Darrel, thanks for posting this! Malcom was my inspiration years back, and I’ve never really seen any of his videos. This was great!

Good modeling is good modeling, this mans work is outstanding. I appreciate all art and especially all types of modeling. And for me "Model Railroading" is about the most exciting form of model making there is. Now I love to see highly detailed and well researched prototype modelers work. Depending on the scenes modeled they can be fantastic creations to wonder at. But my favorite modeling are the "freelance imagination models" these sorts of creations carve a wonderous, miniature world out of a room space and when the detail is of this quality, it will draw the viewer into the creation. I believe this is the ultimate level of craftsmanship you can achieve.
As the visitor begins to imagine themselves in this world and the wild, rugged scenery and tall mountains and terrifying trestles and bridges hold you and you find you stare longer than you should and you discover the depths of the fun little scenes within scenes often found in work of this quality. Malcom and men like John Allen before him brought their worlds to life, there is something magic about these places. The visitors imagination is sparked and pulled on as you see things of great beauty but never before seen in the real world. This desire to take this all in and the enjoyment of standing in such a strange tiny world like some giant in a story gives anyone seeing this wild little world a stronger memory than any of the wonderful prototype models as there are pictures of those places those bridges are common and everything is somewhat already known. The Magic everyone often mentions has noting to do with quality of workmanship, it is the emotion that comes from the feelings your visit created for you and the memories of it always give off some of that magic even many years later.
I have interviewed many visitors to John Allen's layout now and I am always looking for more people. I can tell you these lucky people all speak of a strange sort of wonderful transition your brain goes through as you stand in a space like that. And the feeling you did not spend enough time to take it all in as you leave. In fact it all seems a bit like a dream. The memories of John's place in Monterey still can create that same enthusiasm in the telling and you can almost see the grins on faces as they speak of John and his miniature world.
Now I have never seen Malcolm's place. I might yet still get a chance to do so, but from those I have spoken with now who have visited Malcolm's home they have this same sort of grin in their voices and the memory is bright and brilliant as these kinds of places seem to make for the best memories.
