I've just finished Oathbringer and could finally watch this video.
I've got to say that those last 7 chapters kept me reading till it was way past bedtime!
I really liked this book, but there are too many people in the Interludes that I have no idea who they are and have even forgotten their names. Since I'll be returning the book to the library soon, I feel like I should have taken notes (😵 who wants to do that while reading?) so next time they appear, I'll know a bit about them. Well, no chance now because Rhythms of War is on my bedside table already. 🙂

    SPOILER
a moment that stood out to me in Oathbringer (one of my favorite scenes in this book) is when Jasnah is about to kill Renarin but he turns around and accepts his fate, but we then see Jasnah’s barrier break and they share this family moment that actually had me tearing up a bit.

I think this book threw me off cuz it's Dalinars book, but other than getting his flashbacks I felt like Shallan was the main character throughout.
But it's nice to see some healthy criticism. I often feel like people put Sando on a pedestal where he can do no wrong

I can finally watch these Stormlight discussion videos after finishing Oathbringer last month. Dalinar is one of my favourite characters in the series and his arc is so good to read. I'm always surprised that people don't like Shallan after reading the first book. I didn't like her at first but around halfway through the Way of Kings I always looked forward to her chapters and wanted to read hers more than Kaladin

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the review/discussion! I actually really did enjoy part 4 and all the time spent in Shadesmar (tbh those were some of my favorite parts) though I do feel like it slows the pacing down overall. I think it definitely would have made a really good standalone novella!

When I read the book I kept waiting for someone to demand, "BRING ME AN OATH!" But alas, that didn't seem to be what the story was about. I mean this could have been a LOTR-esque journey of characters having to bring an oath somewhere. But no. LOL.

  • @chrisisbookinit
    @chrisisbookinit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yesss, poor Evi. When Dalinar said “I don’t deserve that woman” I was like, he’s not wrong 😬 which makes the “you cannot have my pain” all the more a standing ovation for me. For some reason it took me forever to figure out Zahel but Azure was very quick for me. Dalinar isn’t my favorite but Navani *is* and I enjoyed that we got more of her in Oathbringer, I’m working my way through RoW now and honestly living for the Navani POVs. Would love it if we got flashbacks for her though.

I enjoyed Oathbringer quite a bit. I liked the slower pace, because it feels more like real life, it can't always be breakneck speed turned up to 11. But overall, Inked Oathbringer. If I had to rank Stormlight books, it would go: Words of Radiance, Way of Kings, Oathbringer, Dawnshard, Edgedancer, Rhythm of War. I really didn't care for Rhythm of War, but I'll save that comment for that video.
I noticed a shift in Brandon's writing right around Bands of Mourning. That book felt really bloated in a way that none of his books ever did before, but I wrote it off as a one time thing. I mean with that man's output, it's going to be impossible to love or even like everything he puts out. Reckoners existing is proof of that. However, after reading and being gut punched disappointed in RoW, I did a bit of digging. It seems that his original editor Moshe retired right around then, and his new editor is a woman named Devi. So, that off feeling I had been having about his books was right.
I still have hopes for Stormlight 5, but after watching his Rhythm of War editing video here on TH-cam where he sat down with Peter, Karen and Devi, where he basically said that he was free to write as much as he wanted and whenever an editor told him to trim it down and he disagreed, no trimming would happen. Basically, he's too big to be edited. But more isn't better, it's just gratuitous, it bogs the story down and gets repetitive. Like taking the most boring storyline from Oathbringer and doing it all over again in Rhythm of War, but instead of one section, it's through the whole book.
Then there's the pacing, which I enjoyed up until the last section. The whole battle with Amaram so much stuff happened so fast I got whiplash. I had to go back and reread that section all over again because I wasn't sure about some things and flat out confused about others.
Lastly, there's the fandom. I used to hang out on r/fantasy, the 17th shard and all the Sanderson subreddits, and the Wheel of Time ones too. But it's getting harder. The fandom used to be so welcoming, but I feel that it's getting a bit, well, bat-shit crazy. I feel like there should be a new internet rule that is ingrained as deeply as rule 34 is and that would be: You are not allowed to be uncomplimentary towards Sanderson's works. I'm not joking. Several prominent BookTubers have added disclaimers at the start of reviews of his books saying "I still liked the book and Brandon is a great guy, so please put down the pitchforks and torches when I have a critique of the writing." One of them was Mike's Book Reviews on his Elantris review. And the rabid SanderStans (which is what I'm calling the toxic ones) still came to write not so nice things. It's even worse on Reddit, if you're one of those odd people like me who thought he did poorly with the end of WoT but love his solo stuff. People take it personally either against them or as against Sanderson as a person when someone says they did not like something he wrote. It's even more crazy because this is the guy who says "My books aren't for everyone, and it's fine if they're not your thing." I don't know many people in real life who read, much less epic fantasy and scifi, to others online the only way I have do discuss books, and I would like to continue to do so minus the anxiety I have when posting an out Sanderson, because I don't enjoy the hail of downvotes and people acting like I kicked their puppy whenever I don't absolutely live his writing.

Words of Radiance remains my favorite but I definitely have Oathbringer as a close second. I'm expecting that you'll have some similar feelings about Rhythm of War that I did as I pretty much disliked 1/3 of that one and Way of Kings took me forever to get into. I think Oathbringer shined in its strength as a character study. Dalinar is just so interesting and well thought out and I feel like Sanderson did a fantastic job of expanding on him as a character. WoK and WoR are both great but Oathbringer really did a great job with showing us everything there is to know about how tortured Dalinar is and how TERRIBLE he was in the past.

