Personally I think that's what most country's fear. Of course the big military spending and training plays a part. But you can't buy that kind of bravery. That man cared so much about his brothers that he abandoned any chance of surviving to give another man a chance at survival. War is terrible but men like this make something so bad so damn beautiful.

You should read "Alone at Dawn". It clears up a few things. This video was part 2 of the mission. The first part is when Neal Roberts fell out of the back of the helo as it was hit, attempting to land. The helo was so shot up, the pilot had to return to the base. Chapman and the SEALs agreed to return to rescue Roberts, so they weren't going back to retrieve his body or sensitive equipment. In the words of the team leader, they were going back, "to rescue Roberts and kill everyone on the mountain." Unfortunately, by the time they returned, Roberts had been killed and the enemy fighters were waiting for them. The SEALs believed Chapman was dead, so they withdrew. Unfortunately, the ensuing coverup engaged in by SEAL leadership makes them look bad. Even Chapman's widow doesn't blame the SEALs for leaving under these circumstances.

Some of the stories from the most recent are harsh and just the burden they carry on their shoulders because of their owns feeling on the award, one soldier felt it was underserved because there were several men there who did more than their part.

But even among these elite men there are those, when in the middle of the absolute worst of it, somehow find within themselves the determination to rise even higher. There was one British SAS soldier suggested to be given the US Medal Of Honor due to his heroic intervention at an Afghanistan fort where hundreds of prisoners successfully overthrew their captors(which included CIA officer Spann, Spann's CIA partner survived) but it was rejected because traditionally only Americans can receive it. Usually in that case a secret commendation is given.

It's too long to react to, but I think you guys would like to watch the Jocko podcast with Dakota Meyers, a US Marine that refused orders to stay out of a battle and took a humvee in to support his guys and rescue as many as he could after the force he was attached to ran into a heavy ambush.
He did it because he promised his guys he would if things got hot. Since he went in against orders during war, his only reasonable expectations were to die in the attempt or be arrested, courts martialed and sentenced to years in prison if he didn't die.
But, he gave his word to his guys so in he went, damn the consequences.

It took me a whole day to watch that. I had to stop several times because of the emotions it brought up. There was pride in Dakota, rage at his commanders, and tears for his fallen brothers. Easily the most powerful thing I've ever seen on youtube.

I’m proud to be an American. This man was an actual superhero. 99.9% of the people on the planet wouldn’t have done that. I can’t stand when people in my own country bash our hero’s. I want to give them the gun and drop them off in a war zone and tell them to go for it. People like him are why we have the freedoms that we have.

Often times in the interviews with the Medal of Honor holders and even other accolades, they don't think they did anything special. They are really humble saying it's just their job. They take the medal not for themselves but in memory of the men who didnt survive. A really good quote is from Major Dick Winters from Easy Company. His grandson asked him if he was a hero. He replied with "No I am not a hero. But I served with a company full of them."

I really enjoy your reactions... as well as the video choices.
I think it is really important for people to see videos like this. Especially in a time like this where everyone is so divided. I feel that so many people have no idea how blessed we are to have won the lottery of life by being born in America or the UK.
It’s taken for granted and not appreciated. Heroes like Mr. Chapman and so many other warfighters we’ll never know, make it possible for us to have the freedoms we enjoy.
So thanks for reacting to this video.
Also, a good video for you all to react to would be the training and selection for the Air Forces special operations regiment which is Combat Controller (John Chapman was one), PJ’s Pararescue Jumper, as well as a couple other ones like, weatherman and one more I believe.
It is unbelievably difficult where 90% wash out... and these candidates are all already in the military for 3 or 4 years.... and it still graduates just 1 of 10 candidates.
    Cheers! Keep it up!

Thanks for the reaction guys. From what I've gleaned I don't think the UK feels the level of patriotism that we do in the US. Stories like this are part of the reason we honor our country and the people who fight for it.

    • @jalspach9215
      @jalspach9215 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Search some Victoria Cross stories, you've missed the mark. Brits aren't less patriotic. Their general mindset/style is quite low-key by comparison. Like their wry & dry sense of humor. You probably wouldn't get it. Your distinctly insular American perspective is exactly what some of my former SAS friends repeatedly bring up. It's trite & bombastic. I fully respect your patriotism but not your assumption we've cornered the market on it.

I’ve done some crazy shit, working on helicopters in Iraq and Afghanistan as a marine, easily coulda been killed/maimed as a result, but no where near him, only hope I hold up and do the right thing as he did, even though I believe I would.
