- The cheapest weapon in Last Day on Earth has mod options, but are they worth investing in? In this episode I give some thoughts on the effectiveness of a spear with the best weapon mods equipped. Contrary to what you think, spear is actually one of the best weapon to mod.

The first major advantage it has is that you can craft a fully modded spear easily while you're clearing resource zones. Spear is the only weapon that can be crafted with materials found while clearing zones.

Secondly,. spear is extremely efficient, resource wise. it's dirt cheap to craft. No weapon can compete with spear on resource efficiency. Using it as one of the weapons in quick slots, you can switch to your modded spear and sneak attack to one-shot 40hps zombies, deers, turkeys, and finishing off low hp zombies after having fought them using your main weapons. All these save substantial amount of durability on melee weapons while achieving the same outcome.

Thirdly, modded spear has some of the longest range among all melee weapons, when you're smelly and animals run from you, long range weapons like spears make it very easy to chase, sneak attack wild animals when they are running, make it easy to hunt animals even when stinking, and not having to wait for animal friend to charge. ( You can sneak attack while stinking and have the sneak attack bonus applied to running wild animals).
Then there are all kind of tricks and exploits that can only be used by long range weapons, like the chopper/ work benches tricks.

I'm still using spear constantly as one of the 3 weapons in my quick slots despite having finished mods for most of the currently available weapons, mainly because I like the do things the most efficient way possible.

I literally clear farm and bunker alpha through wall trick alone using just spears. Just bring a good amount of pine logs with you and you’re set. Also, a saw blade mace to initially sneak attack big zombies. You can even clear hard mode if you’re patient enough

Funny - i gladly fully upgraded spears as I am using them all the times - for green/yellow farming (with pipe in second slot for one-shot 80hp), for Ravager and all lesser zombies on Farm etc.
If your reflexes are quick enough, spears are a way more economic choice for wall-tricking, but it's still better to use crowbars when wall-tricking fast bitters and toxic spitters, specially when there are multiple of them
For single enemies spear is very useful for walltricks

I think that fully Martinez spear is worth it for players that are playing the game all the time and that are grinding it to where they only use the bare minimum to gain the most they can but if you're playing the game to have fun and not to save as much resources as you can it's probably better spent on something like a gun or something
Good point! It would have definitely been more useful if I had been able to get access its mods earlier in the game...when being stingy about iron/leather was much more of a necessity.
I still think the spear mods are pretty good and I wouldn’t say grinding with spear is no fun, u just have to use it the right way(wall trick in Bunker Alfa, Motel and maybe even PD). If I’m trying to get oak(usually red zones), I’d suggest u to use another weapon. I like the combination of sawblade mace and machete/Katana(+Glock if u wanna make sure to not die).
I HAVE THE MOD BUT I HAVEN'T BUILT THEM BECAUSE I DON'T USE THE SPARE LIKE THAT BUT IT'S A GOOD WEAPON FOR ROAMING ZOMBIES AND KILLING DEER OR TURKEY

I modded the spear with the bloodspiller and sidearm knife as i got those blueprints from farm and im using spear for walltrick in bunker alpha which works surprisingly well against frenzied giants and even against toxic spitters. I recommend you invest into those mods as theyll save you a lot of guns and higher class melee weapons in the long run.

I have the bone spear instead of a bloodspiller, because I don’t have that one yet, but I definitely want it and mod it as soon as I get my hands on it. Spear is very useful because of its cheapness.
Best mod i ever crafted, the best tool for bunker alfa, the range is long, and the damage is almost like crowbar but its so cheap to craft, now i wish theres an extremely rare mod
that extremely rare mod is too op but i hope that next update that is in 2 days brings that mod cuz new weapon comes to the game
Funnily enough, I’ve just started clearing the farm after getting the motorcycle and the first mod I got was the sidearm knife mod. Guess I’ll start investing in Spear mods lmao
I use spear a lot of time for bunker alpha and the farm. It so cheap and have quite similar stats with crowbars. It also require single type of material making it slot efficient for your backpack. The mods only require 6 steel plate and other abundant materials. For F2P player whose resources very limited,its definitely good and better than crowbars (3 woods vs 21 iron ore and 3 leather, not to mention time to craft the ingredient)
Well first of all if you use spears in bunker alfa or in farm it will take soooooooooo much time which makes it boring. Second, just take 5 or 10 mins in a green stone zone you can get a decent amount of iron ore and leather which is what crowbars require. Third, spears are for farming zones.
Fourth the mods for spear uses many rare resources(expect some of them), you said that the mods require 6 steel plates and other abundant materials which is a waste of resources. Fifth is that even when you put mods for spears it won’t be as good as the crowbars nor will it be better than crowbars.
I think its good, the best part is you dont have to go blacksmith bench to uprade it just pick some wood in zone then you have full mod spear but i dont have better mods😢
Good point about the convenience. That's probably the main benefit!
The only downside I see to using first for walltrick is the time sink. It can take me like an hour and a half to clear the bunker with spears. But I'm dedicated to the grind and love being as cheap as possible, so the spear is easily my favorite weapon in the game.

