The only time I use an alarm is for early appointments. Like tomorrow morning! The window for my gas meter replacement is from 8 to 12 and I usually get up at 7:30, hence the need to for an alarm tomorrow. Very important to wind down before bed. I read for a couple of hours so glad to hear you are figuring out what works for you. Stress is usually about things that will happen in the future so focus on the present as much as you can and stay in the moment. I also find working with your hands gets you out of your head…like hand stitching. Sleep well. 🌟❤️ 😴
I'm with you on the positive changes! I have the exact same sleep issues. I am a night owl...always have been...and it is SO hard for me to go to sleep at a "normal" hour. I understand that stress you can have when you have a scheduled appointment as well. If I know that I have an appointment at noon next Wednesday, I immediately start stressing about having to go to bed early the night before, sleep, and try to feel human for the appointment. It is brutal! The stress normally makes me not be able to go to sleep the night before and I end up either taking something to help me sleep, which give me the "hangover" feeling the next day...or not sleeping much at all and feeling horrible the next day. Lose-Lose. I hope you can get your sleep schedule worked out to suit your needs! I am trying to de-stress my life. I am in the middle of a 14 day "semi-vacation". I have to do a certain amount of cooking and cleaning, etc., but I am working on a "must needs" basis. I am trying to sleep more and get a better quality of sleep, stop obsessing over every single thing in my life, etc. I am trying to spend more time reading and taking care of myself. I've begun to have some health issues and I think they stem from years of loads of stress and resulting high cortisol levels. I hope both of us succeed in achieving our goals!
I pray strength for you until all is worked out. You've taken on a lot in a short time. Not that it helps much, but we are all here for you, praying for you and routing you on to the peace that you so much deserve. Blessings to you.
Hello- I am also from Canada. I am starting a whole new chapter of freedom as I retired Dec 31 st and I too am trying to start a new schedule now that the stress of work has finally been removed from my life. I plan to rekindle my love of music and teach. It has been about 10 years since I last played. I also garden and that is how I found you. 😊
Henry V! My favourite! I got into the habit of keeping a journal many years ago at work. It helped me keep track of home and school and work and kids and bills as a young overwhelmed single mom trying to do it all. I always felt like I was failing miserably...... at everything. Those journals kept me sane even when I was drowning and not knowing if there was enough to buy milk and bread..... now, retired, My journal still supports me knowing when deposits will be made, what scheduled payments are due and how much, and appointments and the occasional lunch or dinner with my now middle aged children. This is a horribly stressful time for you, made doubly so by the staggering uncertainty of your pending sale and move. Here, 🇨🇦 you would have been long moved and settled. it seems a tortuously long business... and needlessly so. That said, Fingers crossed, you will soon get the official closed date, hand over those keys and notes to the new owner and take yourself off to a wonderland of paint, and taps, and fabrics with a new set of keys in your hand! 😁❤️ Just think, a few more short weeks and you will be getting up at 7:30 to putter in your garden or just feel the sun as you sit on the back step enjoying a hot cup of spicy apple tea!
Something on my “to do” is reading more. “Red skies at night.” It was on your bookshelf. When I have breakfast I read a chapter. Lovely read. You are doing great Vivi 🩷 Thoughtful suggestions X
Vivid you have done so much over the past few years that have impressed me. Give yourself credit. Most of those powerful rich guys can't even tell a weed from their own bum and you kept yourself fed on next by your own wits and grit.
