    Stravinsky himself was unable to play this work -- which he transcribed for solo piano for Arthur Rubinstein -- because he did not have the left hand technique. This performance by Ms. Wang is phenomenal. But not, in my opinion, as good as that of Maurizio Pollini: th-cam.com/video/pTW8lIB3hI8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5cehjF0tm2nRaisC

    Bravo! She absolutely captures the Russian flavour and rhythm. This is even better than some two piano versions I've heard. Almost superhuman, not just technique but SO musical too. Stravinsky would have been very impressed I'm sure.

      The one piano transcription is often almost identical to the original two piano version (at least for the first movement), in several places it actually has more notes.

    The piano version is not intended to sound like the full orchestra, because it can't. Playing this, the player can "feel" the rhythm through the attack on the keys; it's about motion, how the piano sounds playing tone clusters and dissonance. It's supposed to sound like a piano playing an orchestral piece. Her version here, is simply outstanding!

    As an avid music listener, I can easily say that Yuja Wang is the best pianist in the scene in terms of rhythmic capabilities. I have seen no other as competent as Yuja Wang in this realm. Since, the modern piano is a rhythm instrument in its origins, she is really aware of the fact that this instrument should be played in this respect. Her performance on one and only Stravinsky’s Petruschka’s Russian Dance is simply enchanting and highly unique. Most likely, his father affected her feelings of rhythm very much, inasmuch as he is a concert percussionist. I consider Yuja Wang as my favorite classical pianist in the world right now. I admire her every work. Such a versatile musician. Influential. I want to thank Ms. Yang for everything she did for the cultural heritage of music. I hope I can meet her one day. Long story short, she is one of the best pianists I have ever listened throughout the entire music history. And few of the bests, maybe the best, in terms of rhythmic performance.

    Because I live in San Francisco, I get to see Yuja play frequently, including seeing her play this piece last fall at her recital. Incredible! The music director here, Michael Tilson Thomas, has a great connection with her and, in fact, she stays at his house when she is in town. She played with the orchestra last weekend and, along with the scheduled performance, she played a solo encore of a short, jazzy upbeat piece that he wrote specifically for her. Great moment at the concert hall. I count myself lucky. She is phenomenal.

    I studied this for O level in 1969. Hated it for the first two weeks (I was 14.) Afterwards became obsessed with it. Now, I'm a boring old fart of 62. Here is Yuja Wang playing the piano's socks off, and rekindling my love for it once again. But here's the worst bit. Why was Miss Wang not there when I was a lad?! I'd have had pictures of her everywhere. One on my bedroom wall. Legitimately of course, with the legend "Now go and practice" at the bottom of the poster.

    Decades ago after hearing the Piano version played by Pollini I was unable to hear the Orchestra version for years. A few years back I rekindled a love for the Orch version, thanks to Fiore, but on the piano, Pollini has been all alone until now! Several works that I thought I knew too well in too many versions have yet again come to life for me in her interpretations.

    Extraordinary performance. Yuja's techhnique is remarkable - speed, accuracy, evenness, clarity, dynamics - all with seemingly ease. She creates huge power in the final section (13:01), so much so that it sounds like an orchestra playing.

      Right on the mark!!! Definitely about relaxation and even more importantly isolation. We pianists somehow have to find a way to instantly isolate and flex specific muscle groups while relaxing other muscle groups so we can easily transition which muscles are being used within a split secon and some muscles aren't even used at all, she clearly has perfect relaxation which probably means she has a steel mind as well. (Some people are blessed with super fast nerve signals too)

    Yuja is both the reason why I keep playing, and the reason why I sometimes feel like quitting because I will never be THAT good.
    I've seen many, many performances of Trois Mouvements de Petrouchka, both recorded and live. It is considered THE virtuoso capstone of the standard repertoire. Stravinsky's writing is ingenious, going beyond the glorious pianistic effects of the Romantics like Liszt and Rachmaninoff and exhibiting a totally new and innovative technique. The piano sparkles and glitters as if bursting into color. The energy is boundless and infectious, the tunes and brilliant characterizations instantly memorable, and the sheer athleticism is exhilarating. Yuja lives up to the piece's reputation and brings an imagination and vision that I haven't heard from anyone else. Her technical chops allow her interpretation to stamp on this piece in a way that no one else can match. There is so much to love in this fabulous performance, and I could harp on it for hours, but I had to listen again several times at 11:15 when there is an extra line woven into the LH so beautifully and seamlessly.

