  • I had no idea they made a fifth-wheel that was tow-able with a half-ton truck! While we were visiting Walnut Ridge and filming I had the chance to tour the Cougar 29RKS and see what all this half-ton capable fifth-wheel had to offer.
    Special thanks to our sponsor Walnut Ridge for allowing me to come film for the day, and for the fantastic guided tour!

    I just bought the 36' version of this by Keystone, weighs just under 12,000 pounds. Was also told that it was designed for 1/2 tons. I pull it with a 3/4 ton diesel, and based on how much of a load it puts on my truck, I can not imagine anyone using a 1/2 ton for this. There is absolutely no way a 1/2 ton could handle this safely and travel thru any hilly areas.

    No way is this half ton towable. I have towed a FW at dry 6900lb, while the numbers are ok even with max tow or HD payload, stability and braking are poor. I tow now with F250 6.2l and it is a great match. We knew when buying the FW I was planning on replacing the truck at the end of that year. It truly gave me the opportunity to try what they call "halfton towable" and now able to compare and honestly speak to it. Safe travels!

    So many below are missing the key point. It is not the tow capacity, it is the Payload Capacity: king pin weight, hitch weight (~200lbs) 15-20% of added trailer weight (propane and battery and cargo) and truck cargo (you, others, cargo). The payload weight is on the drivers B pillar. It is measured for each truck individually as they leave the line. Sure it may pull like a dream, but like bending a paper clip, it will break: tires, bearings, suspension, etc. Then the laywer will take everything you own in an accident.

    I have a Rockwood ultra light with 3 slides. The dry weight is 7,560 lbs. they say it’s half ton towable as well with a short bed truck. I actually bought my new truck before I bought the camper and decided to get the Ram 2500 heavy duty for better pulling power.

    Wow, and people tell me I can't haul a simple 2 horse gooseneck with a small weekender with my truck... can't imagine what ALL that weight is inside this big trailer! Especially with the slideouts and countertops! Probably thousands over the max!

I'm so sick of watching 'reviews' where some moron spends 25 minutes on the OUTSIDE before going inside! You're exactly right, if you don't like the inside, who gives a shit about the outside??? Thanks, there's hope for humanity yet!

    I purchased a trailer that the salesman said "could" have been towed with (at the time) with my F150. After buying the trailer, I found out that the pin weight with a loaded truck (people) was too much. I bought a F250 and towed it without any problems for a few years. But, I soon learned that these light weight trailers are fair weather units. I could not cool it in hot weather and in cold weather, the heater was on all the time. Keep this in mind if you are thinking about getting one of these light weight trailers. They are not built with the insulation qualities of a heavier trailer.

    Throw a bag of ice cubes and the toilet enzyme stuff in your toilet when you are packing up & ready to go, and only use RV toilet paper. Works great. The ice cubes knock the crud off the inside of the tank and the next time you connect & dump, everything washes right out.

    Thanks for that heads up. This TT is just about perfect. Yes with that weight it would work for a F250. You would still have some payload left. Not a lot but yes its doable. My wife really wants a tub but with not going BIG, most are just showers. But we would definitely have that seat part. That would be a must because of her foot. That would work for us. I was going to ask price but I watched again and just caught that on the table. Little high but that means there are some possibilities. And good news, I made up my mind on the new truck. Found a deal on a 2017 F250 6.7. Pulled the trigger Sat but it is out a ways and still waiting for it to get to my dealer. Nice review. Thanks......

    When talking half ton towable it isn't actual weight that they need to discuss they need to discuss pin weight. Most half ton trucks will only have a 1,300lbs- 1,900lbs of payload with an average of 1,500lbs of payload so you are maxing out your trucks payload before you put people and equipment in the truck which will get you in trouble if you were to get into an accident along with increased wear and tear on your truck. Yes this trailers pin weight is 1,600lbs almost 1,700lbs but you are still almost maxing out the truck before you put anything inside

    • @braddavidson270
      @braddavidson270 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      You are spot on. Very few 1/2 tons with the ability to pull this trailer loaded. Its empty weight is a couple hundred pounds under a Ram 1500 capacity, but what happens when you load your 1200 pounds of stuff in it? And 2 adults are adding 400 pounds or better. These are not stable with a half ton, and you are going to wear your truck out quick.