Añn Cleeves books turned into dvds: Shetland & Vera. Hugh fan of both series. Listening to you today brought back my life in my 50s. I am now 77 and would never go back to what you are going through. A therapist started me on light therapy, easy to do & changed my life for ever. It was the greatest gift I ever gave to myself. I hope you find your way so every day struggles are manageable. 😊😊
Hi Vivi. I have had to step back as the Foster co-ordinator for the cat charity I volunteer for... my memory is so bad now I am unable to make and retain new memories.... I survived HSV2 Encephalitis in 2005 but I think the prolonged severe emotional distress from losing the Granddaughters has further impacted the memory issue. My boss has no sympathy or understanding and says things that make me feel like I am nothing... so.. I have stepped away but still fostering. I have decided that I need to look after me for a while without any unnecessary pressure so I am making sure I am getting enough rest and my goal now is to give myself good food... making a meal every evening, which I have not been doing. So far so good. Sending you lots of love xxxxx
It’s a challenge being self employed and working from home. It almost feels as though it’s a process one has to go through to eventually come out the other side, with some sort of epiphany. I worked too hard and like you, long hours that blurred and essentially I was having no time for myself or others. I became consumed by what I did. I eventually suffered burn out. It is serious. Mine lasted 3 years, and if I’m totally honest, I still haven’t recovered, creatively. What I have learned and stopped doing a long time ago is to stop measuring my day by productivity, but to measure it by how present I am. My mornings are slow, just for me. I cook my porridge on the hob and sit watching the garden birds feasting on the fatballs. I slowly brew a pot of coffee and let my mind wonder wherever it needs to. I shower, then begin my working day and finish by 5pm and have weekends off. I can now look back and I see that I felt as though I had something to prove, but to who? I equated busyness with success. However, I have now learned to care a little less. I will sit with my cat for an hour and not feel guilty or potter in the garden for 20 min. My whole outlook on ‘work’ has changed and I now see it as less of a priority. Of course consequently I have a little less money, but I make just enough… and that is enough. That is my choice and I’m relaxed and more content for it. Sending you a hug xx
Good on you lovely and I totally get what you mean.....but it's tricky when I don't earn enough in five days. Getting my evenings back is a big plus though. 😉
I understand that, especially with expense of the house move on the horizon. Thankfully, like you, I was a saver and squirrelled away to pay off my mortgage, which helped enormously 🌰. You’re definitely listening to instincts and your body and I love that! Good luck with the change of sleep routine 🤞🏻 xx
These sound like realistic changes/boundaries you are setting for yourself Vivi, like somebody else commented, I also hope that your bedroom might have potential to be a separate space for you in your new home in 🙏where you can really wind down in your sanctuary. Do you have a bolster or extra pillow to raise your legs in bed? You will know better than most how leg pain and raised cortisol make it v difficult to wind down of a night time. I set myself two hours every night of study for my pt degree in French as that is as long as my head can handle with language acquisition and after that I catch up on watching any favourite shows or TH-cam . Stroking my cat at night helps me sleep as the purring is v relaxing! I only read for fun on the bus to work but I did buy the book you recommended about the female explorers, really looking forward to getting stuck in! One day off a week for our Vivi, yayyyyyy! You've put it out there now!
Keep your spirits up Vivi. Moving is like wading through treacle! It will resolve one way or another:). You are amazingly steadfast. You will get there xx Definitely recommend some escapism through books, creativity and great series like Shetland :) Try Hinterland set in Wales too xx Love your musings on stress and the things you have been trying xx
Hi friend….don’t we always feel a bit better with some habit adjustments?! It’s a perfect time to do this. I enjoy Thomas Hardy but haven’t read that one yet. I may give it a go when I’m finished the book I’m in now (Circe). One day at a time. Take care.♥️🐇
Moving house is one of the most stressful times in a person's life, along with divorce and bereavement... and I blame working shift patterns for sleep problems. It's taken me ages since retirement for my sleep pattern to adjust... so stick to it Vivi it will all come right in the end. But both of these things for you must be so stressful at the moment... just remember it won't last for ever 😊
i think we are kindred spirits!! I could swop places with you ............- be your understudy! I know all the script! Its very hard isn't it? regards from NZ where we try to sleep many hours ahead which, come to think of it, time zones would make role swapping worrisome - I would be always late which would be stressful for you!!
