I wouldn't call it a success. You deleted your data and used the sample data to demonstrate it was upgraded. The very first step should have been to export any databases so you have a backup which could then be imported. You did backup the original installation, which is good, but having the exported sql file would make life a lot easier when trying to get the new version working. I would also be sure to export the phpMyAdmin database so you don't lose any saved bookmarks.

Small mistake you have done! You must Copy paste the databases from data folder from backup. Then old databases will be available (6:24)
