In this video I remove the lower control arm bushing, guide rod, brake support mounting bracket ball joint, and the brake support bracket bushings. As most of the W126 enthusiasts probably realize, specialty tools for this type of work
can be pricey so the home hobbyist is often left to get rather inventive!

Thank you! Those are the best and most complete videos on the w126/w123 suspension rebuilts. Heads up from Germany!
Thanks for the kind words. Cheers.
Super helpful as I plan to tackle this project soon on my 560SEC. Thanks!
Fantastic.
My problem is 1983 300SD rusted so that bracket is floating from the frame, at one of the cylindrical bushing housing. So the challenge is how to re-attach it with integrity. Welding?
The braking support bracket bolts to the car with two large bolts and to the cross member with three smaller bolts. Are you saying that one of the bolts is not screwed into anything? Keep in mind that these large bolts screw into a capture nut insert that is not actually part of the frame of the car. It sounds as though it is this capture nut that is missing or corroded on your car. You may be able to replace it without too much trouble. Thoughts ?
Dude you must have a drill press if you have a lift. Why are you attacking the bushings with a dremel?
I can't remember now. Might not have had a drill bit large enough. I do have a drill press. I used a unit-bit on the second one.
I was thinking the same thing. He has a press too. I love watching his videos. He keeps the audience entertained. I like when goes outback on shit.
Do I need to remove the spring to remove bottom part? I was looking at it and probably there is room for the bolt to come out without removing. We already talked abou it. What do you think? Thanks a lot.
The factory service manual says this is possible. It says to push the lower control arm forward in some fashion. Honestly I think they were high when they wrote that. I wouldn't even think about trying to do this with the spring in place. Taking a spring out is a royal pain but it's required in my opinion.
Thanks for your great videos. I have a 1983 240D, replaced the guide rods with URO brand and just 500 miles later one of them came apart at the ball socket. IS THIS NORMAL? The oem guide rods were torn(the rubber part) but they were still holding. Now I am afraid that this could happen when you're going 60mph. I ordered a set of Lemfoerder brand. Thanks in advance for your help.
Yeah Uro is crap. I don't buy their products.
Stick with Lemfoerder, Febi and of course Mercedes where possible. Just my opinion of course.
@@ImpalamansGarage Thanks for your advice, I just hope that the other brands don't come apart like that..
At 5:50, it doesn't even move when I hammer it
Various things you can try. Clamp it in a vise and use a bigger hammer OR heat aluminum housing gently with a propane torch. (GENTLY) OR soak the whole thing in a bucket full of used oil. OR You could start drilling holes in the bushing to eventually break it apart. I would not expect the job to be easy. That may take you a while. Lastly you could throw it away and buy a whole new one that already has bushings jnstalled. Just bring money.
