Replace the CDI box and that will fix your issue I would put money on it. Contact CDI and they can direct you in the right direction, but for the cost of an hour worth of a mechanic you can fix it yourself. Dont use starting fluid on a 2-stoke it is really hard on the cylinder walls because you are starting it without lube since 2-stokes gets it lube from the gas mix.
My situation is very different, live on Lake Champlain, any motor goes! I have a 18’ boat we use to fish and my old merc 75 put me through what you’re going through. My father in law gave me a 9.9 4 stroke he had sitting around for years in his garage and I mounted it as a kicker while I kept working on the 75. We used the boat about 5 days a week, my wife and I and she’d lay in the sun while I troll around on the little 4 stroke. Last year, I pulled the 75 and it’s hanging from a tree right now and centered the 9.9 and love it! We can trailer the boat super easy, use it all season (from ice out until October when hunting starts and spend less than $150 a SEASON for fuel. It looks funny for sure and even get some comments at boat launch but I smile and remember the lack of headaches, money saved and time spent with my wife. Just my thoughts but a big fancy would be nice, for sure but take time to enjoy what you have as well.
I’ve been watching your build since the beginning I gave you quite a few comments and advice. I have the same motor I had the same problems. It started with this detour and the timer base. It does not matter about fuel delivery. If the electronic system doesn’t work properly I believe I gave you the advice, you need a bigger fuel pump. There should be two fuel pumps for that motor. My motor had the exact same problem however, today it runs 65 miles an hour on a Ranger 373.
My buddy had the same motor I think it’s worth have a mechanic look at it they are super fast and reliable you have to remember it’s been sitting for a long time.
I feel your pain about not being able to use it. I live in NY and the majority of the lakes around me are either electric or restricted so if I want to freshwater fish, there's only a handful, and they're all an hour (or more) away. But I'm not getting rid of the boat, I just have to plan my trips out. As for the outboard, I'd say keep tinkering, it very well could be a timing issue as well. Don't spend too much time or money on it though. I would really suggest getting rid of it and finding yourself a nice used Yamaha 2 stroke or even a Johnson fast strike/Evinrude intruder (they're the same but both excellent engines) for it. Whatever you do, don't give up and don't sell the boat, you will regret it, I promise you
replace the stator and timer base. had the same issues with my 150. replaced those 2 and it ran like a new engine. those engines run extremely hard and well when running correct. loved mine.
Had an old 75 Johnson was doing the same thing ram great on muffs. With back pressure would misfire and bogg sometimes not run. Found that the head gasket was blownn and thermostat components were melted.
If your gonna get a new motor for it, merc pro xs 150 or 200. You will always be able to travel and who knows life might change. You would regret putting a small motor onto it
What year is this? I had a 94 pantera 2 with a mercury 150 xri. For a 150 that thing would go like scalded cat. Miss that boat. Should have never sold it.
Had same issue with bogging and not hitting on all cylinders on my skeeter. Ended up being the voltage rectifier. But a bad stator and pulser coil have to same symptoms. Hope that helps. The rectifier is the cheapest out the 3
i got my hands on an 86 ranger with a 200 yamaha on it and had a lot of trouble running under load. In gear it could not go above 1700 rpm. I just trimmed it all the way down and drove around the lake with new gas with additive and it slowly started climbing and climbing in power. Today it runs great and I just have to run good gas through it.
Put a 200hp Mercury on it. Have the power you need and want for when the opportunity comes up to fish bigger water. Get a good trolling motor and use that on your local lakes to go fishing. I fish a lot of Southern Wisconsin lakes and a lot of time I troll the whole time and never fire the big motor. Set it up for ultimate usage and then adapt to the lake situation. Keep up the great work.
Been watching your TH-cam channel since the first episode and have watched you through the move, the trials and tribulations of restoring this boat. Would love to see it running but you have to do what you think is best for you. I would put money into a new 4 stroke 150 if you wanna keep the boat and be done with it but that does costs a chunk of money to do and if there’s a lake within 90 minutes or so maybe it’s worth it to ya. One thing is that it doesn’t cost a thing to sit in the garage until you figure out what you wanna do with it.