Vivi, Here I sit in extreme northern Pennsylvania (it’s up to 13° f at mid day!) smiling at how much you enjoyed Shetland. Absolutely ! I’ve been away for a bit so maybe you’ve already mentioned Broadchurch at some point, but I found it to be in much the same vein as Shetland. Both are very Agatha Christie-style. About the sleeping thing… a doctor who visited patients on our floor dealt with complaints of trouble sleeping by instructing us to make sure the patient was up by 7:00 or so. And usually a couple mornings of that and they were ready to hit-the-hay early. To deal with this cold, I’ve been taking a 5 gallon covered bucket of very hot water out to put in the coop with an ancient little bantam hen. I change it out as it cools and she has learned to snuggle up beside it. We do what we can for the elderly…I hope someone brings me a hot water bottle! Oh, I just thought of Tony Walker Classic Ghost Stories. You might like his narrations. And thank you for letting me know about Far From The Madding Crowd DVD. I downloaded an old copy of the book from the Gutenberg Project complete with wonderful old illustrations. Good luck with the “habits”! Rick
Thank you lovely. Here's hoping for that hot water bottle! Mine is on the go all day. I didn't see Broadchurch but may have a look at it if I can find it on one of the free to view hubs - thank you. 😊
Viv, I think you’re very prudent to consciously reset your daily routine now you’re without an allotment directing you 11 of 12 mo each year. Most of us need a few boundaries and a routine to flourish.😉❤️
Well done on your routine Vivi, sounds like you are doing great. I simply cannot function without my daily to do list which is in a journal type book. Everything gets planned/written down even the simplest things and it really makes me feel organised and accomplished. x
Thanks, Vivi! This was very encouraging and very transferrable and. I hope you continue to do well by yourself! I'm starting the new year slowly, adding in new things gradually. Lots of anxiety where I live, but I'm trying to keep myself in good shape mentally and physically in order to deal with it the best I can.
Yes...old habits die hard... Love a good mystery book..what are your favorite authors?? Oh just LOVE Shetland, we are big fans of ALL the British crime/mystery shows we get on Brit box and Acorn 🤣
I love those teas... As I am watching I am drinking the digest..... delicious. and I double dip.... ( I use the bag twice ) .. I really hate it when all the problems that cause us issues are made by others...I have to remind myself of the serenity prayer at times like that... No use fretting if it's something you can't change ... I never make resolutions.... then it doesn't upset me if they fail... take things a day at a time. The appliances are a hiccup in the scheme of things.. and you are using them so enjoy their newness while you can. Sleep is a big issue I have lived in tiny apartments with the bed in the living space it's so difficult to switch off ...... I can't remember when I got more than 3 hours sleep in a night ... mainly due to pain..had more injections in my hip this morning maybe it will improve things including enabling me to get back in the garden.... but I do need a hip replacement so it's a temporary fix ... Chins up... It will all pass...🥰😘
3 weeks, that's great, good for you! I am relating; I have also been a non-sleeping night owl for years, and I retired on the new year, and have started a few new/better for me habits. Trying to sleep before midnight and shooting for a solid 6 hours! I'm doing fairly well, and I do feel better! Hope you keep it up! I don't want to be "one of those" comment-ers, but I'm in America, and I don't understand the time it's taking to buy/sell a home, it would be so extremely stressful.
I had exactly the same problem with my sleep pattern, including the stress of an upcoming appointment keeping me awake. I found that it was getting up at the same time in the morning that the most impact. I also have R&R in the evening, regardless of what else is going on. These days, I tend to wake before my alarm and I'm tired much earlier in the evening. Good luck with forming your new habits x
You are doing great with your new routine. Fab ideas, especially the journal. We have to look after ourselves in our fifties. Goals, relaxing, journalling. Reaaly well done Vivi. Inspirational as always. Wont be long, girl, and you will be off to pastures new, routine done and in place and lovely adventures setting up the new abode.
I loved watching British crime shows, Midsomer Murders is at times hilarious and you get to see a lot of actors before they became more well known. I also loved Vera. I did find it funny that they had so many murders in tiny little villages, though. ( :
I'm not a good sleeper either, I'm retired now so can wake when I want. I prefer to rise before 9am. I started to take magnesium glycinate which I read was good for anxiety and sleep. I have to say it does help me . I just thought I'd share if it helps.
I adore that show. When Douglas Henshall leaves after season 7, I was afraid I wouldn’t enjoy it anymore but I love the new character DI Ruth Calder. Have you ever watched the series Vera? It’s also adapted from Ann Cleeves novels. I really like that series too.