This is why I love Glenn Gould's work, he doesn't show his emotion he shows the emotion of the maker of the piano piece.

    In the time this video has been up, it deserves 150 MILLION hits, not 150 thousand.
    I completely disagree with Johnny Cashe's comments. I've heard several different orchestral recordings as well as several on the piano. The only thing I can guess is that Cashe thinks the piano should sound just like an orchestra. The piano can do things an orchestra can not, and vice versa. Furthermore, what comes before and after 8:58 is different in this arrangement by Stravinsky -- who was a pianist himself. To copy an orchestra in tempo, phrasing and dynamics would be misguided and MUSICALLY DISASTROUS!
    This recording is stunning, beyond the pale genius. Music flows from her every pore. I fear for Wang's ability to keep a level head in the face of remarks like that, but it's true.

    Stunning is a weak adjective.

    @Carborundumkid Quite honestly, I've never heard this piece played quite like Ms. Wang here. I never fully appreciated this piece until I experienced Wang's interpretation here and in concert. Her sensitivity and control give it many vivid layers and colors, which I failed to find in other versions. Of course I've heard Pollini. But it's not fair to compare such different interpretations from such different times.

    I've listened to other performances-- 2 by Weissenberg, others by pianists I can't recall right now, and this. I like Wang's performance quite a lot. I'm most accustomed to the (1970?) Weissenberg LP but each version has its own magical moments. There aren't many recordings of this Petrushka. Wang pleases me. If we compare this Petruska video with that of Weissenberg I have to say that (even though the production value is crude by comparison) I like this one better. Listening without the video each is splendid, rollicking, fun.

    I tried to learn this 40 years ago and gave up after a couple months. I HEARD ONE FUMBLE Yuja, hah! I'm petty out of pure jealousy.
    People who want to "hear" this music should listen to a great orchestra play it, then get hold of Rubinstein's recording. The piano version was written for him.
    I always thought the stories about Mozart were apocryphal, but after listening to Wang and seeing her very early recordings, I realize such freaks of nature really exist. We must all pray that she draws as much personal satisfaction from her talent as the rest of us do -- those of us with ears to hear.

      Do you happen to know where I can find that Rubinstein recording you're talking about? I had heard Stravinsky wrote the piano version with the hope of Rubinstein playing it (successfully, apparently), but haven't been able to find a recording so far. If you have a link, please message me so I can finally listen to it!

    • @rickideemus
      @rickideemus 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      swordchucks4life I guess Rubinstein never recorded it. I heard it on WFMT as a child and it left a deep impression. I just assumed... But it must have been live, or somebody else's recording of a live performance.

    • @RolfKyburz
      @RolfKyburz 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      swordchucks4life Rubinstein has indeed not officially recorded this, but he has played the piece in concerts. The "Arthur Rubinstein - The Complete Album Collection" (142 CDs, 2 DVDs) includes a live recording from Carnegie Hall in 1961. But don't hold your breath - his performance is not comparable to Yuja's, nor Pollini's, Béroff's, or Weissenberg's: at the age of 74, his technique and power are still amazing, but I don't think he still had the power to differentiate in this music (most of his performance is fff ... fffff), plus he may be playing a slightly different version.

      rickideemus I play it. 😃 learnt it in 4 months from memory.
      But I can guarantee it's not half as good as Yuja Wang's version. 😕

    Absolutely unheard-of and novel. I thought that the best interpretation of this hairy piece was by Maurizio Pollini in 1971, superseding the legendary take of Alexis Weissenberg in the 1960s.
    It seems that there is no limit to Yuja's pianistic abilities. She is a true pianistic genius!

      Corrado Grandis Thanks, dear friend, following up to my musical comments a bit, there are many. And your English is perfect:) But if you like, you can comment in Italian as well. I am very much criticized by some hard-core guys from Europe who think they have all the knowledge-you will see when you look at more of my comments. But never mind:)
