Yu Yu Hakusho is among my most favorite of animes. One that I feel ended perfectly, never over staying it's welcome, but not leaving you wanting more. So hearing that they took special care to the bluray release just makes it feel so nice.
The ending was rushed, Togashi was having problems and you can tell it was. I wish they time skipped and made a Demon World Arc. It could’ve went on many more episodes.
It is also one of my favorite animes but I disagree with you about how it ended perfectly..... Like in terms of the overall length of the series it didn't go on obnoxiously long, sure. But the last arc itself was extremely rushed!!!!!
Thank god Funimation got the localization license for this and not 4Kids... imagine this masterpiece being handled by them is a thought that depresses me. While One Piece and DBZ were able to recover from subpar original dubs, Yu yu hakasho's English voice acting is so specific and iconic that if it didn't happen the exact way it did, it never would have made it to the great heights it did in any other scenario
Hi, Filipino here. Yep, we never even knew they had Japanese names until Internet access became widespread here. Also, notice the "Denise/Dennis" distinction under Kurama? Well, the translators thought he was a girl until a season or two in 😂
Interesting. It's neat to see how much can change over such a brief period of time. You can easily spot during the Suzuki/Suzuka line how much more refined their voice work got.
The Filipino dub was hilarious in that they casted Genkai(Master Jeremaiah) with a male voice. Things got awkward in the Dark Tournament when it was implied that Genkai was in a relationship with Toguro, not to mention how she would revert to her younger self. For the longest time I thought Genkais power allowed her to change her sex
The dub is essentially perfect, I love it. Although he's my favorite character, and I love impersonating him, Kuwabara's the only voice that doesn't really fit. But GOD do I love him. No homo. (ok maybe a little)
(I know this is a year late for a reply but I'm gonna reply anyways cause I has an opinion here so i'mma share)... Personally, I disagree with Kuwabara's voice not fitting... His character isn't particularly smart like kurama and makes a lot of his choices based on a 'code of honour'... So his voice suits really well, in my mind... Wouldn't change it at all (though, I could say exactly the same for everyone else in the anime SERIES.... The only time I didn't like the voices for anything yyh related was that wretched poltergeist report movie.... I watched that piece of junk twice... And i regretted it both times.)
@@courtharby You're correct. Kuwabara was intended to be a Krillin style character who winds up the butt of many jokes. Part of the humor of his casting in Japanese is that he is a *middle school student* with a fully-grown Yakuza voice. That doesn't translate or localize well, as the humor is obvious in Japanese because he's supposed to be young and his voice is super serious while he's constantly the butt of jokes and loves kittens, but we don't have a proper correlation for that in English, so Sabat's take on Kuwabara fits his character much better for American audiences. The only other thing I think they could have done would have been made Kuwabara talk like an Italian mobster. That's the closest I can think of, but I honestly think Sabat did his job perfectly.
@@ExImperialDragon I mean... Aside from the accent I think the quirks of an Italian mobster would fit kuwabara fairly well... And on that note, yyh x khr 😂
Very memorable and funny lines like "The family jewels have not been stolen" "Id like to remove your head from your ass, but I don't see that happening anytime soon"
Thank GOD Funimation took over and the voice actors we know and love took over. Whew. This show, Inuyasha and Cowboy Bepop is pretty much the only English dub I'll fully support.
Such a great Anime series, love it! :) I can't wait for FUNimation to dub the upcoming ova's for this laster next year. To maybe...just maybe re-dubbing the second movie as well. I hope. So awesome!!!
Unfortunate... both original dubs sound much better. Still, that was interesting to learn about the actors vying for each other's roles! I can't picture that, they're all so perfectly suited. And Justin Cook deserves SO many props for the thought and work he put in. Thanks for the vid!
YES!! It felt like 1/4 of Filler Demons were voiced by him. I love how so many VAs from DBZ were in the show. For Example, in Episode 1 some random kid is Voiced by The Supreme Kai.
Nice job on the vid, Kirb. Glad to see the NYC dub for the movie getting some love. BTW, what do you think of the rumor of Dan Green going under the James Stanley alias for Hiei? I don't believe it myself, but I would like your take on it.
Experiencing the Filipino Dub as a child It's actually pretty well done. All sound natural. The animax dub is also decent The only thing that surprised me is that I didn't know back then that the Philippine version had their names changed. It's actually pretty awesome.
Christopher Niosi I recall some kid buying bootleg DVDs of the series dubbed in Tagalog before. It could be that these sellers would know where they can get you a copy...
My favorite English Dub of all time. I'm no expert though(mostly watch English subbed);I like the original English version so much I haven't watched the movies because I'm too attached to the original voices. It just doesn't feel right to hear it any other way.
The yyh movie that isn't poltergeist report has the original dub cast, if i remember right? It's the only good movie I've seen for yyh. Poltergeist report made me cringe hard... If you wanna know what happens, Bennett the sage has an anime abandon episode on it... Save your time, watch that video instead of the movie... Too much KuwaHara... Not enough KuwaBara...
This is my favorite anime of all time because Yusuke is such a relatable protagonist and seeing his character development motivates to chase my dreams of making it in show business!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Chris, thanks a bunch, I just learned that David Hayter voiced Tamahome in Fushigi Yuugi and I've made a spiritual connection with Hideo Kojima. Good luck in life, you are clarity manifest. Thank you.
Technically Kojima didn't cast Hayter, he had no bearing or involvement with the English dub of MGS. The dub director even said that they never listened to Kojima's recording before casting.
As an ADR director, you have a vision for how a character should sound based on their personality and design and the script. Then you relay that direction to an actor, the closer they are to realizing that affect and being able to give the performance you want for that character, the more suited to the job they are. Can you imagine Sabat's booming voice coming out of Yusuke instead of someone like Kuwabara if all the actors got their first pick?
Hey Christopher, I just realized something with Koenma's voice in the "Yu Yu Hakusho: Bonds of Fire" movie, Eric Stuart sounded like he used a calmer version of his Seto Kaiba voice in "Yu-Gi-Oh!"
It has been dubbed in Filipino for a long time. Hell, it came out in the 90s, in its original airing. Seriously, ask Filipinos who grew up in that decade and they'll tell you everything.
Whatever is keeping Funimation from redubbing poltergeist report, it must be really bad if it’s been withheld for so long. I don’t suppose you have any insight into that?
I think it's because they don't have the rights to it. It may be that Central Park Media eventually liquidated its assets but I'm not 100% sure. It would be nice if it eventually did get a proper dub but given how long it's been I personally am not holding my breath. On the flip side of that Funimation is dubbing Two Shots and All Or Nothing, the 2 OVAs from 2018. Only other thing that doesn't have an official dub is the picture drama (which isn't actually an animation, since it's using audio I believe from a drama CD?)
Justin Cook was only 19 when he worked on this show. That always manages to impress me.
Yu Yu Hakusho is among my most favorite of animes. One that I feel ended perfectly, never over staying it's welcome, but not leaving you wanting more. So hearing that they took special care to the bluray release just makes it feel so nice.