You got this. Adjust the throttle and replace the fuel filter and fill the new fuel filter up with a can of ssafoam marine. Might be the fuel pump, but the seafoam process seriously cleans out the engine and preps for a season.
Try to get new power packs . I have a 84 Johnson rebuild the carbs and it Did the same exact stuff . Changed the power backs got the cylinders hitting when it was in gear . Don’t know if it will work for you but it worked for me . Good luck buddy
Did you link n sync the motor? If you didn’t, that could be your problem. I rebuilt my sons 1990 Johnson 150, not a GT. It took me all summer for it to be a reliable motor. Good luck.John
Keep grinding bro. Seems like you are in a rock and hard place. I think if I were in your shoes and Nebraska is a long term plan, I would downsize the motor and still use the boat. Or keep working to fix it and then use it for longer trips and use/get a smaller boat for your local lakes. Sounds like their neighbors are little annoying though. Especially if you are just wanting to fish. I guess its true, they say misery love company and some people take pleasure in harassing's other, but don't let them get to you. You are always so positive and optimistic. Pull out a map and see what big lakes are within a 1-2,3 4 hour drive and maybe the Basscat becomes a weekend boat for you and the girlfriend in 2023....
Make sure you use the original OMC gaskets. I used some Amazon ones and my motor did something similar. Once I got the OMC gaskets it was running perfect. 1995 Johnson 115 fast strike.
Yeah got some off eBay for my 150 xp Evinrude and they melted and shrunk giving me a ton of problems. I got some good name brand ones and my motor is running good.
Not sure exactly where your at in Nebraska but. Assuming your close to the omaha area. You can run full wake in the Missouri River. Note would get it working better the current is strong. Also there are some lakes by Lincoln that allow wake might be 1 - 2 hour drive tho. Shocked rebuilding the carbs didn't work. I would make sure your running 93 octane. I would make sure your fuel delivery system is in good order. I am no expert but if you have the pump ball thingy does it run better. If it has one that is
Bought me a 93 bass cat. Rebuilt all 6 carbs amd some fuel lines. Fired up and went. 2 launches later it dies now when I start to go. My buddy does the throttle by hand at the motor after I put it in gear and we take off and it runs great till I come to almost a stop then taking off again it dies. What the hell is going on. Just curious if you may know or someone else may know. Thanks in advance
I don’t believe it is fuel pumping could be but I lean it in coils, plugs could even be a float stuck in the rebuild carb. Send to a mechanic and stop giving yourself a headache. Fix up or sell the jet ski for the money you need for the gt then sell the boat in top shape to put into the all electric boat you’ve got and have a blast with what you have. You’ve done amazing work with the cat sometimes they need a trainer
After a carb rebuild, you have to link and sync the carbs IN the water while moving at idle. This requires a captain and another person to sync them. The carbs are not synced together properly and causing the motor to lope and bog out, then shut off.
Bro! You can put two motors on the boat! Big one in middle, little one off to the side. Lots of guys do that where I live. Then depending on the lake they will use one or the other!
are there no public lakes you can run bigger HP engines on? also it sounds like the engine is running too rich or too lean, im going to say too rich, i think you need to adjust the carburetor needles, my engine was bogging down untill i messed with the carburetor needle, its a 2 stroke though, either way, it runs ok at idle and rips at plain, look up four stroke carburetor sync
You move to somewhere that has lakes you can use that motor at or you just drive to the nearest one it could be an hour or two away to a lake that allows it
Synch the carbs if you didn't already, all six carbs have to be in synch. Also the timing needs checked but that has to be under load, which requires a special prop.
Don't sell it!! That is a beautiful motor that matches the boat. It has compression so you can get it running sweet WAY cheaper than a new motor and it will scream. Take it to a shop and have them fix it. I personally think it is the stator or powerpack if it is missing terribly. After it is fixed drive as far as you have to and let that thing RIP! Make sure you film that big ass smile on you face for us at 60 mph. We are waiting for it!!
Not the fuel pump carbs on that are hard to get perfectly clean so I feel u have not got them right quick check if carbs are issue is push choke while running if it clears up that’s issue also the power packs are famous for giving issue even brand new ones loosing spark on one cylinder fire up on hose pull plug wires listen for change ,this will be a great motor once running right but I would get a nice 150 four stroke on back and beefy trolling motor on bow
I think it's a firing issue. I would read up on how to test the stator and coils. Not sure if this engine has a driver module for the coil packs are not. But it sounds like a firing issue to me.