    • @mrjack8849
      @mrjack8849 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Agreed. I think I've only seen one fifth wheel that I would consider towing with a half ton after some modifications to the truck. Dealers should not be openly advertising fifth wheels as half ton towable. If they start manufacturing half ton fifth wheels I would question the quality of the trailer and why it's so light or assume half ton trucks are becoming more capable, which is the case sometimes. However, It is very misleading to say all half tons can tow this. I would rather hear "this trailer is towable with a capable half ton".

    • @normbaril6667
      @normbaril6667 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Totally agree Mike! So many people think because the weight of the trailer is within the towable limit of a half ton that the are within limits but if the pin weight of this trailer is 1600lbs there’s no way a half ton is within limits.
      I fell for a salesman’s pitch with the “half ton towable” on our trailer but after a year with it and taking it to the scales I now drive a 3/4 ton.

      the most success I had was to take your VIN number, go to Ford's website and access their online chat. Tell them you are looking for your specific trucks tow capacity and give them the vin. They are very helpful and tell you your exact vehicle information. There are so many variables: tow package, transmission cooler, etc... You can also take a picture of the RPO codes in your glovebox and look up those specific codes to see what your truck has. Check out my other video for more info: th-cam.com/video/XUC5dZAnaT8/w-d-xo.html

    It’s absolutely mind blowing how many misinformed RVers there are when it comes to towing. Just because you got a 400hp hemi and a 10k Tow capacity doesn’t mean you can pull a 9k 5er. Check your payload capacity people. A family member of mine has a 2017 Ram bighorn 5.7 4x4. He only has 1399lbs of payload. By the time you add hitch weight and passengers you’re out of luck. If you own a standard cab long box 2wd then maybe.

    i own a half ton Ram 1500 and i have put variable rate 3/4 ton springs on it however all in all it is still a half ton chassis.. I would never pull this trailer with my half ton pickup.. EVER! My puckup isnt designed to tow something like this and much more important it isnt as capable to stop it as a 3/4 or 1 ton would be.. Just cause they put the words 1/2 ton towable doesnt mean that in real life it truly is.. it might be fine just going across town but if you hit the hwy your only asking for trouble..

    We have a half ton camper. And had the half ton truck. Had to get a 3/4 ton truck. Kept going threw tires. Was told by Camping World carrying to much weight for a half ton truck. So got a 3/4 ton truck. If you get in a accident because you are carrying to much weight. Your fault no matter what. Plus you are not driving safe. So people if you get a half ton camper get a 3/4 ton truck. Be safe.

    • @47driver2
      @47driver2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Going through tires because you were not using the correct tires. This had nothing to do with the tow vehicle. The 3/4 ton trucks come standard with the "E" rated tires. The 1/2 ton trucks come with LT tires. You spent WAY to much $$ to upgrade your tires. Camping World sold you a bill of goods. As for the old wive's tale of "you're at fault if you weigh too much", it isn't true. Fault is separated between civil and criminal liability. If you are overweight (which 90% of RVs on the road are) you will not be criminally liable for an accident you did not directly cause. Insurance (civil) may argue for a bit, but generally, insurance goes the way of the police citations for direct causation. This is my experience as a professional accident investigator. The last false impression is that a 1/2 ton can't stop a trailer. Any trailer that weighs over 3500# is required to have trailer brakes. If the manufacturer lists the max weight, it is safe to tow and stop. These weights are based on a litany of liability de-ratings of the equipment. Having traveled that entire world, it is only in the United States that we "require" so much vehicle to tow a trailer.

    Rockwood Ultra Light 2440BS has a Hitch weight of 1080. Our F-150 has a payload of 1600lb.
    Deduct weight of Full Fuel tank, Me and my wife's weight Fifth wheel hitch and rails, Dog, Cooler (small for drinks and snacks) and we were left with 1210lbs of Payload.
    Legal=yes
    Comfortable to drive down Rt 70 to Moab=?
    Weigh your trucks at a certified (CAT) scale and you will be surprised what you can haul.
    We weigh our rig at a CAT scale and carry the yellow certified time stamped document before each trip and if were comfortable and legal we go.
    God forbid anything happens out on the road you'll at least have a document that you did everything by the manufactures spec and in fact you were responsible enough and took precautions.

