The big issue of the Vita version was that it could run much better if it wasn't trying to run at native resolution. WipeOut 2048 and Killzone used dynamic resolution for a reason, and Uncharted Golden Abyss and few other Sony made Vita titles also did not run the native resolution, that is probably why most of them run better than borderlands 2. I noticed that there were 2 studios working on this collection. Perhaps one studio did better than the other with TPS? There appears to be a proper different approach between 1 & 2 and then TPS.
@Steven Turner I never attacked any studio. I simply said someone did a better job. TPS is leaps and bounds better ported (the haptic is great, there is FOV, the frames are smooth WITH antialiasing, etc.) so while 1 and 2 aren't BAD...whichever studio that ported TPS did an objectively better job of it. According to the devs listed, it appears Behaviour Interactive would be the ones that did. Again - not trying to throw the games under the bus - I know most people don't enjoy TPS as much as B2...but you have to hand it to the TPS devs- it's a better port.

@@mamaharumi dude do you know how much they cost? Do you know alot of big games are only part an then the other half is download? Like wtf. Y'all need to do research to understand why companies do that.
Pretty much. The only thing causing drops are the alpha effects (because of the low bandwidth, this is a common issue on the system). Lower res alphas would help with that.
Got to lvl 80 and OP8, still runs smoothly. Even in pyro Pete's bar where its a cluster fuck. The fps does dip very slightly sometimes tho but still very playable. The fps DOES tank if you use an element on an enemy (lets say shock or explosive) and you scope in on them. For some reason the close up on the elemental effects hurts the fps.
Should have included the Shield ports as well. Good way to compare Tegra x1 (swiitch portable) and tegra K1 since the shield port allows most pc settings you can make the settings equal. Then compare it to Switch Docked vs Nvidia shield TV.
@@rhysjones8506 sure it's cool when you don't have to wait for a port to be released. Any game is available from ancient times till Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 right from the launch of the device.
@jvalex18 >>no AAA game release at 5 bucks. Yes, Switch ridiculously overprice even ancient games such as Borderlands. That's why I bought my version on a Steam sale for no more than $5 right at the launch of my portable console two years ago.
DF really needs to play the games they test for way longer. If you think drops are rare in the pre sequel you haven't played far enough. It gets super rough in 2 player splitscreen and we're not even halfway through the game yet. I will admit it's better than the PS3 version, but it'll drop frames just like the PS3 in big firefights which makes and FPS game hard.
After playing Borderlands 2 for over 20 hours and about to start Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, I can confirm that the frame rate issues do persist after the mentioned 3 hour mark; but, it's only noticable in elemental builds when multiple enemies suffering from status effects are swarming around the character. As for BL2 DLC, they definately run smoother, but the lower quality visual effects are fairly noticable in Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon's Keep and TK Baha's Bloody Harvest.
Great video. Glad you've been tackling all these recent Switch ports. Hoping an XCOM2 one is following. I know in theory performance isn't super important in a turn-based game like that, but I'd like to see how good a job they've done with it.
What about the huge input lag? It's really bad. As a test I loaded up BL1 on my pc and capped the framerate to 30. It's way more responsive than switch. Thr joystick deadzone is also huge and not adjustable. Gyro only helps so much...
So if they apply every technique used in the pre sequel, all 3 games would run at a locked 30FPS, Dynamic res would definitely allow them to add DoF to the first 2 games too...
The second game also has a glitch which prevents you from using the infinity pistol . I got one and the ammo counter for it is 0/x when it should be 1/x and it doesn’t allow me to reload or shoot which is weird . Hopefully a patch addresses that
I'm surprised Borderlands 2 doesn't have the audio bug fixed and there's no FOV slider like the other 2 games. Also the gyro differences between all 3 games while having no aim assist for some reason.
It's a 3rd party game which you can already get a better version of for which ever other platform you game on at the moment, Nintendo don't do pro more power versions of they're systems sorry
i think if they could lower the particles resolution and values, it would be a lot safer for the gpu, specialy in those boss battles full of explosions!
