- 2023 began on an auspicious note for our Nursery big girls. On 18th January, Naleku, Suguroi, and Sagateisa graduated to our Ithumba Reintegration Unit in Tsavo East National Park, where they will continue their journey to a life back in the wild.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

Thank you to all the keepers and staff at SWT for helping these elephants on their long journey to living back in the wild. It is so heart warming to follow their journey and see them so happy living in their new home at Ithumba. I love seeing the other elephants greet the new girls like old friends. Congratulations to Naleku, Suguroi and Sagateisa on your graduation to Tsavo.

And they will. These 3 very lucky and very joyous and happy phants have been blessed with love and care, are completely safe and protected, and have everything that they could ever want. These phants are living in complete bliss, all very simple pleasures, what else could they ever want? They're not complex beings like we are. Give them a spacious sanctuary, acres of greenery, a lake or river, food, and kind loving staff, and they have it made

Yes, it is such a blessing seeing lucky sanctuary elephants free from the discomfort and ill treatment that so many of the poor souls in training/show grounds recieve constantly. Thank God for all of the lucky saved elephants. And these phants have such simple pleasures. They aren't complex minded like we are, just give them acres of greenery, a lake or river, kind and gentle sanctuary staff, and other phants to mingle with, and they've got it made

My baby Naleku looks small again in the Ithumba herd. ❤ seeing those girls splash around in the water was magical. It sounded almost like they were laughing. I swear they were smiling. Thank you!

Sad at first for the elephants leaving their home because they were probably afraid. They didn't know yet they were going to a beautiful new home where they'll be happy for the rest of their lives. It was truly great to see them greeted by the other elephants and seeming so happy! I love them swimming, trumpeting, and of course a good old mud bath! Claudette: I had adopted Suguroi for myself( and for a young friend for her birthday who was touched by her gentle shyness) and also Sagateisa so I was pleased to see their graduation! Better yet I visited them both at Ithumba earlier this year and it was a thrill to visit both of my girls "in person" and they both are doing so well I am happy to report. Next time I visit I will ask to see Nakelu! Ithumba is such a lovely place with Benjamin as head keeper, who is a beautiful man who is so kind and loving towards all the elephants there!
P.S. I suspect it was Sagateisa whose mud hit the screen as she still just whole heartedly jumps in the water even now💕

What are those lumps on Sugoroi and Sagateisa's trunks? Sagateisa looks like she has 3 of them while Sugoroi has one underneath her trunk. It's the first time I've seen those. I hope they're nothing harmful.

After visiting SWT last October, I can say I know that highway, unloading platform, and Ithumba in general. Its much greener now, thankfully, due to the rainy season. 😊💗🐘

I think I would sling mud at the camera whilst I was having a lovely mud bath lol. Can you tell me what was stuck on their trunks when they came out the water it looked like snails? I cannot believe these wonderful elephants have already left the nursery I remember Neleku when they were little.

i am totally against that the wild has hunter killers is not safe why not stay there protected?
Each time it’s so moving they are so happy at Ithumba ! they have all what a éléphant need ! furthermore more they are welcome with their friends !! this graduation is a great step in their life but with a fantastic serenity !! 🫶🏻🐘💕🐘💕🐘💕