    I'm going to be generous and add 500 lbs of cargo to this 8600 lb fifth wheel to bring it up to 9100 lbs. That means your carrying 1365 lbs of pin wieght. That's not half ton towable so I believe your misinformed.
    If you weigh a half ton truck and subtract that curb weight from the gvwr on that truck you will be lucky to have 1300 lbs left over. Add a full tank of fuel, fifth wheel hitch and two passengers to that mix and your over weight. 7000 lb maximum fifth wheel would be half ton territory not 8600 lbs dry.

      GVWR-The vehicle's chassis, body, engine, engine fluids, fuel, accessories, driver, passengers and cargo but excluding that of any trailers.
      GCWR-, is the maximum allowable combined mass of a road vehicle, the passengers and cargo in the tow vehicle, plus the mass of the trailer and cargo in the trailer.

    You should have a 3/4 ton to pull this one. Remember that the dealers are going to try to sell you something. Most dealers don't care about your safety just worried about the dollar they can make. Not all dealers are that way but you will find them out there and they are difficult to spot because they sound so believable. Just beware... Know your numbers and have some to spare so that you can drive home after thanksgiving dinner.

      Great feedback! I will say this...we purchased our TT from Nicki @ Walnut Ridge during the Boat, Sport, and Travel show last year. She questioned us several times about our truck and it's capabilities. At the time we had a Sierra 1500 with the tow package. We could pull 9,800 and our camper came in at 7,800. Her advise was that yes, it could pull it, but it was on the higher side. We have since upgraded to a Ford F-350 SD, not because of towing, but because of space. We had zero issues with towing the camper with the Sierra. We even went on vacation last year 1400 miles round trip. That being said, it is an even better towing experience with the 350! I could not agree with you more that you MUST know your specific vehicles capabilities! I have even witnessed car dealers not being honest about a vehicles tow capabilities. As you already know, not every truck is the same. There are so many individual factors at play. I found the simplest method to be: take the VIN, contact the manufacturer directly, and get it striaght from the horses mouth. I highly recommend anyone buying a RV to arm themselves with this information before they ever step foot on a dealers lot. Not everyone has the luxury of having a Walnut Ridge just down the road. :-) Thank you again for the comment, and coming to my channel! One last thing. I just gave your channel a sub! Happy Camping!

    I would like to see a half ton truck pull this thing with any capacity left over for safety. I am sure only a small hand full half ton trucks Like the Nissan Titan with the diesel could handle it. I have a new 5.3 Silverado with the tow package and factory brake controller that is not rated to tow this much loaded trailer weight. This thing has a GVWR of 10,410 pounds and a dry pin weight of 1,670 pounds that will only go up when loaded. My truck is rated to pull it dry and with no extra weight of any kind other than a dog as company.

      Great comment Lyndel. It's great to hear that you know exactly what your truck can and cannot do. Too often it seems people don't know those important details. As you will see from our other videos I stress "know your vehicle." We had a Sierra 1500 at one time and with our tow package we were at 9800 max.

      People often over look the pin weight on fifth wheel RV's that can put you over your truck GVWR even before you hit your max tow capacity. I have seen very very few fifth wheels that could be classified as truly half ton towable with good safety margins.

    • @retiresoon5639
      @retiresoon5639 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes you may be correct but they market these things like any half ton will pull them and it just isn't so.
      Up until the 2018 models ford did not have this high of a tow rating on the f150. Chevy also has a tow rating of over 12000 for the 1500 silverado with the heavy duty tow package but does not have a payload rating high enough to handle this rig loaded with anything left for gear and passengers. this RV has an almost 1700 pound pin weight dry. That is without propane or batteries or the weight of your hitch in the bed. People don't think about all these little details. Start adding all the stuff for camping and all of a sudden you are over loaded. Sure people pull them every day but they are not legal and if anything was to happen it would be their ass. I could throw some bags on my truck and pull it. I have the same motor that the other silverados have with the heavy duty tow package. My rear end is not rated for that weight though.

