You know I found one beautiful thing that when male itsuki died he sang "my love runs on the south wind" and basically south wind arises from south where he lived, to the north where female itsuki lived. Through all those years he loved her in the same way :')
I just rewatched this movie after more than 10 years and I found that there's something I didn't notice the first time I watched it. The main reason male Itsuki went to female Itsuki's house, asking her to return a book for him, is not that he wanted to see her for the last time before he transferred. It's because he wanted to show her the portrait he sketched, to let her know his feelings for her. It's sad that she only saw the portrait after so many years... And another thing I noticed was the title of the book, "Remembrance of Things Lost", which I believe is the main message of the movie. One of the many pleasures of rewatching movies is that you discover something new every time. Love Letter remains one of my favorite movies.
cainat hussain Yeah this is a Japanese movie called Love Letter, released in 1995, directed by Iwai Shunji, starring Nakayama Miho, Toyokawa Etsushi, Kashiwabara Takashi. I suppose you have seen another drama with the same title.
Dalia Olivera I have the movie on DVD. It's actually available on Veoh, if you don't mind the quality, here's the link: www.veoh.com/list/u/islandgurltoo
I have been lurking through several platforms including TH-cam to read people's love for this movie and theories about hidden meanings they noticed in the movie, but somehow I never come across anyone mentioning this detail about the last scene. When female Fujii Itsuki flipped the card and saw her picture, a strong gust of wind noticably blows and made her shiver. I'd like to think this is a reference to the South Wind which is mentioned in the song male Fujii Itsuki sang before his death. "My love riding the South Wind". I think it shows that the love that he delivers with the South Wind finally reached her after all this time, and now she realized his feelings. What a bittersweet ending💔 Although I'm not sure if the South Wind is in Hokkaido during the winter or not, like the timeline of the movie. It's a very lovely detail though if it's true.
The detail you said makes me deeply sad. Tonight I watched each scene and conversation carefully, I realized the love of itzuki male is more than I felt at previous watching. The director tells us repeatedly that only love of male itzuki is for female itzuki. About The last scene you said, I agree with you. So so painful.
This movie is definitely one of the best romance movie in history. Only a few movies can compare with 'Love Letter'. The other movie is called: Be with you. Also a japanese movie. This movie is high level.
I completely agree, I think Japan is the best when it comes to romance/drama films. They nail it most of the times. As for the western chromatography with romance movies sigh.....I can't come up with many
If he had made an effort to return to his hometown Otaru and search for Itsuki once more. If she had only turned over the card upon receiving the book. If he had only mustered the courage to confess to her. If she had only recognized her own feelings on time. If the other Shiregu had confessed his feelings first, numerous things would have turned out differently. Now the only things left are ¨if only¨.
it is sad that she didnt flip the card and see his drawing of her during the library scene. we as audience knows that he loves her but there is no way for her to know until the last scene where she finally turned the card. iwai is a genius to be able to capture the feeling she's got when she finally see her drawing.
There was no romance or love shown in the movie but there was i consider it to be the most romantic movie till now even as a kdrama fan i prefer this above anything this was just sometimes u just can't say a person whom u like and remains in the heart only thanx twice btw
I think because of the brilliance of Shunji Iwai, not TV or drama trappings here (btw I enjoy dramas too) but visual storytelling like this takes a master to pull off.
That book titled Remeberance of Things Past appeared in this movie is exist. It was written by French author Marcel Proust. The book is also known as In Search of Lost Time. I think Love Letter represents Shunji's impression about the book that discusses memories hence produced his own Proustian moment.
Still my favorite Japanese film. When I thought of how he was humming song while waiting for his death at the snowy mountain, how she didn't know his feeling for her until many years later, how the fiancee faced the cruel truth .... argh heart wrenching.
