    Hi guys glad you made it to Goole, the structure as you enter Goole was a cason, which was basicaly a sliding gate to seal off the canal and would be winched across by hand using the windlasses if there was a breach in the system. The next structure is the updated cason.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fascinating! Thanks for that! There were also some gates which I guess have the same purpose.

      Sadly (perhaps?) that was a Monty Python deference... the line on Rocky and Bullwinkle was “And now for something we hope you’ll really like!”, usually interrupted by a moose doing something silly. For some reason a meme went about a few years ago with the “Moose und Swkirrel” under Cleese’s catchphrase. M

    Probably the easiest access to boating in a canyon is river Lot in France, around Cahors. The river is navigable by locks, and there are a couple hire boat vendors. Recommended.

    You really needed the full canal width when being overtaken (as we frequently were in early 70's) by commercial traffic, especially the trains of Tom Puddings. Counter rudder and engine power needed to avoid the suction....they didn't hang about and pleasure boating was virtually unknown on these waterways!
    Enjoy the run up to York & Ripon! Look forward to seeing how things have changed!

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would have loved to have seen the Tom Puddings on the move. Although being over taken by them doesn’t sound like much fun! Currently in York, heading to Ripon this week!

  • @gbzrope

    Looking forward to seeing how you get on upstram from Goole - we've never done that stretch, forthest we went was a cruise around the docks.. We have been on the Yorkshire Derwent - it is very pretty and very rural - and prone to flooding! A Lot! It's a shame they have closed Sutton Lock otherwise you could have got to Stamford Bridge, which is another nice stretch, and you would pass Jethro's boat, about 30 ft up the bank where it landed after a BIG flood neary 20 years ago! He lives(d) on it as a static caravan and has built steps down to the river where he uses a little motor boat. The Derwent is Wild Country, there are No Rules! No licence, no BSS, no insurance!

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would have loved to go further up the Derwent and see his boat... sounds like quite a sight. Sadly I think the Derwent beyond the junction with the Pocklington is already lost to us. M

    Great vlog, shame about the weather, but it's always like that in Goole 😂👍
    Still can't get over how close you've been to me, and I haven't been to say Hello 🍻
    If you need any local knowledge between there and York, I've spent my life up and down the rivers and canals in the area 👍
    Selby is fine, but a lot of boaters warn to be cautious of the tide is pushing you as you approach the bridge, I've seen a couple of boats start to drift in the currents. It gets a lot more relaxing after Cawood.
    I'd recommend stopping at the Breighton Ferry on the Derwent. The food it fantastic, and it's always full of wonderfully entertaining people.

    Excellent vlog. That was quite an unusual navigation. Yes the water management arrangements in that area really are interesting. The fact that the navigation runs so far in a straight line, without any locks, shows you how level and flat the land is round there.
    I’ll be looking forwards to your trip the Derwent as I’ve found that my ancestors farmed the land adjacent to the river in the 1600s around Menthorpe, Breighton and Bubwith. Hope to see some pics of the area.

    • @MinimalList

    Hi, Love these Vlogs, mainly because our new boat currently locked down is 58feet 6inches and is currently being built for the Northern Canals and the rivers of the North East. We have cruised most of the canals of middle England over the years. but she was 66 feet!
    I have a blog on WordPress which has a reader category, but no matter what I put in the search engine, it will not pick up yours, which is annoying. So we will be following in your footsteps next year. Your videos are great in cinema format on my laptop

      The New Bedford River (built by Vermuyden, who I am pretty sure is the Dutchman Michael is referring to) is pretty straight. Here's my GPS track. The Old Bedford River is only partly navigable, and is even straighter. Indeed has been used for experiments to measure the radius of the Earth.

Near the beginning, it put "rule" & also even "Google" in place of Goole! Then when you arrived & said Welcome to Goole, it did then at least hear it correctly but spelled it "ghoul" lol.