OMG!! That would have been horrible.
It would probably be the next shaman king even though this came first.
If you prefer Kai to original Dub, your opinion doesn’t matter 😂
Did you know? It's surprising that Chris Sabat can still talk after voicing Kuwabara
Props to Justin for the George/Narrator connection.
The narrator who is talking is not Justin Cook, it's Nick Landis aka Lanipator....He voiced Yusuke Urameshi in Yu Yu Hakusho abridged
Unless you were referring to the Narrator who was also George the ogre in YYH
Best plot twist ever
@@JadenYukifan28
The guy talking is definitely not Lanipator
one of the greatest dubs IMO.
Oh yeaaaaaaa!~
This is the greatest dub.
Never watched the dub version, but I'm glad it had heart behind it that still makes it a classic to this day.
hands down one of the best english dubs
Kurama is voiced by David Hayter. It is now confirmed that Solid Snake is Kurama
A snake and a fox don't make a good pair.... Most of the time.
Kurama = Fox
Solid Snake = cloned from Big Boss who worked for FOX
YES! Thanks for this!!
Geekdom101 Hi Geekdom.
Geekdom101 You should make a video on yyh.
Geekdom101 hey
Sup Geekdom101
Man that 4th wall break at the end of the series is the best
Their names in the Filipino dub are all so dorky and I can't stop laughing
Alfred is best character
Nah man *Dennis gang for life*
They called HIEI...VINCENT!
I love Eu Eu Hakusho
Hi, Filipino here. Yep, we never even knew they had Japanese names until Internet access became widespread here.
Also, notice the "Denise/Dennis" distinction under Kurama? Well, the translators thought he was a girl until a season or two in 😂
Yass because they used common filipino names.
Also Veronica Taylor, the original voice of Ash Ketchum, played Botan and Yukina in Yu Yu Hakusho The Movie: Poltergeist Report.
Interesting. It's neat to see how much can change over such a brief period of time. You can easily spot during the Suzuki/Suzuka line how much more refined their voice work got.
I prefer the old dub more ...and suzuka fits better imo then the og name but whatever to each their own
Jerry Jewell sounded so much more menacing in that Hiei flashback
I always liked the way the narrator said "koenma-sama" In the episode reviews and finding out Jorge was the narrator made me so happy
The Filipino dub was hilarious in that they casted Genkai(Master Jeremaiah) with a male voice. Things got awkward in the Dark Tournament when it was implied that Genkai was in a relationship with Toguro, not to mention how she would revert to her younger self. Wtf that's some sailor moon 4kids one piece shit right there ...in surprised you enjoyed the series ..shit like that ruins seires for me
Lmfao
So the Fil Dub basically made Younger Toguro gay
Yes, they have the same VA as Yusuke (Eugene) 🤭. Even when they changed Yusuke's VA they still have the same VA a guy.
Well the real problem is they assumed a master fighter was male lol.
The dub is essentially perfect, I love it. Although he's my favorite character, and I love impersonating him, Kuwabara's the only voice that doesn't really fit. But GOD do I love him. No homo.

