Lyrics:
I must admit I felt the flame
Kurt Cobain, a Fender Mustang
MTV brought me up
"This is your brain on drugs”
I won’t forget that first girlfriend
That got me into Boy II Men
I grew up a lot that year
My sweatshirt said, “No Fear”…ha
My life was a stereo and it was everything
First one in line for the Last Dance With Mary Jane
Hiding in my headphones, laying on the bedroom floor
1994
Tell mom, “see ya later, don’t be blowin’ up my pager
When the show’s over I’ll come home
When that is, I don’t know…”
Teen spirit in the air before we all owned cellphones
Study hall passing notes, yes, no or I don’t care
When my life was a stereo and it was everything
Soundtrack, first kiss out at the roller rink
Hands held, two hearts falling on a hardwood floor
1994
1994
Think you know it all when you don’t know any better
Tell yourself you’re gonna live forever
Fire’s burning and I’m still holding the torch from 1994
A year to be, hey...a year to be young
A year to be, hey...a year to be young
A year to be, hey...a year to be young
My life was a stereo and it was everything
Soundtrack takes me back through all those memories
Hiding in my headphones, laying on the bedroom floor
It takes me back to the days when a song was worth so much more

In 1994 I was 13. This song gave me a walk down memory lane hard. By 2004 I was 23 in Iraq. Now in 2024 I’m a 43 year old- old man. That 30 years went fast.

Feel you brothers😊 love from Denmark
Thank you for your service, welcome home
Thanks for your service. Yeah, difference of 1994 feeling and today had me shedding a tear.
Never trade it brother.🫡
This is a song you dont listen to.
This is a song you feel.
When you feel something with your ears it’s called hearing
Not when you have synesthesia.
Smart ass. 😊
and i spelled when-ehen so lets correcr that
Takes me back to a simpler better time!

Amen
Guy just snagged an entire geneartion in nostalgia ❤!
Absodamnlutely
That guitar Tone is TREMENDOUS
Agreed!
Think it's E flat drop d
That's what got me to stop. Now I'm hooked
Drop C always sounds good
Can anyone confirm the tuning? And is this nylon string?
You are like Springsteen if he was still young, hungry, and capable of writing good songs. You are really fucking good at what you do.
Then why do I hate Springsteen and love this guy
@@NoBody-hz4pooooooo sick burnnn brau
@@NoBody-hz4poyou can hate Springsteen, but that has nothing to do with them sounding similar. Which is true, they do.
Lol OK dude
Right on! I just discovered him . I’ve been waiting for someone like him ! What a writer and have you seen the video him walking down the road singing …Omg..
Hooked.
I finished high school in 1995, and the nostalgia this song brings is amazing. The mid 90s were truly the last awesome years of being young. There was something about going out with friends and being completely untethered from anything else. You could truly just be in those moments. No emails, no cell phones, no social media. I count myself blessed to have been a teenager in those years. Great song. 👍🏼
Modern days sucks. I wish I could go back in time
Class of 99. I feel it brother.
2002 here and still had the good simple childhood
I completely agree with this! I was born in 79… times have changed so much and I fear for my children that are 4 and 2. Hopefully time does repeat itself for their sake
'95 grad
Dude, I'm crying. On behalf of all Gen X, thank you ❤
Don't cry
I've got uncontrollable tears and I am not a person that cries
Us older Millennials also finds a lot of old emotions in this.
I thought Gen X did not cry lol 83' here
@@ALTERNATIVEROCKMAN 78 here. I guess I sprung a leak 🤷♀️
love that little Nirvana riff you worked in. Killer stuff, my man.
Dont think most recognized it, I knew instantly!
Yeah we did
Came to the comments just to see if anyone else noticed
Born in 83 and just recently turned 40 and I’ve never related to a song so much! I’m literally writing this with tears in my eyes! This is a beautiful song!
Same, my friend.... same.
I agree. And it also brought tears to my eyes. I was born in 81. About to be 43 next month. Ugh how time flies!!
78 and I'm 45, if only we could be young again for a day
83 as well. This song just hits home!
