Winter Snow Storm In Idaho | 13 inches of SNOW | Chains, Traction Boards an ALOT of digging!!!

Have you ever heard of Stanley Idaho? It is famous for the Sawtooth Mountain Range....spectacular views, hiking, fishing, hot springs, backpacking, rafting and boating. If you like to be outdoors then you will LOVE Stanley Idaho!!! Stanley Idaho is also known for being one of the COLDEST places you can visit in the winter. We noticed that a snowstorm was in the forecast and we were not disappointed...... but how much snow can a Promaster Handle? Will our cable chains stand up to the test? Will we need our traction boards?
BEING STUCK IN A SNOWSTORM CAN BE LIFE THREATENING!! We do not take winter storms lightly, you will constantly hear us talk about watching the weather forecast when we are boondocking......ESPECIALLY IN A FWD PROMASTER VAN! Please note: we scouted this location carefully, it was close to a major road, we had cell reception, close to a town, we were stocked on food, water, and plenty of blankets!! And we had back up friends on call if we did manage to need help.
COPYCAT ZUPPA TOSCANA RECIPE
1 lb ground spicy Italian sausage - (mild can be substituted)
8 slices bacon, diced - (divided) optional
1 medium yellow onion, peeled and diced
24 oz chicken stock
4 large russet potatoes, peeled and diced into 1/2 inch pieces
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 bunch kale (a couple of handfuls) - de-stemmed and torn into bite sized pieces
1 package instant mashed potatoes for thickener
Salt and pepper, - to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
Heat a large dutch oven or heavy bottomed soup pot over MED-HIGH heat. Add a small drizzle of oil, then brown sausage, crumbling as it cooks. Drain well, then remove to a plate.
Fry bacon is residual sausage grease until crisp, then remove to plate with the sausage. Drain all but 1 - 1 1/2 Tbsp of bacon grease (optional)
Add onion to pot and cook 5 minutes,
Pour in chicken stock, stirring as you pour. Add in potatoes and bring to a boil.
Gently boil about 15 minutes, or until potatoes are fork-tender. Add in cooked sausage, most of the bacon, heavy cream and kale. Stir and cook 5-10 minutes until kale is wilted.
Lastly add instant mashed potatoes until soup is your desired consistency
Taste and season with salt, pepper and red pepper flakes if desired. Top with remaining bacon and enjoy!

Chains aand a long shovel are a must.
We had a shovel and crappy chains that failed! Did not use our shovel at all but the traction’s boards were worth their weight in gold! They made a really good shovel for the snow as well! A good set of chains ( we now have) is also a must!

Could have used the kayak as a sled to haul the wood. Saves a lot of wear and tear on the back. Has to be one of your best videos yet. The drama of the blizzard is more interesting than watching cactus grow in Arizona.
That would have been a lot easier!! Or using the kayak to sled down the hill into the water..... that would have been exciting! Blizzards are fun.... when you are prepared!!! Cactus growing.... not so much but the sun feels AMAZING!!

Really shouldn’t be in conditions like this without the proper rig. If you’ve got a capable vehicle it’s no problem and a ton of fun.
You need a set of truck chains with grousers. A heavy tarp attached under the lip of the hood draped between the front wheels will keep the snow from building up beneath and in front of the van. Been there done that from miles!!! Happy snow camping!!! Happy Holidays!!!

That was such a fun camp trip! We did learn from this as you said. Those cable chains we're no good for serious work. We ended up buying real tire chains and found them to be superior! I love the snow! 😀😀😀

During you're winter get aways, try salting the solar panel surface and continue brooming off the snow +add more salt.
Scraping ice repeatly will damage the panels.
Salt is cheaper, available in Stanley, than having to replace panel(s).

We just like to visit and then head south! We are definitely limited during winter! A 4X4 and truck camper is a good option...... but we really love our van! We are headed south to Arizona! Merry Christmas 🎄
What an Advanture! You need to invest in some heavy duty snow chains, I think you would of made it out on the first try if you had some good chains.

My heart was pounding with you trying to help you get out from over here. I admire your determination to build the fire.
I love shoveling snow and have a talent for getting the van stuck! 😂😂 When we first started out we rarely did campfires because we didn't like the smell of the smoke on our clothes and inside the van the next day. Well, we are over that now and make a fire every chance we get. Sitting next to a campfire has a calming effect and we enjoy cooking on the red hot coals. 😀

+The Salty Medic I’ve learned that if we go to the snow and experience all the joy ( and not so fun things that come along with snow) he is ready to head out of the snow sooner rather than later! Petrolium jelly dollar tree and cotton best fire starter ever in all conditions.
OB tampon (individually wrapped in plastic) and a small squirt of rubbing alcohol. Alcohol burns off long enough to start your tinder, then the cotton from the pon starts to burn.
I think I would have moved my campsite a lot closer to the road before the storm came in. I admire your tenacity, but better planning on your part next time will make your life a lot easier!

You have found one of my weaknesses! 😂 I don't know the answer to your question. We went with a goal zero 1400 lithium power station for an easy install. In the winter we can take in about 250 watts an hour max. The summer when the sun is higher the max is around 330 watts an hour. That means we can charge our power station in about 4 hours from 0 to 100 percent. Sorry I don't have a smarter answer 😂😂😂
I don't know if it's your body naturally reacting to the cold or what but it always seems like you're always hungry or always enjoy your food more in the winter sitting out like that that's great you guys did a great job dig it out and everything that was great peace be with you and many thanks and please be safe have a good one

You could've used a hair dryer or a small propane torch to melt the ice. Next time if your stopped and there's snow in the forecast you could put plastic over the panels.

The wind was cold but the fire was still warm! A raised van would definitely help....airbags maybe a little😃 Real changes that don’t break REALLY help😂. We now own a set!!

Even a 4x4 Sprinter or Transit you'll have problems in snow like that. Those chains work pretty good...front wheel drive too seemed to be pretty good in that snow until they broke.

when using tire chains one must be careful not to spin your wheels because when it spins it is easy to exceed the speed limit of the chains causing failure as you have found out. I like your channel, lots of great camping spots.