Such an impressive movie was even released before I was born but this is truly amazing. One of the impressive things is how Itsuki's friends thought he didn't even like Seiko Matsuda but continued to mumble her songs until the end of his life, this shows that he actually liked them. it could be said that it is in line with the fact that his feelings for Itsuki female were unknown to anyone until the end. Every scene in this film brings back memories of my old love story, it's really painful. Thank you to everyone who has shared their stories and discussions here. ❤️
The male itsuki did love Hiroko (his fience). When he fell in the mountain, he humming the lyric "My love riding the south wind" ( Seiko matsuda song). Hiroko lives in the Kobe, the city far South from the mountain he climbed (north, Hokkaido island, also where female Itsuki lives ). It gave a closure since Hiroko wondering if she was loved or not. I re-watched the drama and I noticed that this is a subtle thing people will miss unless the translator put it on the note. That's why many people misunderstood.
I think you misunderstood. South wind flows from South to North, so when he sang "My love rides on the south wind", he wanted to send his love through the wind from the south (where he and Hiroko lived) to the north (where female Itsuki lived). So he was actually thinking of the female Itsuki at the time of his death. His friends did not understand why he sang the song, but Hiroko appeared to get it. That's why she looked so sad after hearing about this, and went on to reveal the sad fact that Itsuki did not ask to marry her, but it was she who proposed to him.
@@Shaito_finally someone who gets it. 😭 i understand that many might have find it confusing cause of the translation but the moment Hiroko said that she was the one who proposed cause male Itsuki was quiet and just stood in front of her made me realize that his first love will always be female Itsuki hence the title of the book he wants her to return. Even Hiroko realize it especially towards the end of the movie. This film will always have a special place in my heart. Tragic yet beautiful.
I put this on hold for months now. Been wanting to watch it since it was referenced in the manhwa ‘the best smell’ and boy was I glad I finally was able to see it. I wanted to cry so badly but i cant. My heart just ache for the memories and the what-could-have-beens. The twist and everything was so well made. On the story, i think when male itsuki said it was love at first sight i think he wasnt lying cause they look alike that the taxi driver said they were twins. I think he really did love both girls. I love how this is not really a typical love story but a realization of a love that could have been. When she felt embarrassed at the realization was priceless. I should’ve seen it when she insisted at the start that it there was no romance between them. I guess she could have loved him too if their name did not cause them trouble. She loved him but she failed to see it as such during that time. I cant put to word how good the story was interwoven. That mistake that connected her to female itsuki which in turn made her realized her love for him and made male itsuki’s love known and may have saved her life too. One mistake leads to a series of wonderful events.
Kinda sad for the fiance. He loved Itsuki...first, his first love. Not the fiance. Nevertheless, if he truly love Itsuki...he can always go back to Otaru. ...because Itsuki stayed there. But he never put the effort (my delulu mind) to find her. He settled for somebody that resembled her. Arghhhh....heartache heartache in 2020. Not fair....
I think the same, my heart actually breaks for Hiroko the fiancee when it was revealed that male Itsuki actually loves the female Itsuki, like so unfair... Hiroko loves him so much, not being able to move on after his death and then the reality hit harder when he actually fell for her because she resembled his first love, damn. Till the end, it's still so vague to me whether he truly loved Hiroko or not, what a heartbreaker even after his death lol
he never came back because he thought the female Itsuki knew he liked her after she found the portrait on the card (however, she never did until years later) but she did not replied him, therefore, he thought she did not like him at all.
@@shushi7116 he loved his fience. He sang "my love goes with the south wind" in the mountain. Hiroko lives in the Kobe, the city far south from the Hokkaido (north), where he mountainclimbing. So in his last moment, he remembers his fience
@@debuchhaha7452 No, a 'south wind' is coming from the south and blowing toward the north. Itsuki (female) lives in Otaru (Otaru is to the north of Kobe), you can search it on google. So Itsuki (female) is the one that Itsuki (male) actually heading for. And I think Hiroko can understand and it will easy for her to move on with Akiba.

I watch first time when I was teenager, quite not understood and lost something that this movie want to represent, and watch again at the same age like Itzuki adult, find out something more, still love this movie and this song.
