My bible was Spraycan Art. My older brother had one of these and it was absolutely fascinating. Back then, without the internet, I wasn't able to get something similar, as book stores said that's illegal stuff and they don't have anything like this...

Good question! No it’s not. Mtn/Montana colors is Spanish and Montana cans is German. It is really confusing!
MTN aka Montana Colors, made in Barcelona since 1994, is the original Montana and first spray paint brand made for graffiti writers by graffiti writers ever. Montana Cans was created later by a Germany company that used to distribute Montana products and tried to take over the business. German Montana Cans got the legal rights for the name Montana in 2001, that's why original Montana has to label products with MTN.
@@GraffitiBloq Since the early 90’s that Swiss-German brand Dupli-Color had a line called “Aerosol Art Colors” available in Germany, but it was never popular and they never invested seriously in graffiti market.
In 1994 Jordi Rubio launched Montana with the help of two graffiti writers that owned a graffiti & hiphop shop in Barcelona. This is the original Montana (today Montana Colors), made in Barcelona by graffiti writers for graffiti writers. Soon Montana became very popular among writers all over Europe.
In the mid 90’s two Germans formed a company called L&G Vertriebs GmbH that distributed Montana sprays and other graffiti products in Germany.
In 1998 Dupli-Colors merged with Motip from Netherlands and formed the Motip-Dupli Group, the largest spray paint company in Europe, selling dozens of different products all over the World.
L&G worked hard with Montana, they were exclusive distributors in Germany and other European countries and really helped develop Montana’s business. But soon things went sour between them.
L&G felt they should own the Montana business because they helped it grow. So they tried to make a deal with Motip-Dupli to produce their own “Montana” cans in Germany.
Motip-Dupli then tried to buy Montana in Spain without L&G.
But Jordi didn’t sell Montana so Motip-Dupli made the deal with L&G.
Motip-Dupli started producing “Montana” cans for L&G, and L&G sold them using the reputation built by Spanish Montana products. These cans looked exactly like Montana Hardcore from Spain: the same design, same label, same logo. Only difference was that they said “Made In Germany” instead of “Made in Spain”. Most people in Europe kept buying from L&G without noticing.
But with two Montana brands in the market soon shit went down, and it got dirty and nasty, from the streets to the courts - Motip Dupli and L&G were trying to shut down the Spanish Montana.
The name Montana was actually registered in Europe to an unrelated company from Switzerland. And in 2001 L&G managed to buy the legal rights for using the name. So “Montana Cans” was legally born, owned by L&G.
In 2002 Montana Cans (L&G) stopped copying the Spanish Hardcore design and launched their “new generation cans”, with a new design for the cans and a new Montana logo. This is the logo they still use today. Years later they launched new lines like Montana Gold, Montana Platinum, Montana Black, etc. With L&G and Motip-Dupli working together Montana Cans had stronger marketing, a bigger network of clients, and better resources to develop paint.
So Montana Cans became bigger and more popular than the original Montana Colors from Barcelona. Jordi couldn’t do nothing, he created the Montana brand for graffiti but had no exclusive rights for the name. He could call his company Montana Colors but had to change product labels for MTN. It looked like a “fake” Montana, but it was the original and true Montana.
Initially Motip-Dupli was simply the manufacturer for L&G.
But in 2005 Motip-Dupli bought the whole L&G company from their original owners.
I think Montana-Cans still say L&G Vertriebs GmbH in the label, but it belongs to Motip-Dupli Group, a group that has also bought many smaller companies and factories across Europe.
Trivia 1: the idea for Montana came from the two writers from Barcelona called Moockie and Kapi. Moockie and Kapi opened a graffiti / hiphop shop in the early 90’s called Bunker (years later Bunker shop would become the official Montana shop in Barcelona). After opening Bunker they came up with the idea to have a spray paint for graffiti writers in their shop. In 1993 they met with Jordi who worked for the Spanish spray paint brand Felton and presented their idea. Jordi saw the potential but the owners of Felton weren’t interested, so he quit his job in Felton and joined Moockie and Kapi to launch Montana in 1994. Jordi had the technical knowledge of paint industry, Moockie and Kapi had the knowledge of graffiti culture.
Trivia 2: in the late 90’s to early 2000’s, aside from Montana, L&G Vertriebs also had a brand called Aerosol Art Colors. Maybe it was a continuation of the line with the same name by Dupli-Color (?) but I don’t know the exact details. This brand had a Classic line and later also a Pro Line. Writers from that era may remember Pro Line, it was sold in the same shops that sold L&G Montana but was cheaper and the coverage was not good, some colors were very watery. If you try to go to their old website it will send you directly to the Montana Cans website.
