This is a horrible title Magnus didn’t force spectators to do anything, a more appropriate title would be: Spectators applaud Magnus Carlsen while he holds on to a draw in the final seconds.
Im not grandmaster but it seems like the e4 pawn cannot be saved by the king or bishop so rook will just take that pawn on the next turn and then maybe trade off the rook for black's last pawn and would result in insufficient material draw because a king and bishop vs king cannot create checkmate
Because white will sacrifice the rook to take the pawn... once the pawn is gone, black will only have king and Bishop and they can't mate the white king
Comments like “white has to try hard to lose this” really makes me want to see her play as white against Duda with 10 seconds on the clock in that position.
Prior to Magnus making the first move we seen in this video, b3, I loaded that position into Stockfish. It has white with a very, very slight advantage, +0.17. It's roughly an equal position. Stockfish's third choice is the move Magnus made, b3. That leads to complete equality, 0.00. Stockfish thinks he should've played Rab3, moving his rook in *front* of his b-pawn. Still, it is roughly equal. There is no "winning" move.
After Rc8+ Kb3, ... He knew he had it because the King can't guard the e4 Pawn. He just needed him to leave the h5/c1 diagonal, ... otherwise Re8 could have been met with e3.

black's winning chances relied on those 2 pawns promoting. magnus' sole defensive idea is to stop that. in the last position the black king was too far away to defend e4, so magnus took with the rook and eventually the other pawn will fall as well, which leaves only kings and Rook vs bishop which is a theoretical draw
Insufficient material is not the only reason why a game is drawn. There are positions where neither side can make any progress, and nullifying eachother's (theoretical) winning chances becomes trivial. Like in tic-tac-toe.
after 1.b4, black can play 1...Rxb4 or 1...Bxb4. (1...Bxb4 2.Rb3 Re5+ ...and then black can safe his bishop). However, the resulting endgame is still a draw. Maybe Duda wanted to keep it a bit more complicated, thinking he can not lose this but has a little time advantage. With more material on the board he has more tactics available. I would have captured on b4, but I guess black has sufficient compensation if he does not capture on b4. (there are potential tactics in the air like at some point ...Rb2+ Rd2 RxR KxR Bxf2 possible with keeping more material on the board). Difficult decision, and it cost Duda quite some time.
My chess isn't good enough to follow this but was there no way for black to force march one of those pawns to the finish and make it a queen during this entire war of attrition? Or did black just not see the opening?
seems like there were a few times were Duda could have safely moved his second pawn in line with his most advanced pawn, stopping the king from being able to move up, no?
Magnus took the e4 pawn, so black was left with a pawn, a bishop with king, while white had a rook with the king.