Listening to Aoi Sangoshou make me understand that until the last minutes male Fujii Itsuki had, he thought about his true love, female Fujii Itsuki. he sent his love by the wind that blow from south to north where female Fujii Itsuki is. so sad.
Seiko Matsuda sang the song that was featured in the movie- the one mentioned that the male itsuki sang before he fell to his death. Blue coral reef.- 青い珊瑚礁
I don't understand, if Fujii loved the female Fujii so much until the day he died (right before his death, he was still thinking of her by singing that song), why didn't he reach out to her or try to reconnect with her when he grew up? Instead, he dated her look-alike? She still stayed in the same town, even at the same house - not hard to find or contact her. He also gave her no chance to contact him even if she wants to (didn't tell her he's moving away when she asked why he can't return the book himself; nobody knows where he's moving to). He didn't seem to be that shy or timid. He was actually quite willful and dared to do things without caring what people think (e.g. beating up other boys, running in the race he's not supposed to run). So I don't get why he didn't want to take any action to be with the girl he has been loving throughout his adulthood.
same, you described what im feeling perfectly. it is quite a beautiful movie but it left me feeling incomplete because the action of the people involved doesn't really make sense to me. i guess they made it that way to reach the bittersweet ending.
Did you remember the scene where the female Fuji cried when her classmates mocking her after being chosen as a librarian partnering with the male Fuji? that scene is the answer that female Fuji doesn't have a crush on male fuji and she even unhappy with his existence, probably male Fuji realizes and thinks that is the truth until he dies (IMO)
I think the male itzki might think the female itzki saw the portrait of hers drawn by him but there was no reply, so he thought "she doesn't like me." Maybe because of that, he chose to give her up.
I had to see the scene that Twice recreated❤️ (in What Is Love) I never heard of this movie before but seeing all the clips on TH-cam make want to check it out. Thank you Twice and comment section
I totally did not expect a movie like this after watching and enjoying all about Lily Chou Chou. Yet it's clear that the same filmmaker made this gem. Such a lovely picture.
I really love the story, It really reminds me of youth, moving on, love and remembering the memories that became lost. 🥰 but I really want to share my opinion on this movie, I'm really frustrated that male Itsuki didn't came back for her for so many years just to win her heart but I think it made me realize that male itsuki did fell for Hiroki; even though female itsuki are similar to each other. Hiroki is her fiancee and he did find himself to marry her and spend his life with her if he didn't die. I think he sing that song for female itsuki just to remind that he admired and loved her once in his life and hopes that she knew. _female Itsuki is male Itsuki's first love_ but _Hiroki is male Itsuki's true love._ These two has a huge part of male Itsuki's life. 💗
omg this comment put me at ease, i would really hate the male itsuki if he dated hiroki just because her face looks similar to the female itsuki. i am pretty sure he falls in love with her at first sight due to the resemblances but stay with her because of hiroki's true self
If you remember, when the male ituski proposed to hiroko, he stood there in silence for two hours until hiroko initiated and proposed him. I think he was hesitated. When itsuki died, he sang aoi sangosou something like “my love runs through the south wind, to an island” (something like that), south wind is the wind from south to north whom it should for female itsuki, who is living in North. Itsuki sang that right before he died also mean that he had thinking about her all the time, so i dont think that the song is randomly sung.
There's already an explanation about the fact that the south wind runs toward the north... and, honestly, how can you love someone (and want to build a life with this person) but sing about a past love while you're dying? it makes absolutely no sense. two hours with a ring, but being unable to propose? although It's clear that he never knew how to act around girls, I believe it occurred because he cared about her and achieved the relationship he wanted to build with his first love, who looks like his girlfriend, but then he realized that a look alike is not the same... and end up ignoring these conclusions because he couldn't know how to fight for the love he couldn't express. I'm sure he thought they would never became a couple and Hiroko has his only chance of happiness. Hiroko has the love we feel for dear friends. we can live a happy life with it, but female itsuki was the love of his life, the one he sang about before dying young at a mountain.
light yet heavy, past meets the present, joyful but bitter, regretful but answered, death goes in line with life, in cruelty where beauty is grown, such a complex flavor.
i just watched this movie yesterday (learned about this through Twice) beautiful yet sad movie. if you havent seen this movie yet then go watch it now. its really good.
