Ghana's vice president John Mahama took the presidential oath of office on Tuesday night just hours after officials announced the country's leader had died.
President John Atta Mills died on Tuesday at a military hospital.
Government officials did not release the cause of his death, which came three days after his 68th birthday.
Atta Mills, who took power in 2009, had planned to seek re-election in December's poll.
Mahama was sworn in by Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood.
His swift inauguration underscored Ghana's stability in a part of the world where the deaths of other leaders have sparked coups.