You have a “ spark “ issue , I would say one of the power packs are bad. Put the engine in a large tub ov water, put it in gear, pull a spark plug and you will be able to tell if each wire is getting spark .
Reminds me of my 84 Johnson 70hp I finally gave up and bought a new Suzuki. It looks like you need a new gasket the power head sits on. I see it leaking down midsection
Maybe try calling Team Marine Service in La Crosse Wisconsin. They run a TH-cam channel as well and they are really knowledgeable people. They might be able to get you pointed in the right direction over the phone.
I just bought an old ranger with that exact motor and it had some issues I was able to find a complete shop manual online for it. Definitely start with the correct fuel pump I can send you a listing if you want and then if that doesn't fix it make sure you have the champion plugs recommended and check each coil pack, instructions are on the manual. One other thing known to go bad on these engines are the power pack there is one on each side of the motor can also cause a misfire. I can email you the manual if you want
Im interested as well. Bought me a 93 bass cat with a V6 150 evinrude splitfire. It wants to die after putting it in gear and giving it gas. It'll go if we do it manually from the motor. Weird but I can't figure it out. Any help woukd be much appreciated brother. Thank u
@@concrete2catfishin same thing wad just happening to mine I had a carb float stuck down if the primer bulb will not get hard and fuel coming out of the front of the carb when priming that is the issue
Well you did just build that lil electric boat for all those lakes around you so that helps. Get the right motor for it and use it for trips! Camping or weekend or just a long day trip!
It could be the spark plugs -spark plug coils -possibly the power pack It could be the fuel pump Or could be something with the carbs Just some stuff to check into and hopefully fix the issues
I run a Yamaha 9.9 four stroke with forward controls on a 92 procraft V-180c. The boat flows nice and flat at 4 to 6 mph. But it will plow if I try to push it past 6 mph and I really wont get any thing else out of it except more rpms. The boat goes almost 2 mph on idle. So my real world useable speed range is 2 to 6 mph. The kicker charges too so that is nice when out all day. If you don't have enough HP to get on plane, I would ask why need more than 10 HP? IMHO you would just plow at high RPM and burn fuel with a 25 HP motor.
Assuming u checked that it was arcing blue on all cylinders. Put it in a 55 gal drum of water. Open it up. let it run. Move the carb linkages and chokes while running. Pay attention to what's happening. To make sure there all aligned correctly. Maybe chokes are not setting right. My guess is it hasn't ran faster than idle in a long time. Carbon build up on cam and sticky lifters. Sea foam maybe. I'm no expert. Just know my old evinrude would sound like that after sitting up over winter. But would be running fine by the end of summer. Change foot oil if you haven't. 20 bucks for the pump and oil at wally world. I hear you about not needing that much motor. With your situation I probably would just try to trade it for a motor your able to use before getting any further into it. You need to ask yourself if it's about learning some mechanics or just getting the boat to run?
This was painful. LOL. Stopped the video to comment. Never use straight starting fluid on a 2 stroke, well unless you want it to go to 2 stroke heaven. These motors have an enrichment circuit. Meaning when you push the choke button in, it shoots gas right down into the motor. For a cold star, pump the bulb up, press the choke button for 10 seconds, then fire it up. Bump the choke button to keep it running until it warms up. Also with the cowling off in the driveway, when you push the choke button, you should here the solenoid I'm talkimg about picking up. Scream & Fly is a great resource. Buy a factory service manual. They are not hard to fix with right resources.
Time for a life change. Time to up and move to Florida or Texas. I was in the same situation when I was in my 30's. It felt like only 10 years went by and I was 60. My Mom always said the older you get the faster it seems to go by, Mom's are right most of the time. Anyhow good luck with what ever you do, but I vote for a move, and keep the bass boat....jimi
Youv'e proved that the motor runs you just need to get the throttle linkage working correctly. When it was running in the last video it sounded like it was just idling to low, as in the throttle cable just needed tightening. Then you unhooked the cables and it ran fine. When you had it in the water you should have took off the hood and revved it up manually it probably would have took right of just fine, could be a cable issue or controller issue. Or it could be just as simple as the throttle cable is out of adjustment.