I feel stupid now :( in my head I separated adult itsuki (the boy) from the highschool one and didn't realise the fuji couple was a thing until the library girls gave the girl itsuki the portrait and that broke my heart even harder cuz everyone here is miserable 😕 it was a great movie made me cry a lot and strangely it brought a nostalgia of memories I've never had , will probably give it a second watch

It is a very beautiful film! It remains me of my schooldays that will never come back. Thank you for sharing!
Just finish watching the film!! amazing I wish more romanceish films like this came out today
This movie confused the hell out of me at first and then plots continues to unfold and I WAS SHOOKETH
2013년부터 해마다 몇번씩 들러서 듣고 있습니다. 영화의 감성을 너무 잘 살려서 편집하셨네요^^ 감사합니다.
종종 찾아주셔서 감사합니당^^
You know this movie is the most beloved japanese movie in Korea. Even though japanese culture was banned in Old days.
Only the Asian world makes such beautiful, bittersweet romances anymore.
The Fault In Our Stars is a great all time American book/romance movie too tho (:
There’s many good western romance movies but you can’t find them anymore. They stopped making those great movies after 2015/2016.
mind sharing the other asian movies that makes you said that?
Twice what is love brought me here i think this really makes me cry
Twice what is love brought me here hehe gonna watch this movie 😍
Listening to Aoi Sangoshou make me understand that until the last minutes male Fujii Itsuki had, he thought about his true love, female Fujii Itsuki. he sent his love by the wind that blow from south to north where female Fujii Itsuki is. so sad.

Love the original song with Seiko Matsuda!
Yes :3
coisasnatv me too
It is available on spotify .??
Seiko Matsuda sang the song that was featured in the movie- the one mentioned that the male itsuki sang before he fell to his death. Blue coral reef.- 青い珊瑚礁
@@yen597 blue coral reef is the name of that song which sang by itsuki?
Twice's "WHAT SI LOVE" brought me here... and, I'm loving it ♡♡♡

二人の樹の甘く切なくほろ苦い学生生活に懐かしい昔を思い出します。あの頃に戻りたいですね。最後の似顔絵のシーンよかった。
I always go back to this edit 🥺🥺
Exactly first he didn't confess to female itsuki. Then didn't even properly propose the poor Hiroko watanabe. He kinda ruined both the ladies.
I just realized that Fujii never said goodbye at all to Itsuki....:(
I had to see the scene that Twice recreated❤️ (in What Is Love)
I never heard of this movie before but seeing all the clips on TH-cam make want to check it out. Thank you Twice and comment section
One of The best movies in my life.
这不电影是我最喜欢的青春片,没有之一。i like it so much and i was amazed by the director when i met it the first time in 2016.
Twice brought me here n woww the boy very good looking there is something in his eyes that looks very charming. . . 😍
I just finished watching this movie. I have the most weirdest feelings now. Best movie
it’s been months since i watched this movie, and i can’t still get over this :((
I totally did not expect a movie like this after watching and enjoying all about Lily Chou Chou. Yet it's clear that the same filmmaker made this gem. Such a lovely picture.
Thinking about this ending again and I myself want to scream into the mountains
初恋じゃない、昔の淡い思い出に涙する人は、きっと素敵な時間を過ごしたんでしょうね。
海外の人からも愛されてて
すごく嬉しくなりました。
so this is what Jihyo's twice played on what is love music video. seems like a sweet movie
This movies was masterpiece😭😭
우연히 보고 영상에 빠져 새벽을 지세우네요. 좋은 영상 감사합니다.
聖子ちゃんの歌が素敵ですし、友人や知人や両親を見送る時にこの映画に惹かれます
My best Romance movie ever.
