- Powerful Hurricane Beryl has hit Jamaica with heavy winds and rain, damaging buildings and felling trees on the Caribbean island.
The category four storm brought winds of up to 130mph (215km/h) on Jamaica's southern coast.
Social media photos show floodwater pouring down streets, with roofs ripped off by the wind.
The storm has killed at least seven people so far as it sweeps across the Caribbean. It has now been downgraded to a category three storm, and is due to make landfall in Mexico later on Friday.

I love how that tourist spoke on his experience with how rose hall handled the situation. It was very positive and honest.

Of course the tourists are protected in resorts and hotels… it’s a completely different situation for the locals.
Rose Hall is on the North Coast of Jamaica while the storm passed to the south of the island so where this guy is would have been fine, pretty much.

I've worked with many Jamaicans here in Canada, I'm from Europe but very nice people and cheerful, I love when I've visited Jamaica. The entire Caribbean is a beautiful area in this world.

The tourist said he was at the Hilton, 20 minutes east of Montego Bay. That’s on the northern side of the island, away from the worst of the storm, probably at least 40 to 50 miles from where the center of the storm passed. Not surprising the damage was minimal there. It is not indicative of what happened on the southern coast of Jamaica. But it looks like the storm passed a little to the south, keeping the worst of it away from the island.
Sadness for the fatalities and destruction and hoping the worst is behind and everyone is safe going forward , my son is there with 5 friends thankfully after a very tense day yesterday feeling powerless I’m so relieved for the island hearing from them that Beryl is calming 🙏 nature is powerful so is positivity and prayer 🇯🇲 sending healing and protection to all affected ❤️

Nature doesn't work like that my friend. Sometimes the season may throw a stronger storm or maybe the ones to come don't do as much damage if anything at all. Only God knows what's next but if Beryl was bad I am more inclined to think the others may not be as bad.

St. Elizabeth - Treasure beach area, family telling me. Water came in from under doors. Garage doors imploded, roofs ripped off. Digicel down and power turned off. Wind died down at 2:30am. Dog houses shredded, dont know what happened to farm animals - goats and all. Too dark to see, waiting for sun to come up to assess. Hope fishermen and all who lived by beach in shacks evacuated. Jakes and jack sprats and all i hope they evacuated.all trees flattened. Roads and pot holes flooded. I don't know about black river area. Waiting to hear more.

Can you believe st elizabeth - Treasure beach and surrounding - still without power, water, internet, food in fridge and freezer spoiling a week after beryl hit. Roofs still ripped off homes. Leaks still in homes. They have to drive 20 minutes to Flanagan to get cell service to contact loved ones. It's hot with no fan or AC. There is alot of elderly that are there that cannot do anything and rely on family and friends. What a nutty time.

Jamaica's central, north, NW, south, west, SW endured the worse part of the hurricane's wind gusts. Mo Bay endured a max 138mph wind gusts. Negril endured a max 107mph wind gusts.

@@IbnBahtutaJamaica isn't as damage as the media trying to portray it. Yes it flatten Grenada, but it didn't do that in Jamaica. Few roofs flew off and few trees down, that's it. Most homes in Jamaica are built with cinder blocks, not wood. Most of the buildings in Kingston are also concrete. Not saying there are not damages, but I think the media was looking for something devastating even before the storm.

He did not listen to the Government curfew, and was playing soccer outside during the rain, and the ball went into a gully or drain, he then try to retrieve the ball and was washed away. His body was found today.

Beryl passed Grand Cayman at 5:30am this Thursday morning, about 60 miles south of us, as a Cat 3. We did not lose power or water. The sea on Seven Mile Beach looked like glass. It was so smooth, but no, she passed us at 10:30am. The waves were starting to build, and a bit of rain. Thinking of the others who were deeply affected.

My take of this interview was this man and his wife who had to have seen there was a devastating Cat 4 hurricane barreling towards Jamaica just like the rest of the entire world, and still packed up their young children to go put them in harms way for a vacation 🤦🏻♂️