1982. Sitting here making ugly faces trying not to cry.
Born 75 grad 94 turn 49 this sept. Noone can understand what we had unless u lived it memories are so good it hurls
It's impossible to explain to any other generation the experiences that shaped us, even the ones that bookend us on either side. Yet, I can talk to a gen X stranger, who's life experiences and trajectory were completely different, and we can still share common experiences like old friends. It's crazy.
@grimeybeast1465 we all talk about our own generations time as kids as if it was the definitive time to be young. I'm 31 in a couple weeks. I was born in 1993, so barely experienced the 90s. I still look back at the late 90s and 2000s the same way I hear 90s kids talk. I think the reality is we all just miss being the young, carefree kids we once were. Before joints on a Saturday night became sore joints, and a 5 dollar bill became a 300 dollar utility bill.
Absolutely 💯
This may be one of my favorite songs ever written.
I haven't had something grab me like this in a long time😢
Right, it’s amazing
Words can’t explain how life changing this album has been for me. I had the pleasure of meeting Stephen at Faster Horses in Michigan recently (2024) and I stuttered my way through trying to explain that to him. He was humble and kind and shy. He has easily become my favorite artist of all time. Can’t wait to see what else he has in store. I’ll be listening to this album on repeat for a long, long time.
1994!! The year I graduated high school and left to serve my country in the NAVY. It is probably the best life decision I made as an 18 year old that could have traveled down the wrong road, especially without that decision. I think many were/still are shocked at where l've been, what l've experienced, and who l've become. To those that said I'd be nothing but trouble, Thank you. To those that cheered me on, THANK YOU! I truly don't think my parents knew how l'd turnout. They left it totally up to me. As a 48 year old man, I can say l've been blessed after all the life experiences I've had, especially being a father.❤
I went to the marines in the same year.
Thank sir for your service they wouldn't take me in 87 I was broken to pieces in car wrecks but I tried anyway thank you I was the same fckup but I tried would not let me in but thank you sir maybe in some way you did it for me that is why I ran across this God bless you
Born 75. Grad 94 turn 49 in Sept. We lived it brother. Memories are so good they hurt
My god i was 12 in 94 and and my stereo was my life this song just absolutely spoke to my soul......keep this stuff coming brother
Absolutely the same! I was 12 in 94. I miss the 90s beyond imagination. My family was young and alive.
I was 31 and it spoke to mine, too. Great song!
I know man, one of the most nostalgic songs I've ever heard.
I was 13. And my headphones and Walkman/stereo were my life also! Nirvana was also life. Man this song takes me way back when life was simple. Miss those days.
I was 16 and so was my life plus sports. My life is still the Stereo
This song rattles the 90's right out of me 😮 hit me like a truck
Same
I dont know about you guys but that tone he is getting outta that acoustic, is blended perfectly with his voice. Freaking awesome JR.
Takes me back to the days when a song was worth so much more…. Holy shit. You just made a grown man tear up. And I ain’t did that since my grandfather died. Absolutely beautiful man. Wow.
God damn it’s rare you hear something like this, a song that perfectly tells a different story to every person, and gets better the more you hear it.
I'm born 1980. This is my song
Ditto
Same here. We lived this Dustin. We lived this
Same here!
The last years of gen X what a great time to live.
Born in 79 graduated 98 this song is literally my childhood
Right!
WOW, that voice is so powerful 😮
GREAT SONG, god I miss the 90’s
Same
One of the best songs I’ve ever heard . Absolutely beautiful.
Sliding the little All Apologies riff from Unplugged really added what this song was missing. That is if you can possibly argue it was missing anything. Pure magic man
wish he had kept that in the spotify version man!
To be 19 again. Thanks for the trip back to 94.
This dude is the product of one crazy night when Chris Cornell and Bruce Springsteen got to know each other in the carnal sense.
💗
Done played this song 10 times and still hits the same very talented bro!
Same here. Have had it on repeat.
This song means so much me. I graduated in 93… the mystical sounds of this song resonate through my core!
The album and acoustic album version are great but I need THIS version to download!
I was a junior in high school in 1994. This song hit so hard it physically knocked the tears out of me. A grown man crying, flooded with memories of being young in one of the best times to be alive. Who knew. I miss that time so bad. What I would give to go back when life was about great music, first loves, and having fun. Maybe not always the easiest times for me but some of the best memories.