Don’t under power the boat keep the right size motor cause you will want to go to other places in the long run and will need the bigger motor. Also you have to John boat for smaller lakes. Just saying I know someone that put a 50 hp motor on his to comply and regretted it when he wanted to go places away from where he lived. Also a under powered boat will get you in lots trouble on big bodies of water if ur not careful.
The closest lake to me is 30 minutes away and the best ones are an hour away from me! I would never give up my 90hp unless somebody wanted to give me a (150 HINT!)
So I’ve had this issue with a motorcycle. Started and idled pretty good. Under load it stumbled and cut out. May not be your exact problems but do a quick test on your coils if you haven’t yet. Can be done easily with a cheap meter and you can call a dealership to get the correct ohm readings for your make and model. Also, clean and check all your electrical connection. Again, you may have done this buy just need to ask. You said it misfires, but have you narrowed it down to which cylinder or cylinders it is? If it’s located at specific cylinders then you have your path narrowed to those. If it’s random, it could be a bad something bad in the electrical path or how it distributes spark. Did you run it up past idle at the house? Might have been something you cut out of the video when editing Your answers are here in the comments. I would have a list of all the suggestions and then check them off as you confirm it’s not the issue. That will help you keep track while you trouble shoot. I just don’t like taking things to a mechanic because I just don’t trust most shops. It could be a simple fix but you’d never know. Instead your at some else’s mercy to tell you what’s wrong But if you are serious about keeping the boat, maybe a good running used motor is the best bet. Don’t put a kicker on it. Good luck. And next time don’t keep us hanging 😂😄😂😄😂
I've had a few Johnson/Evenrude motors, when they run, they run good. But they are junk! Parts are hard to get especially since they went out of business. Sell it off for parts and use some TH-cam money to pick up a decent Mercury, or Yamaha
Compression , spark , fuel pressure ….. buy the correct manual Sync/link carbs Try running it on a separate fuel tank . If you deleted the vro , you need the correct pump .
Have you tried getting in touch with Brandon of Brandon’s Garage? He has a website an he can fix any boat motor. Give him a shout out an see if he can help you. Please! I love this boat! Lol
Don't give up man. I have the same motor on a 1989 180 tf nitro and it works like a charm. We had a power pack and timer base issue (which u have to pop the flywheel off to fix) it doesn't seem like it's misfiring just not enough fuel. Adjust those cables correctly and u should be golden man. U got this!
STATOR TIMERBASE COILS POWERPACK!!!!! Replace those. I have worked on a lot of those, I hate the gt150. Also, check and see if it’s only running on 1 bank via a short interrupter switch. Check for melted epoxy under the flywheel. Contact me I can walk you through getting that thing running perfect in a few hours.
Bro the boat is gorgeous you’ve done great but the motor needs a different person on it and it you have video proof of what’s happening now on the water that’s on the upside of it lol so that’s good if you give it away I’ll take it lmao for mine in nc
Sincerely, I'd get a quote to see how much it would cost to have it repair, then if you have the guts, have it repaired and then sell it for more money than you would without it repaired. It could mean that you wouldn't sell it as fast as you'd like though... and then I'd buy another 2 stroke Johnson outboard... I know the 1988 ones were beasts, especially the 40 to 60hp ones. My uncle has 2 of them, they both sat there for over 10 years with no winterizing (in Canada!) and they started first try, same goes for mine, it was at someone's cottage and he wanted to get rid of it, it started first try after almost 20 years of doing nothing and no winterizing and was outdoor as well.
Don't sell that engine, more than likely the carbs need adjusted and need to be synced. Check the coils, they're not expensive. And you might need to replace the spark plugs, even if they've been replaced. That's a good engine. I had a similar issue with mine, the carb kits you got might not have the right jets, check the original ones and the ones you installed. You might need to clean and put the original jets back in.
