Flying United's Second-Longest Flight | San Francisco to Singapore 787-9 Trip Report [UA29]

  • Have you ever wondered what 16 hours crammed in the back of United economy is like? I found out so you never have to! Back in August, I flew United from San Francisco to Singapore as part of a $750 trip from Toronto to Singapore to Vancouver. This was a bare bones economy ticket, so preferred seating was pretty much out of the question. That meant that fresh off a 5-hour trip in Air Canada economy from Toronto, I had the pleasure of cramming into a 31’ x 17’ seat that would be my home for most of an entire day.
Other than showing you what United’s ultra-long haul economy product is like, I wanted to give you some of my favourite tips and tricks for surviving 10hr+ flights in the back. If you have any of your own tips to share, drop them in the comments below!
As always, huge thanks for watching and the support. Don’t forget to like, drop a comment and subscribe!

    THE TICKET
I paid $785 (CAD) for this ticket, which was from Toronto to Singapore through San Francisco, and returning to Vancouver through Tokyo on ANA. This came after a few weeks searching for a fun trip on ITA Matrix, and I had to book it through a travel agent. Luckily, I had an amazing one with Andrew at RTW Travel. Definitely check him out if you get the chance!

I survived the LA to Singapore route back in 2018 too! It was an unforgettable experience and one that I’ll cherish, being that United discontinued the route. Nice video and continued travels to you!

I took nonstop flight from Phoenix to Frankfurt on Condor. It’s a very long flight. I sleep on the plane. I was on the inaugural flight. The flight was so successful. Coming home from Frankfurt to Phoenix. It’s took 13 hours flight. I got all 3 empty seat. It wasn’t too much passengers. I flew on the 767-300ER. I was visiting my brother in Basel for a week. When I came back home. I was so extremely tired. I have sleep for most of the day. Because it’s a very long jet legged.

In the future -- for every Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft of all airlines (including United Airlines) parked at the gate with 2 jetbridges --, the gate MUST ALWAYS use BOTH jetbridges for passenger loading and unloading to ease the passenger traffic for both boarding and deplaning processes.

Headed out from Toronto for the same flight today, except on the night flight. Very nervous about such a long flight. I also got a great fare one way. Ended up going to premium economy a month ago. United’s website is really easy to use if you want to change seats or upgrade. I was surprised that when I upgraded my service they refunded the original seat booking price. It was only $9.00, but still thought it was nice.

17 inches of pitch sounds rough 😂. Also damn! Toronto to Singapore is quite the journey. Great flight review. Personally I’d be happy to deal with the uncomfortable seat (all 17 inches of it) if it meant flying on a Dreamliner. Bucket list material right there.

I did the same trip…but I connected on a flight from Newark. I did not “survive” I THOROUGHLY enjoyed it. In my humble opinion, you started the video off pretty negatively. Of course it was an ordeal if that was the mindset from the very beginning!! My focus was on the vacation and how lucky I was to be able to afford one of any kind.
These TH-cam travel videos will often make it seem like only business or first class are fit for humans. This is not true. Life is what you make of it and as long as you get there safely and enjoy your destination, Economy class is just fine.
If anyone is wondering (or even cares about this opinion) I am indeed a veteran of tons of long distance airline trips. Most of which have been in economy class (when I became an adult, paying my own way). Zero regrets and the experiences were GREAT.
PS: After Singapore, I went to Australia which was also the trip of a lifetime…also in economy
PPS: your tips and tricks were absolutely correct, in my experience. Never underestimate the benefits of plane yoga too!
