Randall Thompson's "Alleluia" is unique among the settings of this text because its mood, contrary to expectation, is not joyful. It was premiered on July 8, 1940. Thompson explained its unusual nature somewhat later, noting that the fall of France to the Nazis just weeks before he wrote the work had dampened his spirits:
"The music in my particular Alleluia cannot be made to sound joyous…here it is comparable to the Book of Job, where it is written, 'The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.'"
I sang this in high school, a long, long time ago. Brought back memories. Great rendition with masks and all. Nice that they had the drive and creativity to perform that way.

this is a beautiful song, In 2007 I was a member of the Columbia Choral Society and we sang this in a cathedral in Germany, on a tour to Europe, the sound of this music echoed through the Hugh columns and it is something I will always remember, Music for the soul. Europe is absolutely beautiful when you see how history has been preserved, in this country most older buildings are bulldozed and replaced with metal and plastic.
This rendition is simply gorgeous, and the context certainly not lost on this Singers alum. Sopranos placement and vowels marvelous. I'm so impressed that you all were able to convey such subtlety and musicianship while wearing masks, showing so much love and caring for your fellow Singers. Makes me very proud.