Great review, btw I too think that Oathbringer is an amazing book but I am torn as Words of Radiance might have been just a bit more of a fun book to read. I do like the way Dalinar character arch has gone so far. I really like Adolin because he brings a level of grounding to the story because he is not a radiant. That makes me feel like I am in his corner rooting for him to succeed with love and survival in the battles he faces. Renarin is so misunderstood and I like how finally sees some acceptance and love from his family.

@@henrywayne5724 It definitely felt very bloated to me too. I didn’t mind the stuff in Kholinar but I got really tired of Shadesmar with Shallan doing whatever she was doing in the bead ocean. Those scenes dragged for way too long, but hopefully it will be better when I reread it

    • @henrywayne5724
      @henrywayne5724 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@janhavi1977 One of the main reasons the Kholinar plotline drove me nuts was because nothing interesting was happening. I didn't care for the Wall Guard or all those tactics of infiltration. We finding out about the Unmade mythos could've been done better. Also, the whole Shallan+Veil+Radiant storyline drove me nuts. I must say, however, that the conclusion of that part was really satisfying, from the chapter The Girl Who Looked Up all the way to Elhokar's death. It was also satisfying because as a reader, I was tired of Kholinar.
Part 4's complaints are largely the same. But one thing I really thank Sanderson for was starting new arcs that would stretch to Book 4. He nailed Kaladin's descent and we finally got a glimpse of Adolin's insecurities then.

For me, it makes sense that Dakinar takes up Honor, but also somehow breaks Odium's binding to Roshar, heightening the stakes for the second arc. And I think Shallan is very well set up to become the ultimate Ghostblood hunter in Book 5 and then the second arc. Oathbringer has my favorite moments in the series, and my least favorite parts (I'm looking at YOU, shadesmar) But for me, the high points ABSOLUTELY justify the "problems".
One question. People complain that the book has slow parts that could be trimmed down, but I'm absolutely sure that if it was trimmed, people would call the character development rushed. Better to be realistically slow than rushed. Give Oathbringer a break, not every book can be WoR.

Interesting that you think Sanderson is "holding the readers hand" by being repetitive. I had the opposite experience. There was so much terminology introduced in this book that I feel could've been explained better, like I kept having this feeling that I missed an important explanation for stuff like the fused, the unmade, Shallans personas etc.
I am listening to the audiobook so maybe that's the reason why I felt lost with a lot of the terminology.

Everything Shallan’s and the Cognitive Realm part were absolutely awful but the ending was worth. Dalinar cemented himself as the best character overall, so far.

Each book gets worse, overall. In a book so long, there will be good moments, sure, but there is such a slog between them... also Brandon manages to ruin all the characters that I actually liked, though I still like Adalin and Navani a bit. They haven't been destroyed like the others. Kaladin and Dalanar are just ruined for me. I will read the next book because I already have it loaded up on my reader, not because the characters call to me. I'm invested in the overall world building at the story is interesting enough to want more. I don't know if there will ever be a good 'ending' to it but I do want to see where BS takes it. It could be a cautionary tale for a writer...

It's addressed in Rhythm of War, they didn't just become friends, they just accepted his help in a time of need

I thought the last part of Oathbringer was so rushed it gave me whiplash, and overall didn't fit in the rest of the book.

Her pun filled humor and dad jokes have nothing to do with why I don't love Shallan. She is a 17 year old girl dealing with identity issues whilst we have a former warmonger trying to unite a country and unearth ancient ideals, and a former slave who is struggling with the moral principles of what is right and what is wrong in the world. Shallans issues don't match the other two main characters even remotely. She comes off as spoiled and overly dramatic. Though she does have a tragic backstory, I don't find her endearing because of that.
In any other book where she was the star, I'd appreciate and enjoy her much more. But contrasting her against Dalinar and Kaladin makes her so irritating to me.

Kaladin freezing up and letting Elhokar die (as well as several other friends btw) is the one un-earned plot device moment I think Brandon is guilty of in the whole series. I believe it was for a worthy cause - to set up Hoid getting a spren he shouldn't have and so much of the necessary context for Rhythm of War. But while almost every other criticism you can have a solid back and forth complaint vs justification argument over, that moment just doesn't add up. But again, it had to happen.

@@CapturedInWords Cool! This is a long term bet, but I'm sure they're going to tweak that scene in the eventual TV series we'll get one sweet day. Maybe shoot it as much more of an abbreviated shock scene -- I would make it more of a "watching the glass cup fall off the table across the room yelling noooo" kind of moment. 😅

I really, really loved that moment. it had built up so well that Kaladin would freeze when all the sides collided.

Oathbringer is my least favorite Stormlight book, but I love it nonetheless. And yeah I love shallan as well. 😍 What’s your ranking of the books jay?

    • @CapturedInWords

Hmmmmmmm I think from best to worst my ranking is: Oathbringer, Words of Radiance, The Way of Kings, Rhythm of War. I'm kinda surprised I put RoW as my least favorite because I still really like it and love all the cosmere reveals, but overall I feel like it had the biggest pacing issues, not as much character growth, and I kinda expected more from the plot.