Great video Vivi, feel like we’re almost the same person! 😂 on my “to do” list for this year (and it’s a big list) is to go to bed earlier than 3.30am. Like you’ve said, It’s so easy to get into bad habits when you live on your own. I’ve kept a diary since I was 12, I’m trying to get into the habit of writing down 3 good things a day, that’s supposed to reduce stress within two weeks. Also, Far from the madding crowd….one of my faves, I love that dvd. I think you might enjoy Line of Duty, it’s seriously fab. Not too fast paced, unfortunately no beautiful scenery, but it’s one of those “can’t wait for the next episode” series. 🤗
I can relate to those current sleep patterns. I might sleep a bit and then get up and make a cuppa tea then watch / listen to TH-cam, generally waking in morning just as tired. But generally my circadian rhythm does kick in around 11pm. I find taking hrt especially the progesterone helps bring on deeper sleep - best wishes
I can highly recommend a Welsh crime drama called Hinterland, fabulous scenery, great casting and some of it in the Welsh language! It's on iplayer. I love Shetland too ❤️
My new habit was getting unfinished knitting projects completed. But then the flu absolutely floored me for 3+ weeks. Best laid plans and all that jazz.
I developed a habit of waking at 3 am, and being awake til half five. I am trying to go to bed at about 11 or 1130 and wake up around 6.30. Well done, Vivi.
Reformed night owl here too, well mostly! Since watching you over the past few years, I've started reading again every night to wind down (thanks to your non-fiction recommendations💞) and waking up early, I found changing my mindset really helped, I really love that hour to myself in the morning before the kids get up, a slow start to the day with my cup of coffee and there are so many things to enjoy at that hour, it just took me 46 years to realise 😏. I love the done-it list suggestion too.
@@WhatVivididnext, your love of literature is infectious Vivi, and you reminded me how much I missed it. Plus, your taste in books is very similar to mine, I've always read nonfiction. I won a cash prize when I was 13, and all I wanted was a subscription to National Geographic; every month, I received, by post, to a remote middle-of-nowhere farm, a beautifully photographed slice of the world. You helped remind me of that joy💓
I totally get the sleep issue, Vivi! I'm another who's awake till 3 or 4 am, have always been like this, even when I worked outside home. Now I get up at 8am ( self employed & work from home too these days) I've tried a zillion times to establish a better sleep routine. I felt MORE tired with all the extra sleep! Felt really groggy! Yuk! So I gave up. You've inspired me to give it another go. Fingers 🤞 we can crack it!
As you are ex NHS like I am we have witnessed illness and life is so short, so we chill. Take pain killers at night if legs hurt. Perhaps sleeping tablets for a few weeks and just go to bed early even if you do not sleep. I was up all night long but now I love bed early and set alarm. You need to be consistent 7-days a week with sleep hygiene x
I got Murder After Christmas in a charity shop (25p) I know what you’re saying, I felt the same, literally ploughed through (all that snow) and it got a bit better towards the end. I read Wilding after your recommendation and loved it, started I Contain Multitudes, absolutely fascinating! X
Get an updated NHS pension quote. You may be very surprised if it was final salary. Will help you to retire even if just pays gas and electric and c tax x
25f and I'm being a lazy person still in bed and oh my old aching bones😮but I am retired so I can stay in my warm bed all snuggled down and just enjoy 😊
I feel your pain we have been selling late mother in laws house got a buyer in June its just gone through phone call on Friday then should be sorted . Your not going to believe this while typing solicitor rang nows its Monday !!!!! X😔

Ugh, it IS stressful......the whole system needs an overhaul!
Thank you lovely. X
👍👍👍
You are doing great with your new routine. Fab ideas, especially the journal. We have to look after ourselves in our fifties. Goals, relaxing, journalling. Reaaly well done Vivi. Inspirational as always. Wont be long, girl, and you will be off to pastures new, routine done and in place and lovely adventures setting up the new abode.
I can hardly wait now! 😊
I loved watching British crime shows, Midsomer Murders is at times hilarious and you get to see a lot of actors before they became more well known. I also loved Vera. I did find it funny that they had so many murders in tiny little villages, though. ( :
Hahaha....yes.....friends of mine moved to the Midsummer area.....I warned them. 😉
A 'to-done' journal! Brilliant, I am going to do this.