For next console or hybrid console iteration nintendo should consider enough power headroom to keep up with next gen Sony and MS consoles. Intensive ported AAA games like borderlands and wolfenstein are taking the switch to its limit already even with huge res drops and graphics compromise.
Its really just a case of if they can do that and keep the price down, battery life up, and size about the same or smaller. I doubt they would want to release a switch 2 for $400
It would be great to see a comparison of every console release of Borderlands 2, specifically from the Xbox, to the Vita, PS4/XBO and Switch. Randy Pitchfods money machine has had a lot of versions.
Looking back on this, it's a *real* shame that they didn't just have all the high end effects (depth of field, bloom, etc.) on the first two games with dynamic resolution. It just would've been better that way from an overall presentation perspective. Not to mention, this would've also helped performance as Pre-Sequel is more intense, but performs fine with all those effects and the dynamic resolution.
I don’t understand with anyone would bother playing this docked. The form factor is the selling point. Do some grinding in handheld while you have Netflix on in the background.
I wonder when the commander Lilith dlc is going to release on the switch . Currently on TVHM with gaige. Started of my play though right , got a bee shield , Harold and fastball . Play this on pc , ps4 and am loving it on switch . Farming on the go. Can’t beat that. Big props to the porting team !!
Both really. However to answer your question I'd say more open world. Borderlands is like open world but with loading screens between zones. If you play purely the story though it will feel like a mission based game, moving from point to point. Doing the other content makes you drive around, explore and loot like an open world game.
Its mixed, you do have story missions that are linear, and you unlock more areas as you progress the story, but there are side missions and the areas are large and there is lots of exploration, but its not open open world like skyrim.
Erm. It is based on larger areas which have transitions. So depending on map/mission, you have full variety from semi-open world, to corridor dungeons. It all clicks, and makes this game a greatest looter shooter. Also, BL2 is the king.
It's and open world, but game doesn't have one map the world is splitted into multiple locations. But you can pretty much go through the world as you like.
The games on the whole feature interconnected reasonably sized outdoor sandbox areas (divided by loading screens) and smaller more linear indoor areas.
I would like an option to unlock FPS, and borderlands games run smooth 30fps at 307mhz gpu clock which mean it will run much smoother with unlocked fps and 384mhz (which a lot of switch games used)
You really should do a comparison with the Nvidia Shield version of Borderlands 2. Since both the Shield and the Switch use the Nvidia Tegra X1 SoC, I think it would be interesting to see just what kind of improvements were made to the Switch port.
I like how when the video zooms in on the non existent aliasing at the start, the dude just flips off the camera lol. Surprisingly I think the lack of any kind of bokeh in the first two games actually works in the presentations favor. It's looks muddy and fake on the Xbox One version from what we see here.
As tempting it is to get this just for the portable aspect alone, I don't really see myself wanting to replay these games on the Switch rather on my PC, maybe in the future if I can get it heavily discounted.

@Repo man thats wrong. All the borderlands have gyro
Gyro is the future!
@@excadrillo99 agreed I love gyro! I hope the upcoming consoles include them.
@Repo man Borderlands has it. Bioshock doesn't.
@JJ Yes, keyboard and mouse exist, but some people own these things called "consoles" and might not want to sit at a desk or use a keyboard on their lap. Gyro makes it so controllers can aim better and so I hope Sony and Microsoft finally catch on to including it for people who want it
I’m surprised this video didn’t talk about the adjustable FOV in the first game and Pre-Sequel that’s absent from Borderlands 2
I recently picked up a switch and i just might have to get this eventually, BL2 is one of my top 3 favorite games of all time and i wouldn't mind doing a new build on a handheld
And I'm here stuck with the ps vita version lol
I still like my vita to bad sony didn't support it
@@kevinvanneste2500 Vita and Dreamcast, 2 amazing underrated systems
Man that sucks... IF you want you can overclock your vita to max and drop the resolution down a bit and it stays at 30fps most of the time.
@@MisticDW I would compared vita with Dreamcast, DC gave us incredible experiences, vita was just another portable sabotage by its own creator.