U said it perfect
What a song. The way it pays tribute to the Nirvana sound without feeling like a ripoff is both perplexing and captivating. The more I listen, the deeper it gets. Hell of a song.
I turned 19 in 94,Shit man this made every hair on my body stand up 😮🔥
Brings me to tears man, sometimes I forget how good our lives were
The tone of the distorted acoustic and his voice is almost a religious experience.. amazing
I have been listening to this non stop for awhile. My son sings it around the house. Maybe some day he will remember the current year through a song where his son sings about 2024 around the house. This one gives me chicken skin. Boys 2 men. No Fear. It feels like the dude is singing about my life back then. That is what makes music great. It connects you to a person, place, or time.
Born in 83 here as well. But I'm from Finland. Stone cold Scandinavia. We lived on Grunge and we grew up on everything this song refers to. I hate nostalgia but this brought tears to my eyes. I'll do my best to make sure all the Finns hear this. It's a masterpiece!
Give them this boys truth
Hauntingly beautiful and nostalgic. A masterpiece in songwriting and performance.
🤚Who else is here because you heard him on Stephen Colbert. I would have never heard this song if it wasn't for that show. I've been going through his songs and find them so relatable. I'm a black lady from Detroit and hip-hop is usually my wheelhouse but this dude is country and he's speaking to me more than any rap songs I've heard in a decade. Yeah I'm buying all these songs.
Love this
From Belfast, Northern Ireland- I was born in 1965, but this song still resonates with me. Incredible vocal, too. You have left me hungry for more. Thank you!!!
I was 14 in 94 can relate to the accuracy of this song, loved that lil nostalgic brief intro
Best shit I’ve heard in more than a decade
I’m not the type of person who posts comments I my mind own. The beginning acoustics had my ears perked up and by the end of it all I was an emotional mess. Love the Nirvana riffs in the intro and outro. This song gets you in the feels for sure.I need this version on Spotify please make it happen 😂
I believe it already is on spotify, look for year to be young acoustic
@@DroneShotFPVthe acoustic is on there but not this version with the Nirvana riffs in the into and outro.
🙌🏼👍
I was 10th Grade in 94....this sound means so much to me.
I heard this song for the first time on jools Holland in the UK a couple of weeks ago and I had never heard Stephen before either but he absolutely blew my mind with this song, being almost 54 I reminisce alot about those times and this song brought flood's of memories back to me and elevated me to a place in time when I felt indestructible and I was full of life, thanks Steve for making a sad old man happy again!.
Ok. The song hits hard. Grad '97. Lived my life on my bedroom floor with big cabinet speakers on either side of my head, liner notes in my hand...
That's cool and all but can we talk about that guitar tone? DANG.
I mean this as the best compliment. If Chris Cornell would have sang country, this is similar to what I think it would have sounded like. I love your guitar playing and song writing. Truly unique and incredible. You have gained a huge fan my friend. Please continue to write, play and sing more! This whole album is absolutely worth a listen over and over again. Killer dude! Keep it up.
So much truth and so spot on to my childhood need more songs like this!!!!!
When a song reminds you of what you had, what you lost, what thought would be and what actually is, all at once. How can a song fill me with such joy and sadness at the same time? I will have to listen 30 more times to figure it out.
Blows my mind how many heart strings this song hits for me. Amazing song.
What a great song! Graduated 94 , we truly lived in a time when music meant so much to us. It's part of our soul. You captured the passion and inspired the flame again in me. Tears and Smiles my friend . Thank you. I feel you.
Born in 94, I always say how grateful I am to have been given the opportunity to experience the world before it all REALLY went to shit. Love this Steve. Keep going, it's your time.
It was shit before, and shit after. You do you
@@SmashedTater Depends on your perspective of shit, I'd take the 90s over the roarin 20s any day.
As a 44 year old man now whose high school freshman year was 1994 this song hits every part of my soul. All I ever listened to was Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Sound Garden, etc. Glad my 22 year old daughter likes to jam those tunes with me now. Stephen Wilson Jr will be a legend in the music industry soon. Killer voice, sound and vibe. I’ll be seeing him live soon.
Senior in high school in 94. Great times.
1994 first born daughter was 2......54 year OG now and man that tune puts a fire in my belly! Good stuff!