😊
I'm not a good sleeper either, I'm retired now so can wake when I want. I prefer to rise before 9am. I started to take magnesium glycinate which I read was good for anxiety and sleep. I have to say it does help me . I just thought I'd share if it helps.
I'm so glad it has helped you. I have recently stopped taking it as it made no difference for me.
I adore that show. When Douglas Henshall leaves after season 7, I was afraid I wouldn’t enjoy it anymore but I love the new character DI Ruth Calder. Have you ever watched the series Vera? It’s also adapted from Ann Cleeves novels. I really like that series too.
I've never seen Vera but am going to keep a look out for the DVDs in charity shops. 😊
Terence Stamp in his hey day.... in full colour... or Shakespeare in love...Joseph Feinnes in full colour... does it for this old girl!😆
Good luck with your 'to do' list! Going to bed earlier has been easier than I thought......but getting up at 7.30 is still hideous! 😉
Oh yes!! ❤️
As we get older, life gets harder and diet and rest is very important.
I can highly recommend a Welsh crime drama called Hinterland, fabulous scenery, great casting and some of it in the Welsh language! It's on iplayer. I love Shetland too ❤️
Thank you lovely, I'll keep a look out for it in the charity shops. 😊
Absolutely agree. It is a wonderful series !
Yes, I love all of the Welsh dramas ❤@hellowildflowerstories
My new habit was getting unfinished knitting projects completed. But then the flu absolutely floored me for 3+ weeks. Best laid plans and all that jazz.
I hope you're on the mend now.
I developed a habit of waking at 3 am, and being awake til half five. I am trying to go to bed at about 11 or 1130 and wake up around 6.30. Well done, Vivi.
Here's hoping we can both crack it! 😊
I'm so delighted to hear that you've started reading again.....one of the best stress busters. I can't imagine bed time without a story. 😉
Love Shetland, he is so handsome.
I am 58 and all of a sudden I need a sleep routine and bed early up early. I try “do not sweat the small stuff” x
Hi vivi. You might find it easier if when you move you have separate bedroom from living space. Set a routine,
I hope so. 😊
If you can find Bergerac in charity shops, that is a lovely escape. The scenery is good too. ❤
Hahaha....I remember that was one of my Mum's favourites. 😉
If you're enjoying Shetland maybe you'll also like Vera set in Northumberland.
I reckon I would......looking for the DVDs in charity shops now. 😊
Soory to hear you've had all thee stress Vivi. Hinterland, as someone else mentioned, is brilliant. Looking forward to watching your upload
Thanks lovely.....I'll definitely keep an eye out for it in the charity shops. 😊
Sorry you have stress. Love and hugs.
Here's hoping! 😊

Sorry for your stress Vivi,I can’t shake this chest thing going around stressing me lol xx
Ach, that's horrid for you. 😢
I got Murder After Christmas in a charity shop (25p) I know what you’re saying, I felt the same, literally ploughed through (all that snow) and it got a bit better towards the end. I read Wilding after your recommendation and loved it, started I Contain Multitudes, absolutely fascinating! X
Oh I'm so glad you enjoyed Wilding......and the Multitudes book is such an absorbing and thought provoking read. 😊
Stress police on their way 😂😂 ha ha you’ve not listened to your sense humour Vivvi 😂😂
😉
❤
Get an updated NHS pension quote. You may be very surprised if it was final salary. Will help you to retire even if just pays gas and electric and c tax x
As I've explained before I won't get much of one as I only paid in for a couple of years. It won't even pay one bill.
I respect what you say but I was in 6 years and a lot of different little jobs but mine will pay as it stands monthly c tax and heating 😊
25f and I'm being a lazy person still in bed and oh my old aching bones😮but I am retired so I can stay in my warm bed all snuggled down and just enjoy 😊
Yay! Make the most of it. Happy snuggle time. 😊
I feel your pain we have been selling late mother in laws house got a buyer in June its just gone through phone call on Friday then should be sorted . Your not going to believe this while typing solicitor rang nows its Monday !!!!! X😔
Ugh......it's the most frustrating, stressful thing!

Loved that film so beautiful. Who would you have chosen to marry?