Vita was wasted potential, dreamcast had hardships due to sega last bad decisions, one had everything for it to be great (at the moment, 3ds, his only rival was heavily criticize for its price and lower sells, remember the 3ds Nintendo embassador project?, They give us GBA and other Virtual console games to 3ds owners to tackle the critics Nintendo giving free games, that big was the situation XD), Dreamcast had to of the best consoles as rivals, imagined that! (There are a lot of DC exclusive that couldn't get localized).
Definitely not the same.
Lol I played it. It's so unbearable. I can't believe how far I got in it. It's a fun experience on the little thing even though it doesn't run very well though.
I have been waiting for this analysis!!! I can now die happy. Thank you DF😌
Please do so then

4:33 The Pre Sequel released in 2014, not 2012. BL2 released in 2012.
I noticed that there were 2 studios working on this collection. Perhaps one studio did better than the other with TPS? There appears to be a proper different approach between 1 & 2 and then TPS.
1 and 2 run nicely on Switch, I haven't tried TPS because I didn't enjoy it.
Wow in all this year's playing borderlands I never notice that Mordrcai WAS giving the finger
It's a shame they skimped out on having the physical cartridge hold all the games. If I ever pick this up it's gotta be on sale
Why is it a shame? Do you know how much that shit will cost? It ain't cheaper I don't get why y'all don't understand that
@@donnellbrown4575 No one said it would be cheaper. They didnt even put the entire first game on the cartridge, only half. The rest is downloadable which was a shitty decision.
@@mamaharumi dude do you know how much they cost? Do you know alot of big games are only part an then the other half is download? Like wtf. Y'all need to do research to understand why companies do that.
I’m waiting for Premium $500 Switch with 1080p portable graphics
It wouldn't fit. Biggest cartridge is 32 GB and all 3x games are 43GB
So .. if they halved the alpha effects and used dynamic res on the 1. and 2. game, they would all be perfect ?
Pretty much. The only thing causing drops are the alpha effects (because of the low bandwidth, this is a common issue on the system).
Lower res alphas would help with that.
The fact they got borderlands 2 working on the fucking vita still blows my mind to this day
It was possible to run borderlands 2 on PS Vita because it was all thanks to the unreal engine it is designed to run on mobile chips as well 😉👍
Finally!!! I've beaten borderlands 1 and man it's beautiful af
Not on Switch
@@omarcomming722 what???
@@omarcomming722 huh? I've beaten all of them on the 360 when they first came out. I just finally beaten borderlands 1 with all dlc on switch
I'm curious how BL2 will do once you get to higher levels. It was pretty rough on the original consoles.
@@robertyoung406 can you level me up bro 😅
@@RealRagnar816 Classic😂
For some reason, I was expecting this to run at 720p60...
you could do that if you mod your switch
Should have included the Shield ports as well. Good way to compare Tegra x1 (swiitch portable) and tegra K1 since the shield port allows most pc settings you can make the settings equal. Then compare it to Switch Docked vs Nvidia shield TV.
Doesn't the background look better on the Switch at times? Like at 4:14
Besides that, I can't really see any difference between the consoles?
Damn, the lack of blur effects makes the switch version look significantly better than xbox one in some very specific situations.
Played portable Borderlands 2 almost two years ago at 60fps 720p max textures and shadows for a fracture of the price the game now comes on Switch.
Um cool?
@@rhysjones8506 sure it's cool when you don't have to wait for a port to be released. Any game is available from ancient times till Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 right from the launch of the device.
True, but I still prefer the switch
@@jacobjordan8340 I understand. It has to be so cool to wait several years for a port instead of getting it right away at launch for 5 bucks.
@jvalex18 >>no AAA game release at 5 bucks.
Yes, Switch ridiculously overprice even ancient games such as Borderlands. That's why I bought my version on a Steam sale for no more than $5 right at the launch of my portable console two years ago.
Always been a borderlands fan so the thought of being able to play it portably is awesome. Debating getting a switch for this and zelda
The Legendary Collection is $10 on the Nintendo eShop right now for the next week.
