    The reason for putting up tarp on arrival is
    to give a group dry area
    To ensure the gear outside is protected
    To provide some weather cover
    Mostly, it’s a thing to set up then have one or all of you tinker with to try to figure where the water should drip.
    Nothing is wrong with that, everyone needs a hobby and a tarp is worth it when appropriate

    I use bungee cords, cheating but quick set up for tarp. Tie guys with several loops in to corners of tarp so you have adjustment. Easy to adjust dependent on weather.

    Tarp' needs a centre or off centre pole if it's set high up. A pyramid.
    Set it out square & use a branch (padded at the top with fleece) in the centre, to tighten it all up.
    Job done.

    Happy New Year, Paul.
    For some reason, I love camping in the winter. Maybe it's the sound of the rain on the tent. 😬
    I went out on a solo overnight last night, the wind was pumping I couldn't even light a fire for dinner and had to settle for snacks instead.
    This morning I could enjoy my cheese grillers and eggs at least.
    Thanks for this video and all your effort.

    Also, I'm quite interested in bags/quilts at the minute and it seems like comfort/movement is a big selling point that's difficult to read about. I (think I) recall in a previous video you also had a Sierra Designs Cloud. If you get stuck for ideas it would be great to hear a bit more about bag pros and cons. Essentially as both this Rab and the SDcloud seem to suggest quilt-ish advantages.

    Gorgeous woodland that mate and an ideal area for a good hammock camp judging by the amount of trees that are spread out.
    Yeah, I tend to just use 5 knots but like you say if you don't practice them they easily slip from mind.
    Some top food cooked up for the evening meal Paul and time too with the sausage in a morning is a must isn't it.
    I do also like that sleeping bag, ones I've had in the past are hard work, you tend to be wrapped up in them and can't find the zip to get out. Santa brought me the amazing Alpkit 600 which I am loving. Its definitely something I know I can trust on a cold night.

    After watching Tony's vids for a while I keep meaning to try the tent and tarp combo but when I'm in the woods I usually bring the hammock. i'm thinking about adding third pole to the tie chee 2 hehe, across the doors kind of angle, and maybe even doubling up on the two main poles, not so much to make it more bomb proof, but simply to make it less bendy in medium gusts. i wonder if anybody has designed a tent that is two stage collapsable for when the wind is gonna flatten any tent, an emergency mode to get through the night.

    As somebody who has made the same mistake more times than I’d care to admit, I winced when you put the Trangia out at the end there with the gasket-sealed cap instead of the simmer ring. It’s just a cheap o-ring replacement and no big deal (and I tend not to keep fuel in the burner anyway), but I always beat myself up about it.

    • @PaulMessner
      @PaulMessner  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always take the o-ring out if I need to use the cap to extinguish the flame. I’ve shown me doing that in previous videos. It’s a fair comment to point out for people though 👍🏻

    • @justinmarrington8039
      @justinmarrington8039 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PaulMessner Ah, fair. Sorry to assume 😅. Do you prefer the cap for extinguishing, out of curiosity? (I've definitely noticed that in breezy conditions with a strong flame it can be...difficult...to make the simmer ring actually snuff the flame).
