Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

Prove it. No one forced small businesses to close, they chose to close voluntarily because they didn't want to face threats of fines, jail. People faced the same threats throughout history such as the suffragettes. Owning a business and having a community wasn't important enough to people.

Not “free-market capitalism”, mind you, but the crony kleptocapitalism of the super wealthy; i.e., Big Tech, Big Pharma, Big Oil, etc. The solution is “state capitalism”; I.e., nationalization of large corporations, but small and medium-sized business retaining private ownership. Also, there must exist a mechanism wherein the super wealthy capitalists are disenfranchised, and barred from the political process, to prevent their resurgence.

I work in a factory in MN. We did not shut down but they did a lot of ridiculous "social distancing" procedures that curtailed production enormously. We got lots of new employees, including one I worked with from Houston who did interior work on people's kitchens and some other rooms. He started from helping friends and relatives and grew into a business with a decent sized customer list with employees of his own. During the lockdowns he lost his customers and business because he wasn't allowed to go into people's houses anymore to work. Contractor work like his didn't disappear completely, but some were allowed to continue and others were just screwed. He ended up moving in with relatives here and finding a much less rewarding job. He does great work here but it's still sad to see people's lives turned upside down because of this attack on the small business people that were successful enough to not have a boss aside from their customers. There are many thousands, perhaps millions of families affected negatively in similar ways from this Covid attack while the powerful ones just attain more and more clout.

Though I'm not from a metro area it was shocking how people from places like that (and even rural areas) were scared out of their minds. He'd only quit his other job and started doing this full time the previous year. It seems that the interruption of work came at a time when he 100% needed income he thought was already guaranteed and it disappeared.

I became self-employed in 1987 when it finally dawned on me that I could not depend on ANY business to keep me employed. Finding a job in my small town of less than 18,000 people was near impossible. You basically had to know a guy who knew a guy that could get you a job. The Unemployment office was a joke. I was not going to be a dead beat and started my own business in something that I was already at least familiar with. In about 11 months I reach full retirement age and have been self-employed all these years. I could never again work for someone else although I realize some do well as an employee and that there must of necessity be employees. It just wasn't for me. I managed just barely to refinance my paid off car back in 1987 for just enough to get me started and added better equipment when possible. I'm in no way condemning being an employee, just saying there are other options for some who dare to start their own business. Take a look at the Department Stores and other businesses that were successful because they were designed around the concept of people and families leaving home and going to the Mall to spend time browsing, shopping, eating and just being together as family and friends; doing so THE AMERICAN WAY.
The Tech sector has taken from us a Blessing ,and turned it into a curse, and did so with our own Blessings.
We the people gave in to the manipulative culture of laziness and individual gratification, and the MONSTERS of the Globalists Tech Industry took advantage of our weakness for the SELF, and got us to DESTROY a way of life that has served us well for hundreds of years.
Let us look back at the days of the Department Stores, Restaurants, and other Businesses that Created the Concept of the Mall, The place where hundreds of peoples and families met Daily to enjoy being with Friends and family.
Are we satisfied with sitting on our behinds watching Television programs that are funded by these same people who seduced us to support their online service at the Cost of FAMILY TOGETHERNESS, Exercise and peace of mind, and not to forget the discontent and loneliness that our children are suffering because of Big tech coming between us and them.

There was limited freight to haul and what was available paid so low I would have to pay out of pocket... ie at a loss, in the red. 3 years in business, not strong and stable enough to have extended losses on every load. Farm, custom meat production... you order the exact type and kind of meat product, we bought and raised the animal until slaughter then you pick up at butcher. We had been in business 5 years. No one was looking to pay the price of $20 while finished chickens when uncertainty and Walmart had em for $7-8.
And then all the peppers started buying chicks, destabilizing the chick market as breeders could not meet demand, price goes up blah blah blah. We knew several small businesses we hauled freight for, machine shops, electrical contractors, building contractors, other small manufacturing etc... all out of business. One guy who had a small welding business is still going, 1 out of 20 small businesses survived.

I saw the plan from day one. As a sole practicing doctor I decided to not pay my office mortgage for almost the entire two year span of this stupidity. I didn’t even practice. I saved every dollar I had in the bank except paying the building power and utilities as to not feel as if legitimately cheating. I saw the release of the lockdown as hope for the stupid and yes I was correct another came quickly. All those people who survived spending all of their savings hats off I hope you recover. To all those who spent every last dime and then failed to get it going again I am sorry the government caused that scenario for you and you didn’t see it coming. I saw this coming and quickly did the math. I was shut down for a period of time that would have drained my savings paying that mortgage if we saw no clear end in sight. It would have ruined me. For any asking why I didn’t practice when deemed essential is because I refused to wear a mask and my patients were disapproving of that practice. I watched all of the humans I cared for turn zombie with fear and I am no zombie to irrationally based tyranny. As it turns out my mortgage company called finally and said hey we gotta do something. I told them I wasn’t going to be paying unless we worked somethings out and so we did. They lowered my then current 6 % mortgage to 2 % and set the first payment to start 6 months done the road. They cleared interest accrued and also took the principle and interest paid before I stopped and filled my escrow only flipping the current owed escrow into my loan. We were able to negotiate a great deal when we sat down and actually discussed what I saw and what was happening and I knew they were hurting with a mass loss of mortgage owners due to this plandemic. They were able to negotiate anything due to government helping them with adjustments but no clear bailout for them so they are stuck with the problems that were created except for the negotiation process being an out. I would have lost everything had I not made that decision. I knew it was a power grab and shift of wealth when I saw as you said Walmart Home Depot Lowe’s Kroger’s Amazon etc still open while we walked in and repeatedly held the self scanners of the person before me with no cleaning etc. pathetic to see. Sad to see how all those people working tirelessly without a vaccine were immediately jeopardized by their career when it was attempted to be mandated. Ridiculous. Just happy I saw it first

Canada is a example of taking arms away from the People. America never give up our 2nd Amendment, and Freedom of Speech.

I am in New Zealand and you can go anywhere and probably see 20% empty stores up for lease and the government tries to say everything is good.
Shopping has gone up at least 25% to 50%.
I lost my 34year career to the covid crisis 22 months ago and can't seem to land a job because of my age ( I am 60 now... the retirement age is 65.) and I am sure there's plenty of people in the same and worst circumstances.

Even without the lockdowns it's likely many small businesses wouldn't have survived in certain parts of the country. There were/are still many people who are in self imposed lockdown, still afraid to go to restaurants and are still wearing masks where they're not mandated.

Yeah that is strange. I'm in northern NY state. I haven't masked in almost two years. Most blue collar businesses didn't mask either and didn't enforce the farce. I did get thrown out of a supermarket once. But only once.
I don't know anyone that died or was hospitalized. Covid was a big city problem not a rural problem.
