  • How long does oak firewood take to dry/season? In this firewood video I talk about how long it takes for oak firewood to dry/season after splitting. I then have Bill of ‪@backspingraphics‬ help me put a ‪@IronOakSawmill‬ sticker (that he made) on to my old but revered red tailgate from my former delivery truck. If you would like to order JPF merchandise or have Bill custom make merchandise for your channel or business, feel free to contact him here:

This was helpful. It’s true oak takes long to season, but when it’s ready you can’t find a better firewood.

If you own a hydraulic splitter, you can drastically lower drying times by simply splitting in smaller sizes. I split mine down to the size of a 2by 6.

Instead of bigger shocks go with helper springs. Very easy to do yourself, they bolt on the axel. Made a world of difference in what I can haul.

You are 100 percent correct. I like the bolt on ‘Helwg’ brand helper springs, because your truck will still ride normal until you load it heavy.

Ive never had any trouble seasoning oak. I tryin split mine 4" square or so. I cut it in the early spring, usually wind blown down trees. I do stack mine about 1ft off the ground and also stack it to where the wind blows through it west to east. I dont ever cover it unless we're expecting snow, and its in a sunny location. Mine goes from green to 15% moisture by late fall. I just use a moisture meter from lowes, but ive been doin it that way for 17 years. When i clean my chimney, its never to aweful. I clean it once a year. When i burn i tryin make it a point to get the fire up to around 600 degrees on the stove pipe thermometer a few times a day to tryin help keep creasote to a minimum. Seems to work fairly well. Everybody does it differently and thats just my experiences.

JOE I'm a FIREWOOD processor like you here in mizzou. Red oak has 65 percent moisture when cut green. It's the longest to dry FIREWOOD there's period. We cut on some properties that have standing dead red oaks that have been dead 8 to 10cyears or more. All the firewood you can burn but the trunk pieces!

    • @bossforever1865

We like white oak it takes about 8 months to burn if green around here. Standing dead and backless there's no better wood to burn except locast and hedge Hickory nice too. About 6 to 8 months here you can burn the Hickory.

Full play & 👍 I used to laugh. When we ran our airbnb. We would leave dry wood. If they ran out we had racks of wood. Often they would grab green over seasoned. I'd see green red oak that never burned. We would tell them what wood to grab. A couple of them said they thought the other wood looked nicer lol. Your right the feel of water is noticeable.

Joe it is amazing how long it takes oak to season even down here in Virginia. I hope your knee heals soon, 3 weeks ago I had shoulder surgery, I'm having a hard time not trying to run the splitter but I'm in a sling. Going to try to hire a high school guy next week to see if we can get some splitting done. Keep on splitting!!

You nailed it they are several factors where I live my oak is ready in a little under a year it’s in constant sunlight and it’s a lot hotter down here. I also don’t like to get any wood while the leaves are on it unless it’s easy to get that crap takes forever to dry.

    • @JoesFirewoodVideosII

Exactly Shawn, if the trees are cut down it should be like in December - February when there are no leaves or sap flowing but still will take a while

99% of the wood in Tennessee is red or green oak. Healthy tree, cut, split, and properly stacked in a sunny windy environment takes two full years to season properly and read below 18%. You can get anything to burn ,although most people get pissed when their fire is smothered in smoke and reaks of cat urine because it's wet.

Sorry but while Sunny Days help in drying, Winter is best for rapid moisture extraction(SPLIT hand size.)
I try, as much as possible, to split the Bark off to reduce moisture retention.
Also, whenever possible, leave the top uncovered. Cover(top only) as winter approaches.
I do like that your stacks are relatively loose to allow for better air flow.