@@truthspirit4433should I buy it. It's on sell again
thank goodness a 2017 system can run as well as a 2006 one
I was expecting more of digital foundry on this one. They should had comparared the vita and the shield version.
BL3 already announced for switch, fall 2020.
This didn't old well
@@keksiur5622It’s aged well
DF really needs to play the games they test for way longer.
The best looking port ,feels like this was made for the switch ground up
Great video.
Gyro only helps so much...
how long did it take for muzzle flash to come back? it's missing on a lot of guns for me, mostly shotguns and combat rifles
2:45 didn't even mention the missing terrain geometry. Why?
3:12
So if they apply every technique used in the pre sequel, all 3 games would run at a locked 30FPS, Dynamic res would definitely allow them to add DoF to the first 2 games too...
Top shelf DF content.
Its incredible what a Tegra chip is capable of. I wonder how good will a latest gen arm chip? Will it get close to Xbox One S perfomance?
been waiting for this!
The second game also has a glitch which prevents you from using the infinity pistol . I got one and the ammo counter for it is 0/x when it should be 1/x and it doesn’t allow me to reload or shoot which is weird . Hopefully a patch addresses that
Hey, not a glitch. Were you playing Gaige?
@@Somewhat_Hollow yes I was. This reply took two years to late
I'm surprised Borderlands 2 doesn't have the audio bug fixed and there's no FOV slider like the other 2 games.
Also the gyro differences between all 3 games while having no aim assist for some reason.
I can't wait until they come out with an upgraded version of the switch, I'll definitely buy that!
The Switch Lite feels like an upgrade.
@@codyw518 battery life sure, but better specs would be ideal.

All 3 games run great on the handheld.
Honestly this is the best port on switch yet
Been waiting ages for these!!
I was expecting DF would elaborate on the jittering that takes place in TPS, but they didn't bother having a look at frame-time this time. Oh well.
2:05. Have you heard about the bird?? Bird, bird, bird, flippin' the bird!!
yes I've been waiting for this!!!
I doubt they would want to release a switch 2 for $400
if nintendo release switch pro with a capability of runnin anygames at 1080p/60fps portable , ps5 and xbox will be shakin
so basically the switch version removed effects that i would normally disabled anyway, that's great
It’s the Borderlands experience on Switch. Unless your playing both versions side by side, you won’t notice much difference.
It would be great to see a comparison of every console release of Borderlands 2, specifically from the Xbox, to the Vita, PS4/XBO and Switch. Randy Pitchfods money machine has had a lot of versions.
Was getting flashbacks to the vita port of bl2...glad that’s not what we have here
How many frames does XBox/PS4 render in portable mode? 4K Zero frames per second.
Look like a sharp portable experience to me. Good job on the port.
Sure would have been nice if they jammed this collection into a cartridge.
It doesn't feel like you got far enough in the game to sample performance and resolutions
For people who played this game.
It is an open world game or it is more level based?
I hope Switch gets Borderlands 3 some day soon
I would like an option to unlock FPS, and borderlands games run smooth 30fps at 307mhz gpu clock which mean it will run much smoother with unlocked fps and 384mhz (which a lot of switch games used)
Has anyone tried these games on the RPCS3 emulator? Do they run as well as the Switch versions?
You really should do a comparison with the Nvidia Shield version of Borderlands 2. Since both the Shield and the Switch use the Nvidia Tegra X1 SoC, I think it would be interesting to see just what kind of improvements were made to the Switch port.
IIRC Nvidia Shield runs at significantly higher clock.
I've noticed the framerate drops in 2 when there are fire effects right in your face, but it's not egregious, and game still feels great to play.
I like how when the video zooms in on the non existent aliasing at the start, the dude just flips off the camera lol. Surprisingly I think the lack of any kind of bokeh in the first two games actually works in the presentations favor. It's looks muddy and fake on the Xbox One version from what we see here.
2:08 I see what you did there DF.
I see DF, I click.

he didn't talk about the fov sliders in bl1 and TPS but not in bl2
As tempting it is to get this just for the portable aspect alone, I don't really see myself wanting to replay these games on the Switch rather on my PC, maybe in the future if I can get it heavily discounted.
