    Davie has got to be the best "dubber" of any of the best modern fly tiers . Always a pleasure to watch you dub flies.

    Hi Davie, we haven't touched bases for years, but thank you for bringing this one to the forefront, it's gorgeous!! I think I'll dig out an old hook and do it proper!

    Another work of art Davie. As a kid, I was captivated by Jack Hargreaves Out of Town. You need your own TV programme. Would benefit kids and help get them off mobile phones and back into the Great Outdoors.

    Davie, Gorgeous fly, I am going to attempt one tomorrow. I have to use seals fur, don't have pigs wool. I have everything else so it should be fun to tie. I am sure yours will come out looking much better but I will give it my all to get it as close as I can. You are so good at tying flies, I am sure you could probably do better with your eyes closed, but I am learning from the best and will do my best at it. Thanks for sharing your skill and patience. That is what has been even harder than proportion to learn. Take your time!
    All the best to you and your family. God Bless, Sean

      +Davie McPhail Got some pigs wool and dyed it myself! and now I am going to tie another one. The wings gave me a fit on the first. So I cut two more slips and did exactly what you did. It worked! So going to tie one with pigs wool. It sure is expensive now! Just wanted a couple of the old style for myself. All the best, Sean

    The more I look at Dee flies, the more I like them. I would think they offered more movement in the water wouldn't they? What do you feel is the big difference Davie?

      HiMrBwukBwuk,
      Just use what you have, and yes these feathers would do fine as I have used them to tye smaller versions...I'm glad you liked the fly..

    Hi mr. McPhail. Always a pleasure watching you tie a salmon fly. Can you tell me the major difference between a dee and spey fly? Thank you for your time. And what is your favorite river for atlantic salmon?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HiDominique LeBlanc,
      Dee flies are very similar to Speys but the main difference is that the Dee flies were tied on longer hooks and were tied with bright coloured dubbed bodies and turkey wings and the Speys were tied with berlin wool bodies in black, olives and purple and with wings of bronze mallard.. I do like the River Doon as this was the water I've fished mostly and flowed from the village I was born so it means a lot to me, other waters I like are the Stinchar, Girvan and the Ayr all waters I enjoy fishing..Another water which I love fishing is the river Clyde which has the best hatches of fly you can see and fish...

    Once again a beautiful pattern. I didn't see you use any wax. Was that on purpose? Also could angora goat be a reasonable substitute for pig wool? Many thanks! Chuck

      Hi Chuck,
      I motor on when tying at times and forget to use it as I'm too busy making sure the sound and the footage is ok..I'm glad you liked the fly and Angora would be fine as well...

    Watched this one again. I love the style of fly. Do you know of any books showing different flies in the Dee style? I would love to tie some of the classics. I probably won't fish them unless they come out badly for display. All the best to you and yours. Sean

    Hey Mr. Mcphail
    Can I tie this in smaller sizes like a 8? Or would it be goofy with the long hackle? Perhaps I can sub ringneck rump?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Colbee,
      I've tyed these flies done to a size 12 and used normal hackles and they work just as well, the rump feather would be perfect for many sizes like an 8..

    Hi Davie. I keep having the issue of my turkey wing splitting apart at the tips as I tie it. Driving me nuts. I've tried pre-treating them with head cement but it still looks crap. What can you suggest? Thanks.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jamie Pringle,
      You could write a book on this as there's many reasons for this to happen. I always find that the finer the fibres are the better to use as they are less likely to separate or split, also tying on an uneven layer of thread and hackle will also cause the wing to flare and split as I make sure that there's enough room for the wing..
      I hope this helps you in some way...
      All the very best Davie

    You didn’t need wax on the thread for this fly

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Robert,
      Sometimes when I'm filming I forget to lift the wax so I just keep going though I would recommend using the wax especially when tying the hackle, Jungle cock and wing on as it will help a lot..
