  • For millions of Thais, when they go to the voting booth, this is enough reason to cast the ballot for Palang Pracharat Party and General Prayut Chan-o-cha.
In fact, when the police fire rubber bullets at protestors, they don’t see police brutality against the people. They see those bullets as preventing the return of Thaksin Shinawatra.
Different characters have come and gone in Thailand’s 16 years and still ongoing political conflict. But one character remains central to the plot, Thaksin Shinawatra.
    He’s still everywhere.
In Clubhouse, he’s Tony Woodsome. To the red shirts, he’s the savior. Within the Pheu Thai party, he’s the true leader.
For Thailand’s traditionalists, from the casual conservatives to the hardcore monarchists, the reason they support General Prayut Chan-o-cha and the military is simply this:
They fear the return of Thaksin Shinawatra. A person they see as a national threat. Someone who would destroy all that is good and sacred about the Kingdom of Thailand.
It then begs the question, why so much fear and hatred of Thaksin Shinawatra?
    This video discusses two reasons.

Once again, a very good video. I believe that the legacy, to a degree, of the Thaksin government has been the 30 baht universal health scheme. By giving affordable health care to millions of poor Thais he has actually done something concrete to improve their lives. It is a pebble in the sandshoe of monarchists because it was generally accepted that HRH had the monopoly on taking care of the Thai people.

3:37 was that during Rama IX's speech where he said the PM and others can criticize the monarchy or something and everyone laughed?
3:46 I would say Rama IX was a great king when (during the military dictatorship of Kittikachorn & Thanarat) their Majesties went on provincial tours and patronized projects for developing the country. since the King kept endorsing coups, the people lost trust (outside of Bangkok) in the King and relied on Thaksin for their future