My family moved alot when I was younger, in 94’ I was 15. My way to escape was to load the walkman and just fade away listening to anything from Pearl Jam to the Doors to just forget about things. The fact that I was awkward, couldn’t make friends because we would be gone in 8-12 months, music healed. Still does. This song gives me chills. Thanks 🤘🏻🤙🏻
"First kiss at the roller rink" had me😊
Makes me nostalgic for the 1990s, which I didn't think was possible under any circumstances whatsoever.
Same actually. Would never think in 1994 that I would be missing this year.
This song hits. You can feel him putting his soul into it!!Hoping the best for this guy!!
this guy just wrote and sung my entire heart. holy shit.
The 90s was my prime time , middle school, high school and everything you sing about .....I love this song
He's got something really special right there. Thank you for Reminding me of my youth. Class of '94..
Your songwriting is always on point, and your voice carries your message very well. Kudos to you sir 🙌
Just saw you supporting Joss Stone at the Albert Hall, absolutely amazing!
Born in 80. Felt every bit of this song. A lot of us here did. Here’s to us.
Same here dude, I was born in 1980...song is spot on!!
Great Energy, Powerful, Perfect lyrics, Instantly sucked in.
❤ This has been on repeat all day. Absolutely hits ya in the feels
Big time
This song is so much better stripped down like this solid gold brother
Ahhhhh. I just love it. My life was a stereo. Can we please go back?!?!?! I wanna go back.
Im begging every day
Saw this guy on Jools Holland show, blew me away, can't stop listening to his work absolutely top draw
NAILED IT! I felt it like 1994! Thank you for the feels man!
These acoustics are crazy good. Now you've got another album!
Man your voice is rich I love that song man I'm 45 years old can you take me back to 1994 it was a year to be young thank you Stephen!!!
Amazing song and artist. Hope the whole world gets to discover you
He's got 2 bangers back to back 🎉
Weird day to hear this. Great song tearing up at work.
This song RIPS, good job brother
Love this ❤ such memories. I use to go roller skating every Friday night in Jr high..The 90 s were great and the 80s too .The music was better.
Why have I never heard this song?! Wow! This had me spilling all kinds of emotions. ❤ Awesome!
94 were the times. Crazy fucking times. Your music came into my life at the right time. I just heard of you for the first time, a couple days ago.
Thank you so much for this. Music you can feel, is what this is. Unbelievable stuff brother!!
Respect from Northern Ontario, Canada 📿
1994 🤘🏼
I was 13 in 1994, this song is spot on...CBS Saturday Morning Sessions brought me here...my new favorite song
“….Hidin in my headphones on a bedroom floor… “ yep. That took me out. Absolutely beautiful from start to finish.
Amazing song, incredible performance. The guitar line gives a little bit of All Apologies, and a little bit of 1979. Love this.
Brother… you wrote our anthem!
Real, raw, rare, talent.
There are no words. The nostalgia is too much. But the line he said “when a song was so much more” nobody born in these last two nor the next generations will truly understand that statement
Damn... Great song.. and I'm a hip hop kid from 90'
Definitely what we were doing in 1994 exelent song to remember some of the best times In our lives
My top Spotify song for 2023 !! Enough said...
Was 14 in 94..song hits home..lol..put a nostalgic smile on my face..great song man.
Latest IG post came up in my feed and brought me here!
My whole day went sideways, I cant stop listening. Pre-ordered the LP, told all my friends and hoping for more FL tour dates✌🏻
❤ this song. 1994 was an amazing year for me. I turned 13. Life was a stereo. No Fear was the vibe. Super blessed to be alive in 94.
Congratulations, Absolutely incredible track, resonates with my soul.👍
Also you were amazing at the royal albert hall last night.
awesome, class of 96
Probably the 5th time I've watched this. Tremendous.
the man can write lyrics and music like no other, his original sound, his passion in his live performances, the story... Its the complete package man, I turned super fan in literally a weeks time
THE BEST SONG EVER RECORDED
I don’t know when it happened. But music just doesn’t hit as hard nowadays as it did back then. This song though, left me in tears and brought that back. Thank you 🙏
Wow it’s been some years since a song knocked me that way ❤
I was born in 69 but this is awesome the 90s were awesome
An absolutely amazing song. Captured a lot of emotions from my childhood. Thank you