My theory in the active mod skill for spear is possibly carbon handle thing, and it will give you the ability of direct spear stab possibly, and makes at least better damage than spear normal basic attacks, but costs more durability than normal
The active mod will make the spear throwable. At least that's what the devs said

@@Annie-cd6ue 13 damage with 24 crit, thats already better than a crowbar, and 3 wood is super cheap compared to 7 iron and 3 leather, id rather save those irons for metal pipe to do hard mode

It’s very good for bunker Alfa. That’s how I save guns on frenzied giants, I wall trick them with a spear.
I modded my spear to wall trick bunker alfa and i'm pretty satisfied with the result. In exchange for a couple stacks of wood and 2 hours of your time, you full clear f2 and f3 on normal and hardmode (obviously use guns on TBO), which grants you almost 30 red tickets every time combined with half a floppy crate.
I am celaring bunker alfa with spears but it takes long time to finish. (Only rag handle is absent, i am using duct tape handle.)
The fully moded spear is usefull to give to the raiders after a raid

It's permanent, you do it once and everytime you craft a spear it comes already modded
Spears are good for killing frinzie gaints by wall trick in bunker alpha, so by assembling this mods u can do bunker alpha in an even more cheaper way.
When you put mods for the spears it won’t be effective for bunker alfa. It takes a lot of time to finish 2nd and 3rd floor. Btw it is cheap to craft the spear but the mods, nope, they are expensive two of the mods require steel plates which is hard to find when you are a free to play player unless you are pay to win.
6 steel plates is like 20 minutes of farming dude
A fully modded spear is actually a great substitute for crowbar for walltricking in bunker alfa. I started using spears when I ran out of iron and I just never go back. I use it for hard mode too, take much more time though
You ran out of iron? Maybe it's just my inner farmer monkey brain but like I filled a box with iron ore and I've been set since then for the most part, however I don't have fully built chopper yet as I'm missing the tank
@@occul4rsn1pes32 well when you move towards midgame you will probably not go mine iron every single day and also you have to use iron a lot. And so unless you get really good raids with tons of iron, it can be a problem
My recommendation would be to get your iron ore up and stick it in a box for later, then spend a day going back and forth to pine Grove or pine brush to get logs for planks, then use the planks to make charcoal for a box of char

They only need to be crafted once. Unlimited application after that. :)
advantages of fully modding the spear:
- dirt cheap
- good for walltrick
- cheapest way to satisfy the Raiders
- good for resource zones
- one of the longest range melee weapons

I use the bow with added range for savage giants when there are too many to wall trick at the same time. Also, I don't know if anybody else does this, but with fully modded spears you can strike, dodge & repeat on slow zombies(like roamers) without needing to wall trick.

I think is worth crafting the spear, for example I give spears to raiders one fully moded spear satisfied the raider, another is I'm putting this fully moded spears in bait chest 15-20 spears so that I have 100% guarantee getting a revenge raid

For later in the game clearing green zones for wood or stone and farming leather... go naked with 1 or 2 modded spears 6 wood tops and you can farm the whole green zone.. OR you can keep 1 with you just for deer and turkey so you don't waste durability of other/better weapons... 3 wood so it's pretty disposable if you want the slot also.

I use the spear to kill frenzied giants,saves guns and my modded weapons
I was able to hack the game and get the active skill Wich is so dope
You basically turn the spear into a 1 time use throwing spear that deals good dammages and 1 shots animals but u will loose it

I crafted it as more of a novelty weapon. I think it gives more value than modding a zip gun though!
