I didn’t really consider anything in this movie a jumpscare…? Maybe it’s just because I have a very high tolerance for horror and usually “jumpscares” just annoy me and take me out of the movie entirely, but this never happened to me while watching Hereditary. Like, I startle pretty easy, but that’s not scary, ya know? I never once jumped or startled while watching it, even in those moments when the quiet is interrupted by a sound. It was never loud and obnoxious. But still, I was as tense as hell throughout. And I think that’s part of why jumpscares suck, they break the tension.

For me, the most disturbing part of this movie is the intense grief. The screaming when the mother finds the daughter, her WAILING afterwards saying “it hurts too much”….. I just can’t. It’s so raw and truly installs a feeling of horror in me. Like…. The trauma. I never want to have to experience something similar for real.
Desecrated basically means messed up or vandalized, but in the case of a grave it usually means the body was dug up and taken. So here it meant that the grandma’s body was missing, which is how it ended up in the attic

just in case no one else has said: the grandmother initiated a sacrifice, a trinity of female generations (herself, her daughter and granddaughter charliie). it is an inversion of the male holy trinity from the Bible. the cult is in the film the entire time, from the grandmother's funeral, the school, the houseparty, the group therapy. they are all playing as regular people carefully watching, making sure things go according to the planned ritual; from digging up the grave and placing the grandmother's corpse to that outside area encircled in fire and then in the attic. the three beheadings are also part of the sacrifice. if you read again the note annie reads in the beginning from the grandmother you can understand it better in light of this info. the grandmother interfered with charlie and bound king paimon to charlie. so charlie was also possessed the whole time we see her. she also tried to get her son possessed by him too but he committed suicide. yes, twisted