Kurama? Kurama!? KURRRRAAAAMAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
GAME OVER
Yeah, I grew up knowing 'Yu Yu Hakusho' as 'Ghost Fighter'. I only found out about the original, like, five years ago. It's now on my PTW list.
Very memorable and funny lines like "The family jewels have not been stolen" "Id like to remove your head from your ass, but I don't see that happening anytime soon"
Does anybody else remember this coming on Adult Swim before airing on Toonami?
I was curious if you were going to mention the joke about George and the narrator. Thank you for not disappointing. ;) Great episode of DYKVA!
Yusuke was voiced by Chris from Garzey's Wing in Poltergeist Report...
"THIS SPIRIT GUN IS INCREDABLY DULL!"
PokeDude011 I don't get it.
The Crossover Combatant look up the English dub of Garzey's Wing. It's comedy gold.
It's historically the most notoriously bad anime dub ever.
That dub is the reason why i haven't watched it yet. Funimation needs to dub
Eric Stuart will always be either James or Kaiba....there is nobody else.
And gourry
God, I love this anime. And this dub is truly one of the highest quality.
You're telling me that that the dude who voiced Snake from the metal gear franchise voiced Kurama? Now thats just amazing
Just in that one movie!
Christopher Niosi
Awesome. Also holy shit Kirbopher just replied to my message this is amazing
Since I live in Southeast Asia I'm used to the Animax Dub but sadly it's hard to find episodes with the Animax Dub in the internet.
All my love for Yu Yu Hakusho.
David Hayter voiced Snake in Metal Gear Solid.

How coincident. I started watching this again the other day. Cool to find out about their VA's. Good work Kirb. :)
I really hope Justin Cook revises his role as Yusuke in any remake or reboot. Well, the entire original cast tbph. 😅
What the FUCK is that Romantic remix in the background?
Such a beautiful anime
Unfortunate... both original dubs sound much better.
Still, that was interesting to learn about the actors vying for each other's roles! I can't picture that, they're all so perfectly suited. And Justin Cook deserves SO many props for the thought and work he put in. Thanks for the vid!
Wish Justin cook could possibly get Slam Dunk done, that would be amazing in my opinion
Very awesome!!! Thank you guys!!!
I remember all the voice actors were using the same voice actor. The same actor they used for Ginyu in DBZ 😂😂😂

YYH My favorite anime of all time I wish they would continue it just like they did with DBZ to DBS
1:42
That's normal for Japan, kids are always always voiced by females and sometimes pretty boys are as well.
Fantastic video bro! YYH is my favorite anime, and I'm glad you got around to make this :)
woo! my favorite show ever! Love the video Kerb!

Whoa he watched the whole series beforehand??? Crazy commitment
Still my favorite series.
Definitely still one of my favorite animes growing up! Love the opening theme song. ^_^
My hairs stood up when I heard the voice of Brock from Pokemon speaking lines for Yu Yu Hakusho.
The beautiful Suzuka should have been voiced by David Bowie...
fascinating info for YuYu Hakusho voce acting !
ohhh omg the blue ogre is the narrator. that matches the 'the other world ain't watching for nothing' tagline in the epidoes previews
That music....

Bleach ripped off a few parts lol
Especially the Fullbring arc and the character of Ginjo being similar to the Chapter Black saga and Sensui.
BattlefieldJoe97 Yeah it was a bootleg version of chapter black. with all the interesting stuff taken out.
Bleach was first denied because it was too similar to Yu Yu Hakusho
This is one of the few animes I watch in English and the script is amazing and the English version just has more personality in my opinion.
They all voiced DBZ characters too, how ironic
