph has done to larkin in the past) Like if thats me in that situation and i SAW joesph just punch my captain in the back of the neck/head and hes knocked out larkin for a whole season in the past. I don't think there was any intent to harm here. Scrums in front of the net get crazy. The hit high in the back should get called, and it did. I don't think Kelly was trying to hit in the head. He came in to hit in the chest, but the hit from behind knocked Larkin's head down into Kelly's hit.

I'm a Wings fan, I think they got it right. Kelly's contact looks totally accidental, but it was still to the head. Joseph's looks worse, but it's a loose puck scrum in front of the net, and he's trying to clear that area out. In the chaos, I don't think he hit Larkin where he meant to. Perron had more time to think about what he was doing and his hit was just as dangerous as anything Larkin could've been subjected to.

Possibly something called Cartoid Hypersensitivity. Hard impact on the front of the neck can cause a sort of pressure valve to detect high blood pressure, which it then adjusts blood pressure down causing you to pass out. From the multiple replays, Joseph's hit really doesn't look that bad. It clearly isn't a cross-check because Joseph doesn't have both hands on his stick and the stick isn't the primary contact point. It looks like a rough shove in the face, but certainly not enough to leave someone unconscious. If I had to guess, I'd argue that it was probably Kelly coming in from the front and hitting him square on the jaw as Larkin was falling that actually knocked him cold. In either case, it doesn't look intentional.

Preface with I am a Wings fan, so I am a little biased.
Unfortunate situation, but I don't think it was as malicious as I have seen. The wings saw worse garbage coming from the rat king in terms of dirty plays...
Looks like clear, albeit weak, contact to the head from Joseph, and then clear, but mostly accidental/reactionary contact from Kelley to Larkin's head that I could totally see as incidental.
I'm all for tough hockey, but we have to draw a line to prevent career ending injuries like these sort of blows to the heads.
I think Joseph should have gotten a double minor, but there isnt ruling for this in the NHL from what I have heard, and its too tough for me to tell if its a 5 minute major. Joseph has had a history, which makes this difficult to gauge. Id like to see him thrown out and suspended, but I have to recognize that this has a chance of being incidental and just plain unfortunate. If youre going to make a blow to someones head, you have to take full responsibility for what happens after....
Which leads into Perron's 100% deserved game misconduct, no argument there. I respect standing up for our Captain (and wish others did too). If i saw a player do that to one of our Wings, I would want them thrown out. I just wish he wouldve gotten the player right, and maybe not go for a stick to the face on Zeb. Totally legal, even if that punch leads to him lying face down motionless on the ice for 2 minutes (yeah yeah, Kelly's knockout blow was unintentional, but the NHL has a record of calling 5 minute majors on guys who commit minor penalties that lead to freak injuries). Tap a guy lightly anywhere remotely near his heavily padded gloves while he's in the offensive zone? Penalty, how dare you engage in such behavior!

And yes, it is obvious Perron's ejection was warranted for how it went down. We all knew his intent and sadly he got the wrong guy.

Honestly I don’t think joesph deserves a suspension. Was just an absolute freak accident. Larkin wasn’t knocked out because joesphs 2 hand push to the back of the head. It was the contact with Kelly’s that knocked him out. Kelly butt end of his stick caught him unintentionally. Kelly was just in the wrong spot at the wrong time with Larkin head being pushed into the momentum of kelly,.Then Larkin being knocked out falling face first to the ice made the entire impact that much worse. Kelly really shouldn’t of even got a penalty. He literally did nothing. Perron should definitely get a in-person hearing for that. 5 games at least. Retaliation and intent to injure.

Then the first and principal point of contact only his right hand to the face with an extending arm. Feels like a play. And I do mean premeditated. Hard to prove that, right but Joseph elevates for the hit to the head and Kelly just happens to be there for a perfect punch. Ya know, "not looking" but extending. Two consecutive headshots from different guys. On the PP where Larkin's in the middle. What are the chances? One of which was definitely not an accident, the other just happened to catch him falling chin first into a hard right hand? The view from the bench side really shows 27 delivering but you can tell he is throwing one from the camera/press box side ice level. I mean Kelly jumps when he sees it.

@@Jay-mm1kw Except cross check/punch Larkin in the head, that’s wrong and resulted in an injury at the very least Joseph should be suspended. If you think that was incidental or accidental then you need to go see an eye doctor. You’re right on the only one being suspended being Perron though, NHL is great at fucking that up.

pointless diatribe no one in Ottawa is happy about Larkin's injury but we do understand what happens in front of the net as almost all of us played the game and understand

There should be charges filed . This was an intentional hit . Larkin and this guy have issues .