    18,000 miles coast to coast Flagstaff 32' fifth wheel. Loaded up and 1/2 tank of fresh water comes in at 9400 lbs.. 2008 Tundra with Rancho Shocks and air bags. Not a minutes trouble with truck. It pulls grade very well and braking with controller is solid. Like others below said I would not pull a fifth wheel with the other half tons because of the pin weights and braking. Sure they can pull it, but going down a 8% grade in the Rockies with a F-150 and 5 ton behind you is not something I'd recommend. Tundra is listed as 3/4 ton on my title. It's a heavy half ton

    Let's keep it simple for me. The owner's manual for a Chevy 2013 4 door 2wd , rear end, etc.. configured is max 9600 pounds with 1710 pounds in the bed for a Fifth Wheel. I read this and contacted a Chevy specialist through OnStar and verified this even though he was in India or Pakistan I guess. Is it safe to say that I could tow 8900 pounds dry with 1500 in the bed for 100 or 200 mile trips a few times a year and not a lot of towing in the mountains as long as the max weight is not exceeded?
    If I beef up the rear end suspension could I tow this 5th Wheel not going over the 9600 and 1710 rating. One video said the engine is not the weak link but suspension is ??

      The question was not how much the truck can tow I know that. It was how much weight with the truck could be safely towed. I would not tow 9200 pounds but 8600 I would think would be safe and put air bags for the suspension. I do not want to push the limit.
      Now as for your derogatory comments and your picture with your rifle.... I shoot a Glock 34 and 19 both G4's with Zev and Vogle triggers. I have shot competitively in IDPA and have had training sessions with the world champion Bob Vogle. In 1.4 seconds I can draw from the holster and place 2 shots to the head or center of mass at 25 yards. Google Bob Vogle on TH-cam. So that is plenty quick and accurate shooting from one end of your double wide to the other.

Part of it is Lippert components are junk, part of it is Keystones quality control is non-existant and part of it is the assembly people ( NOT craftsman or skilled ) apparently have no assembly experience.
    After dropping $40k I expected something built with much better quality. If anyone had paid $40,000 for a car and had the number of past and ongoing problems, there would be a lawsuit.
    I have seriously thought about selling it, taking the loss, and buy something else NOT made by Keystone.

  • @maxcorder2211
    @maxcorder2211 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just because a manufacturer takes some paint and writes "Half Ton" on the trailer, that doesn't make it reality.
    Here are the specs on this 29RKS from the Cougar website: Dry weight- 8,801 lbs.; Carrying Capacity- 1,599 lbs. GVWR - 10,400 lbs. Hitch weight- 1,605 lbs.
    I have a 2019 GMC Sierra. It is very typical of most short-box half-ton crew cab trucks. It has a payload of 1,700 pounds and a towing capacity of 12,100 pounds and a Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating of 15,000. After I put fuel, passengers, a couple of dogs, a super-slider hitch (which I have to have due to the short box), and some miscellaneous camping equipment in the truck, this Cougar will exceed my payload capacity and my GVWR by over 800 pounds, and my GCVWR by 1,700 pounds.
    If they advertise "half-ton towable", dealers have an obligation to tell their customers exactly what half-ton truck can safely tow this rig. In my opinion, unless the dealer and the customer understand and correctly calculate the payload and other ratings of the combined truck and 5th wheel trailer, there is a good risk that these limits will be exceeded. I have looked at this issue extensively, as I had to obtain a return of my deposit on a smaller Cougar 5th wheel after being misinformed by a salesman. I went through the numbers before closing on the deal, but the salesman continued to insist that "It would pull just fine because he knew someone with a truck like mine who just bought the same trailer". Yes, the truck could "pull" the trailer as it is within the "towing capacity" of the truck. That's not the issue. The issue is whether or not the combined rig is within ALL limtiations that the particular truck was manufactured to handle. Based on my research, there is a risk that the truck's warranty could be affected, the truck's insurance could be affected in case of an accident, and if a state patrol happens to inspect the rig, there could be additional trouble. I decided that it was not worth the risk.
