  • In 1942, the site that is now the Campus Saint-Jean, University of Alberta, was a private Catholic boy's school. The grotto was built using stones from the Mill Creek Ravine. The effort was headed by Saint-Jean Brother Anthony Kowalczyk. The grotto itself is situated between Pavillon Lacerte, Residence Saint-Jean, and the Community Garden on the University of Alberta Campus Saint-Jean in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
    According to the plaque:
"This Grotto was erected in 1944-45 by the servant of God Brother Anthony Kowalczyk, OMI as a testimony of love and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary whom he so often addressed with the following words: 'Mary, my good mother, excuse me if I bother you again.' Born in Poland in 1866, Brother Anthony died in Edmonton on July 10, 1947, after having dedicated himself during 36 years at College Saint-Jean.
