Michelina's is awful; as is Lean Cuisine. It's been at least a decade since I bought either brand. They are so bad I won't even buy them on a BOGO sale; i.e., 50% off MSRP.
Stouffer's and Marie Calendar usually rotate weekly/monthly sales in my area. I can (and often do) pick up five frozen meals for $10. End price is $2/meal - not bad. If i'm really, really hungry after a long day, i'll cook two and add a couple of cups of mixed vegetables, garlic bread and either a side dalad or another side vegetable. Easy eating on the cheap.

as a Swede I have to say holy crap when I saw the table of contents on the first one. of course it's for the meatballs, the sauce and the pasta. would have been easier if it was divided, like content meatballs, content sauce, content pasta. and then I saw soy protein, I suspect it is surface filler in the meatballs. then the question is how much percentage is in them. plus whatever else is stuffed into them. it's a bit about seasoning etc. this is probably the closest thing I can find to classic Swedish meatballs. much of what they have in the batter today was not available in Sweden in the 50s. like, if you have garlic in the batter, it will be more Greek keftedes. 1/2 dl breadcrumbs 1 dl milk 1 egg 1 yellow onion 500 g mixed minced meat 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp black pepper butter to fry in
I'm not that old yet lol, but the stouffer's Swedish meatballs were better before they came in the bowl. You use to have to either microwave them (I think) or boil them in their pouches. It just doesn't taste the same
Would it help to add some spices, like thyme and nutmeg to the less flavorful ones? Perhaps adding a tablespoon of sour cream or even regular cream would help. Idk, just a thought. Y'all have a blessed day 💖✝
How about recreating this with IKEA ingredients? I mean, here in Greece, a 1kg(2lbs) bag of frozen meatballs from IKEA cost about 10euros, get some pasta of choice plus a ready made sauce and its a set. I think that most things will be cheaper in the States.
If I ever wanted to eat meatballs with pasta I'd probably go with a tomato based sauce instead of sour cream... Then again I can see how a sour cream based sauce would work as well. The secret is in the spices as usual. I really love the traditional Swedish sauce with nutmeg though, nutmeg isn't used in enough dishes as it is, absolutely wonderful spice, it just makes things taste more warm and filling.
I make Swedish meatballs from scratch using Chef Niklas Ekstedt's recipe. They do take some time but aren't actually difficult, and are way better than any pre-made ones.
I use the recipe from the TH-cam channel “ThatDudeCanCook.” Those are still considered the best thing I’ve ever made by the rest of my family, but it took me a good 3 hours the first time.
Certainly home made is by far better. I make Danish meatballs (which are Swedish meatballs made in Denmark), or Norwegian meatballs (which are Swedish meatballs made in Norway), or Dutch meatballs (which are Swedish meatballs made in Holland. But, as good as homemade are, I'm 90 so I appreciate how easy and fairly good the Stouffer's Swedish meatballs are. Just not big enough.
@@larsord9139 Gotcha, so I guess I actually make Canadian Swedish-style meatballs ;-) Interestingly, there is a French Canadian dish using a similar combination of either wild or domestic meats, and spices called tourtiere. it a american/bastardized version of köttbullar that often serve on pasta with a orange sour cream sauce. In the video most frozen food manufacturer opted for some kind of cream sauce instead. The freshly cooked version isn't bad, it just isn't köttbullar
Less tasty than Italian meatballs and they are not served in tomato sauce. No Swedish person eats meatballs with noodles or pasta. You must have mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam as a side.

The best swedish meatballs were made by Atkins as part of their frozen meals line. There was a LOT of them in the dish and because it was supposed to be fatty it had tons of flavor. Sadly they have been discotinued.
I've tried I think all the more expensive Swedish Meatballs box dinners my local Safeway sells over the years, always when they were on good discount sales. But guess which one I always go back to? None of them, If I'm getting TVP, I'll just go cheap and get Banquet, the noodles are decent too. It's actually the only cheap BQ box dinner I like enough to regularly purchase. I like the lean cuisine Swedish meatballs. They regularly go on sale near me for $10 for 5! Plus they are clearly the healthiest choice. Can't beat a $2 lunch! I add a good amount of pepper on mine though, it really helps.
The Lean Cuisine is the only one I haven't tried. The others are all good, considering their ingredients. Not fair to compare such processed meals to home-cooked. 😊
Yup, just like shepherd's pie is supposed to be served with lamb, but in America, it's served with ground beef, which is actually called a cottage pie, not a shepherd's pie which I tried to explain to my mother and she nearly disowned me the boomer generation is funny like that😂

Being from Sweden my first question is just "why pasta?" I mean, if you get meatballs over here they are going to be accompanied by either mashed potatoes or boiled potatoes, meatballs with pasta is less "Swedish" and closer to the original homeland of both meatballs and Mac and Cheese: Italy.
