It’s one of the few dubbed roles, as a guy who prefers watching anime dubbed, that really feels like it could’ve totally been his role originally. Few others I feel that way about is Spike from Cowboy Bebop, Kenshin in Rurouni Kenshin, and some characters from Tenchi. It’s great when dubbed performances can feel like that.
lowkey, YYH is better than DBZ and HxH. Power scaling was phenomenal up to the very end. Deep story, the chapter when he fought Sensui blew my mind. A philosophy that had me pondering about the good of humans, if there is truly any. God Tier anime.
@@PS5Akatsuki YYH had fantastic pacing and kept most of the characters relevant throughout the entire story. This along with the many other anime we got growing up in the 90's and early 2000's were simply sublime. Shout Out Justin Cook for the brilliant performance!
Yes it is. I'm 23 and I JUST finished the show not long ago. Easy 9.5 or 10. Hunterxhunter I had a few meh things with but yu yu was nonstop hilarious and well paced and enjoyable.
Yusuke just spoke to us. He would curse, didn't really care about anybody, he was tough and just seeing him grow and the story telling is just so raw and emotional it still makes me cry to this day watching clips and old episodes. Greatest Anime of all time. Definitely my favorite anime no contest
I wouldn’t necessarily say he didn’t care about anybody , it was kind of an ongoing progression of him realizing who/what he was fighting for, like him dying in the first episode for the kid , maybe an instinctive action…but Hiei and him usually hid their feelings until a drastic moment lol
@@buddhamayne agreed. Yusuke always cared about something and someone he just didn't wear his heart on his sleeve most of the time because of his cynical delinquent attitude.
YYH is just perfect. Perfect lenght, perfect cast, perfect setting, perfect adaptation, perfect OST, perfect antagonists, etc. It's a timeless classic that became the Bible for modern battle series as a whole, to the point that creating an exorcist/demon series is a rite of passage for many new authors.
Not so perfect length. The creator togashi was struggling with a lot and admits to rushing through the end of the black tape and the entire demon world arch. It's really unfortunate what happened to him. Look into it
I'm not upset at how the Demon World Arch played out. A tournament was a good way to end it. It kept its pace. It's my favorite anime of all time still
Exactly. They are Humanity catching Lightning in a Bottle. We ain’t gonna get lucky again if we try to remake it (as much as we all would like a HxH 2011 style update to it). They are too Perfect to remake.
I just meet Justin this Past week ; he is definitely a down to earth person . I love how he treated each of us . He is definitely a friendly, charismatic and energetic person. Yusuke will always be a GOAT !!
What a legend. I feel so lucky to have discovered YYH twenty-ish years ago on Toonami. I still rewatch it now and it's still amazing. Justin's performance is a huge part of that.
Damn I think the reason why it’s so greatly appreciated still is because how the characters all go well together throughout the development of each phase of situations they go through. Justin Cook really did nail the voice of being an arrogant yet badass street punk kid who had to learn to mature and grow stronger with every new threat he faced throughout the story. Same goes for all of the other characters VAs. They really delivered true passion into their characters that it felt so raw and real, which to an extent probably was while they were in the recording booth reenacting the scenes they were given all while voicing the characters
I put my money that the hardest line Cook had to say was when Yusuke went to save Puu in that cave and yelled "SCREW THIS TEST I'M GETTING US OUT OF HERE!!!" And that INTENSE scream as the spirit orb is absorbed within him is the most intense scene in animation history.
Just wish I could buy the anniversary set. Got the money just need it available. That aside, Justin Cook to this day is one of my favorites, it would not be YuYu and I would not love Yusuke a much as I do if not for his performance. I still wonder why he hasn’t gone for more protagonists, but I guess he’s more so on the behind the scenes aspect these days. I know he’s a big part of how we started getting dubs done much sooner. Dude’s dope
I first watched it in Animax . I watched the Funimation dub in TH-cam it was a class apart. Justin Cook and Chuck Huber 's voices will be etched in my memory throughout my life
One of the all time greatest performances for a dub or just any voice actor, honestly the whole cast was on point and you can tell they gave it everything they had for this show.
I had the chance to meet Mr Cook at a con and he is such a nice, pleasant guy. I love when a VAs normal everyday speaking voice is one or more characters they're know for. That being said, YYH stands the test of time even 30+ years later and as someone who's love for this series stems all the way back to its original US airdate in 2002 I hope people young and old alike will continue to give this work of art the love and recognition it still deserves for ages to come.
Justin’s performance as Yusuke remains one of my favorite performances in anime in general. A lot of credit to the writing and direction, but the It factor was him.
This show will always mean a lot to me, and to see how down to earth and aware of how the show has maintained its quality beyond the fights and the humor makes me love Justin all the more. Can't wait to hear the crew together one last time when the OVA dubs drop!
My only gripe all the years was the stress that Yoshihiro Togashi endured creating YYH. Hate that we’ll never see where things would’ve gone but grateful for the product we have!!!
at the same time we have to appreciate it doesn't feel dragged out or to short, it feels just right. I do wish it went on longer as well, but also it could of possibly been waay longer or felt possibly forced cause of Togashi's health conditions
yu yu hakusho will always have a special place in my heart. i was spending the night at my grandparents house and i felt so lucky because i was allowed to stay up late watching TV in the living room. It was super late, maybe 12-1am, and suddenly a anime came on that ive never seen before , it was yu yu hakusho. i was instantly mesmerized and hooked , it was like a ghost wandered in through the window and put on a show for me i was transfixed. the energy and animation style was so different from what i normally watched at the time i couldnt believe such a show even existed. i begged for the dvd box sets for christmas and probably watched them through a dozen times.
Justin the goat i said it Sean and Chris good but nothing tops yuyu dark tournament arc he portrayed so much emotion yusuke I cried man in that one scene you know which one he cried I cried. 👏😌
Easily still has the best characterization around, where characters are relatable, the steaks are high and you care about them as they care for each other! Also Smile Bomb is still a killer beat!!!
Own the whole series on BluRay and still watch it regularly. Justin's performance as Yusuke has a lot to do with its longevity; to this day my favorite VO performance ever recorded.

Great story troubled kid every adult looks down on thinks he won’t amount to anything. Deep down heart of gold. Becomes the hero proves everyone wrong about him over and over.
Really nice interview I always wanted to meet his voice actor and the others for years now me and my brothers would come home and watch on toonami after school
Justin Cook gave one of the best matched voice dubs ever! It doesn't even sound like a dub, it's like Yusuke was made around his performance!

Chuck once said in a commentary for episode 112 that Justin basically cast himself for the role of Yusuke.
You can still hear yusukes voice coming out when he's just talking normal .. love it
Favorite line from Yusuke in the dub: “Yo! Earth to toddler bitch!”

YYH being a staple in Anime & Shonen history goes without saying. But I feel like it's MASSIVELY underrated among modern anime fans.
Oh definitely. It gets undershined by Hunter X Hunter mainly
Because Togashi's second major work is more popular, even though I think Yu Yu Hakusho is genuinely better than H×H.

The golden standard of English dub for anime. Everything fit so well
