    This was very helpful. I am a mechanic, but never worked on this system before. My problem is the small shaft is not moving (just a little). From watching your video I will pull her down & check what the problem might be. My Blazer is a 1983 model & I am living in the Philippines, so you see parts may be a problem. I figured this S10 blazer belonged to the military or someone in the military brought it over & thru the years got out in the public. Thanks for your time!

    I have a 2000 S10 LS 4x4, front axel won't engage. Thought the TC switch was sticky so already swapped it, transfer case functions but no power transfer to wheel. This is a great video for a guy like me just to open everything up and inspect components.

Thanks again. And to those with your 4wd control blinking then turning off its more than likely yur Tranfer Case switch motor. You can ground the #13 pin on your OBDII connector and the switch will flash the code. Their are only 4 codes and easy to look up on Google.

    This is a great video. I have just made one explaining how to ditch the electric shift motor on the transfer case on my 99 Blazer. Its called (Fix GM electric 4x4 permanently & CHEAP) It will show you a dirt simple way to save $hundreds$ of $dollars$ on shifting you transfer case into and out of its ranges. Its free information and I want all the people like me who have been stranded because of this overly complicated GM Junktronic. Not that the vehicle is junk but the electric shift is. Anyway hopefully my idea will save people thousands of dollars and for most make their 4x4 totally dependable.

    Thanks for your response and "good luck". Question if I may ask: My actuator cable is fine. 4 wheel drive did work some months ago (just purchased 2000 S10 truck, great condition) then stopped, no grinding, no noises. Pulled cable from actuator (vacuum line disappeared, gone from actuator. Burned through touching exhaust pipe and think tire ran it over and pulled it off). I made a split sleeve, pulled cable to full extension, hose clamped it and nothing. I can spin front drive shaft freely. I am waiting for differential kit to come. Does this sound like the problem or am I going to waist time with what you did in your video? Appreciate any insight. Thanks in advance.

    • @TerenceDIY
      @TerenceDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Keith, I highly doubt you have the same issue as me. Mine grinded for quite a while before it completely stopped working. When you press the 4-wheel drive button, does the light continuously blink or does it function properly? Also, it's funny that you are mentioning this, because my 99 Tahoe just did the same thing. The four wheel drive stopped working out of nowhere. I believe I snapped an axle. I won't be able to tell for sure until I get under it in a few days but I am almost positive. If one of the axles are snapped, the other one will not function in which will disable the 4-wheel drive. Also, is there anyway you can see if your front drive shaft engages when you press the 4-wheel drive button? That will help a lot if I knew this. I'm just trying to rule out if you are having an issue at the transfer case. Thanks, Terence

    • @keithpanzer3099
      @keithpanzer3099 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TerenceDIY thanks again for getting back so quick as I'm spending all kinds of money getting prepared for this little venture. This switch was non-functional and it was a strange thing because it was a contact issue where I would need a special tool to push the pins through or possibly a cold solder joint. What corrected the problem was ever so light pressure on the back plate of the four wheel drive switch so I drilled a clearance hole and a small tap hole and put a wood screw through and just put pressure on it and it's been fine. Typical backyard mechanic. You can hear very clearly four wheel High and four wheel low when you push the button the relay works on the passenger side and you can feel the engagement of the transfer case. That was the first thing I checked. with it in two-wheel drive I can freely spend the front axle excuse me front drive shaft when I engage in four wheel low or high it locks that short front drive shaft. When I pull the actuator cable to its fullest and lock it there's nothing the drive shaft does not engage. I never heard anything snap or go nuts and I'm kind of new to the four-wheel drive stuff as far as repair. I'm an air-cooled VW past Motorhead as I had a machine shop and clearance the case with the program I wrote for 2174 160 horsepower 71 Super beetle, show car and was right on the edge of buying a Pauter short block for 14,000 that would produce 350 horsepower but a lot of mods to the already finished car had to be done and divorce happened. That's a lot of personal information but that's my background mechanically and I race quarter midgets and have my hand on many tractor engines diesel. So I don't know what I'm going to find when I finally get into this the last thing on my list and having some tight financial issues is that beautiful tool you used right angle impact wrench or maybe just a wrench as I can snap them loose and then use it to get the screws out better in difficult area. Again thanks this was lengthy thanks for taking the time to read and answering my questions you've been a great help.

      Hey Terence. Finally a great day in PA for this job. Started late, work, but I'm hung up. Can't seem to get the clearance to pull the splined axle out completely out of the wheel bearing. Took the tie rod off still not enough. Upper ball joint & control arm were replaced few months back & only drivers side lower ball joint. My mechanic said it was a bear. Is my only option now to remove passenger side lower ball joint? Am i missing something? Can the axle tube be removed to try and gain some clearance? Appreciate your help. Thanks

      Hi Keith, did you remove the passenger side upper ball joint? Please let me know. Thanks,

      @@TerenceDIY Hello & literally just ,"FINISHED"!!
      Upper, lower ball joints, tie rod, brake caliper and just for the hell of it the shock at the bottom only. My eBay Milwaukee impact wrench was a little lame but it managed to get things apart. It's all back together the four wheel drive gear was torn up but now it engages and I'm waiting for the posi lock kit to come cuz I'm not doing that vacuum stuff anymore! I started at 9:00 it's after 3:00 it's about 1 2° out and I can feel my 61 year old knees. Thanks for getting back it is a bit of a job but I'm getting more familiar with my vehicle. Take care of my friend.

    Can I just remove the axles and run it permanently in 2wd, or do they hold the hub assembly together?

    • @TerenceDIY
      @TerenceDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi MontanaMuzach, I don't the truck will run properly if you do that. Not only will you get all sorts of trouble codes, but there will be an imbalance within the drivetrain.Thanks, Terence

      I asked because my 4wd was engaged, I didn't know it, and drove 100 miles on the highway before hearing a bang. Not sure if the diff is toast or what. Makes bad noises now, and the shaft from the t case to the front diff spins freely. I don't drive it now, but hoping for a cheap, less labor intensive way to get it back on the road and don't really need 4wd.

    What fluid would you put back into your transfer case?

    • @TerenceDIY

      Hi, below is the link to the fluid that I would use... Once you drain it, you will need about 2.4 quarts to refill it.

      Hi Sam, sorry for the late reply. The grinding does sound like it is coming from that area. And, most likely it is (common issue). As far as parts, this was some time ago however, I believe I managed to get them for a little over $100. Thanks for watching!

      This was the perfect vid .. It is also the steps needed to remove the oil pan .. The whole axle must be removed including the diff.. By removing the center link (a must) and the oil pan is easy from there

    • @TerenceDIY

      Hi Daniel, the grinding sound is from the worn down gear not able to engage. It sounds like metal binding together and you'll hear some clicking at times. It's really difficult to explain, but you can definitely tell the gears are grinding.

    Or just get rid of all that and put a bravada or astro van axle and axle tube in. This does not apply to the bravada they were all wheel drive and had a one piece axle.