I really love the story, It really reminds me of youth, moving on, love and remembering the memories that became lost. 🥰
but I really want to share my opinion on this movie, I'm really frustrated that male Itsuki didn't came back for her for so many years just to win her heart
but I think it made me realize that male itsuki did fell for Hiroki; even though female itsuki are similar to each other. Hiroki is her fiancee and he did find himself to marry her and spend his life with her if he didn't die. I think he sing that song for female itsuki just to remind that he admired and loved her once in his life and hopes that she knew.
_female Itsuki is male Itsuki's first love_
but
_Hiroki is male Itsuki's true love._
These two has a huge part of male Itsuki's life. 💗
omg this comment put me at ease, i would really hate the male itsuki if he dated hiroki just because her face looks similar to the female itsuki. i am pretty sure he falls in love with her at first sight due to the resemblances but stay with her because of hiroki's true self
@@yeon1573 thank you so much! :) btw love your reply 🤗
@@linhdieu7497 sorry for the super late reply
yes I remember that scene 😊 but for my opinion it's not really stated why he was hesitated that time, yet he still ended up proposing with hiroki; if he doesn't want it then he should just say no and tell her that he loves someone else, and go to female itsuki and win her heart than being unfair to hiroki. I think male itsuki its not that kind of person.
I just read a new comment about these that the song is really for hikori and we just misunderstood it,
that hiroki lives in the kobe, the city far south from the mountain he climbed(north hokkaido island, also where female itsuki lives)
© debuch haha
Hiroki was wondering if she was loved or not and that was a closure that she was really loved.
and for female itsuki
that was a bittersweet confession from male itsuki for her, that he once loved her.
if these were really true, I think it's better than being unfair.
and I think the writer will not do that, coz why he/she put Hiroki just to tell us that she was only a replacement of his lost love 😔
so I think both of them were loved, in the past and present.
The original song is by Matsuda Seiko, the singer whose songs the boy Fujii Itsuki in the film liked and sang before his death.
light yet heavy, past meets the present, joyful but bitter, regretful but answered, death goes in line with life, in cruelty where beauty is grown, such a complex flavor.
I thank TH-cam for recommending me this vid. It's been so long since the last time I watched a romance movie xD

This is the best movie ever
Never get tired of listening to this song, many years passed, i'm coming back again with broken heart.
I still remember this film, I watch it when I still 10 years old. It's such a wonderful story that I ever watch.
I watched this movie when I was a kiddo. Now I watched it again after so many years... I am still in love with this movie.

i just watched this movie yesterday (learned about this through Twice)
beautiful yet sad movie.
if you havent seen this movie yet then go watch it now. its really good.
Where I can watch this movie?
I feel stupid now :( in my head I separated adult itsuki (the boy) from the highschool one and didn't realise the fuji couple was a thing until the library girls gave the girl itsuki the portrait and that broke my heart even harder cuz everyone here is miserable 😕 it was a great movie made me cry a lot and strangely it brought a nostalgia of memories I've never had , will probably give it a second watch
처음 본 일본 영화였지만 다신 없을 따뜻한 기억이었습니다.
영화 특유의 감성이 노래 분위기와 잘 어울리네요. 새벽 감수성을 터지게하는 시리고 아름다운 영상이에요TT
It's a movie I can watch over and over again, simple story, the whole movie is just a feeling... can anyone recommend any similar movies?
21st Century Girl. Lovely Korean movie, made in 2020 but was based in 1999. Cried for days with this one
thanks! not the crying type, but def will check it out!@@ECHOOOEntertainment
The problem with korean drama is ... the actors actresses are just... too pretty. call me a misanthrope, but that just yank me right out of the emersion.@@ECHOOOEntertainment
@@weepingcamel1 I agree. They're too focused on visuals over the actual production of the film. Very few are impactful. 21st Century Girl and It's Okay To Not Be Okay being great ones
This video is in my recommendation page because I keep watching videos about Twice's new MV 😂
Thank you for making this! Lovely!
I watched it because of Jihyo and Jeongyeon Scene In What is Love MV
