The best running joke on Coming to America is that everyone around Eddie Murphy swears and Eddie Murphy can't. They took away what he was famous for at the time and it made the character all the better. Boundaries spark creativity.
Legit surprised that it was Ebert who didn't like Coming To America and Siskel who was championing it because given what i know about their tastes it feels like it should be the other way around with Ebert championing the sweet natured love story that became a huge audience pleasing hit and Siskel saying that he would've preferred there to be more of an edge to it. (LIke just when i think i can start to predict what each one is gonna say, they end up completing flipping the script on me here! I love it!)
Seems to me that Roger wanted Coming To America to be more like Beverley Hills Cop, where a guy comes from Detroit to Beverley Hills, and he has an "edge" to him because he has more street smarts than the Beverley Hills residents. But the thing is, Roger hated Beverley Hills Cop. So not sure what he wanted Coming To America to be. 🤣
I love how the opening sequence of the show is a fever dream of everything in the city of Chicago going their way instead of them being ignored or laughed at for being film geeks.
On Coming to America Roger tries to go all feminist but the entire reason he came to America was to find a woman who he could respect and who didn't just serve him all the time. Talk about an ill aimed objection. There is the entire scene at the beginning of how silly it was for his prepared queen to be willing to bark like a dog. This is the entire premise of the movie.
When Ebert messes up It sticks out like a sore thumb because he's on point so much of the time. Maybe Ebert was just having a bad day or something because he blew It on a movie you just think would be right up his alley with Coming To America.
I can't believe what I'm hearing! (Coming To America) Ebert got this one so wrong! Lmao It's now probably on a list of top 50 funniest films of all time!
CtA really didn't need an edge. The film was clearly a homage to Howard Hawks' romcoms and adding that Murphy raw nerve would have spoiled the whole movie.
@@nicholashill7202 Not the best Eddie Murphy film. But I will say this Louie Anderson from Life with Louie and former Family Feud host passed away this year. So R.I.P Louie.
Nah mate it depends on what you're looking for Short circuit is a slow origin story with some jokes on the side, the second is a quippy, more satirical comedy
Short Circuit 2 really is the better movie. It's funnier and edgier -- the scene where Number 5 is almost beaten to death by someone he thought was his friend, is genuinely terrifying and heartbreaking. Number 5's battery fluids splattering on Oscar's henchman like blood as they pound on him with a crowbar and an axe is a really visceral scene. And the song "i need a hero" during the climax totally slaps.
It's a better written and directed movie. Much better effects. No annoying Allly Sheedy. Ben is more of an actual character and less of a stereotype like in the first. Michael McKean is better than Steve Guttenberg, has more interaction with Johnny 5, and an arc to his character. There are more moments that make you feel for Johnny 5 especially when he's attacked by the thugs. The musical score is solid. So yeah. Short Circuit 2 is miles better than the original which was an average at best movie
No mention of tanning a white guy to play an Indian scientist in Short Circuit 2. That's like double or triple racism/sterotyping. I swear this is what RDJ's character is based on in Tropic Thunder.
That kind of thing just wasn’t considered so grotesque back then, likely because the Short Circuit movies were never that popular enough for people to really care. There were also hardly any characters of South Asian descent in Hollywood at that time. If anything, most Americans of South Asian descent at that time likely would have just been happy to have had any sort of presence in American movies or television. It’s different now because Bollywood and it’s stars have become more internationally known. Plus, plenty of Americans of South Asian descent have had success in Hollywood as well.
Johnny 5 is not a creature. You are not as smart as you think. I don't believe in shaming people. That's up to themselves. But you didn't get it. Critics are idiots anyway
Ebert and Siskel temporarily switched personalities when they reviewed Coming to America !
Very well noticed. I saw your comment before i watched that part and it's so true lol. The best is when one likes a film and other thinks it's bad
I kinda agree with Ebert on Coming to America.
It’s still a charming, but it’s just not my thing anymore
The best running joke on Coming to America is that everyone around Eddie Murphy swears and Eddie Murphy can't. They took away what he was famous for at the time and it made the character all the better. Boundaries spark creativity.
It still didn’t make Coming To America any less predictable and gimmicky.

I agree. That was a strange outcome.
Majority of the time, I'm with Siskel's opinion.
I was going to say the same thing.
I love how Gene's review gets more feverish toward the conclusion of his part to sell the film because he knows Roger is about to wipe his ass on it.

Thanks for uploading all these man. Really wish a streaming service out there would add the complete run.
The person I'll be got these from siskelandebert.org, a website with all the shows.
It is such a surprise Ebert didn't like Coming to America.
It’s because it’s predictable and gimmicky.
Licence to drive is a great teen movie.
Siskel’s review of License to Drive is an affront to decency.
Id be afraid too if Shredder and Uncle Phil was my Driver's Ed instructor.
I'm so glad that I saw Coming to America before this video. That they divulge that Murphy played the Jewish man is a total spoiler.
It’s obvious the moment you see him
Even with the rose colored glasses off...I miss the damn 80s.
That driver's test bit in License To Drive is fucking hilarious, though.
RIP to that driving instructor.
Ebert gave a shout-out to Uncle Phil.
He wasn't yet that character. This was before Fresh Prince premiered two years later.
So let your Sooooul Gloow!!

How did he miss that? In fact "Coming to America" has a mild feminist message.
It was still cartoonish at best.

Love License to drive. Heather Graham.....Yum
Nonsense...."License to Drive" is the best film here.
I am amazed it was shown at cinemas actually. A low budget B movie. Direct to video material.
@@drumtum I agree. Funny how I liked the movie. But, as a twelve year old then, what did I know?
A thumbs up to Roger’s jacket...way up
Short Circuit 2 better than original? Nice to know Siskel and Ebert give smoking crack 2 thumbs up.
The original Short Circuit is average at best. The sequel improved upon it in every possible way
Ebert did emphasize that it still wasn’t necessarily a good movie like the original. The less predictable plot did help.
Siskel was right here.
I'm kind of surprised they disagreed on Coming to America. Lord knows what they would've thought of the sequel.
They would have likely found the sequel even more predictable.
@@RocStarr913 That's what I was imagining. I can picture Gene Siskel going off on this movie about how the movie was dated upon release.

Spot on you're right ✅️
Except it ISN'T.
That doesn’t mean it’s a very good movie overall.
Coming to America is better than Trading Places
Johan Öberg I prefer Trading Places
Nah, Trading Places is better.
Not even close.
No way!! CTA is good, but no way near TP.
Disagree. I love trading places.
Thumbs up for A Handful of Dust.
Ebert's reasoning could be bizarre at times.
I need Roger's suit.
Ebert is sooooooo off on Coming to America! You kidding me?
Coming to America, Short circuit 2 & handful of dust are great. Coming to America would be better if it had a edge to it.
CtA really didn't need an edge. The film was clearly a homage to Howard Hawks' romcoms and adding that Murphy raw nerve would have spoiled the whole movie.
I give these guys the 👎🏽 so often. So it warms my heart that they actually liked Short Circuit 2, a childhood favourite of mine.
They didn’t necessarily say it was a good movie.
Damn, Ebert was way off on this one.
Seems he liked License to drive more than Coming to America. Hilarious!
Ebert's review on license to drive is spot on what I alwsys thought. First hour is funny, but once they axtaully get driving, it's terrible.
All this time I thought Coming to America was great, but Ebert said it sucked soooo
Wow, Ebert was way off on Coming to America.
The fact that they thought that short circuit was trying to be like ET… Pretty much tells you all you need to know about the way they look at things…
Well, it obviously was in many ways.