KEEP MOTOR !! FIND A SHOP MANUAL ON MOTOR AND PUT THE CORRECT FUEL PUMP IN IT AND MAKE SURE THE THROTTLE IS ADJUSTED AMD CORRECT SPARK PLUGS MAKE A DIFFERENCE .. CHECK COIL PACKS? LOT OF NO COST THINGS YOU CAN DO FIRST.. THOSE MOTORS RUN FOREVER AND ARE EASY TO REBUILD...
Sell the motor and get a 115 pound trolling motor. No sense losing the time invested. Plus you have the lithium batteries from the all electric boat. Later on when you relocate you can remotor with something newer
1,000 likes and we’ll take it to a mechanic!
What decking is that?
Make sure when on land you can rev it by throttle , seems like your advancing timing shifting but your butter fly valves on carbs aren’t opening
Replace the CDI box and that will fix your issue I would put money on it. Contact CDI and they can direct you in the right direction, but for the cost of an hour worth of a mechanic you can fix it yourself. the timing is off on it and you need to pull the flex plate and re-time it. also might need a timing/spark coil ring. it goes under the flex plate.

I know when my 2000 Johnson 200 did this under load it was a shift Sensor cutting spark to one side of the engine.
Reminds me of my 84 Johnson 70hp
I finally gave up and bought a new Suzuki.
It looks like you need a new gasket the power head sits on.
I see it leaking down midsection
Hey what camera do you use?
Sony A7C
Nice it has great quality
Power pack?
I could only see one fuel pump. Pretty sure you should have two. Mine does. I’ve had mine for 35 years. Very good motor when you get it right.
Get the hp it's rated for and use the trolling motor to fish the area you are in
Maybe try calling Team Marine Service in La Crosse Wisconsin.
@@concrete2catfishin if you want to send me your email I can send the shop manual your way
Well you did just build that lil electric boat for all those lakes around you so that helps. Get the right motor for it and use it for trips! Camping or weekend or just a long day trip!
It could be the spark plugs -spark plug coils -possibly the power pack
It could be the fuel pump
Or could be something with the carbs
Just some stuff to check into and hopefully fix the issues
Is the fuel tank vented???
The ol "Get tools " 150. Drop that thing in the lake that had the angry dock police.
A 2 stroke engine does not have a cam or lifters.
I took the engine off my procraft a few years ago and put the best electric trolling motor I could afford and had more fun fishing than I can explain.
They are not hard to fix with right resources.
have you done a compression check?
Yes, check out my last vid
Time for a life change. Time to up and move to Florida or Texas. I was in the same situation when I was in my 30's. It felt like only 10 years went by and I was 60. My Mom always said the older you get the faster it seems to go by, Mom's are right most of the time. Anyhow good luck with what ever you do, but I vote for a move, and keep the bass boat....jimi
Check the primer ball make sure it’s going the right way and it’s up and down
Why does it need to be up and down? I'm having the same problem with my 1991 VRO.
Just got to know how start those engines there is a technique to it I’ve ran a lot of looper engines
I am rebuilding a 1981 ranger bass boat that motor would go good on
Don’t under power the boat keep the right size motor cause you will want to go to other places in the long run and will need the bigger motor. Also you have to John boat for smaller lakes. Just saying I know someone that put a 50 hp motor on his to comply and regretted it when he wanted to go places away from where he lived. Also a under powered boat will get you in lots trouble on big bodies of water if ur not careful.
That throttle linkage is adjustable... sounds like it's not pulling the full range to actually open up the throttle.
The closest lake to me is 30 minutes away and the best ones are an hour away from me! I would never give up my 90hp unless somebody wanted to give me a (150 HINT!)
Could be the power pack, that was the cause of mine when I thought it was the carbs. Get the power pack checked out. Then possibly the Vro
Might have been something you cut out of the video when editing
Your answers are here in the comments. I would have a list of all the suggestions and then check them off as you confirm it’s not the issue. That will help you keep track while you trouble shoot. I just don’t like taking things to a mechanic because I just don’t trust most shops. It could be a simple fix but you’d never know. Instead your at some else’s mercy to tell you what’s wrong
But if you are serious about keeping the boat, maybe a good running used motor is the best bet.
Compression , spark , fuel pressure …..
buy the correct manual
Sync/link carbs
Try running it on a separate fuel tank .
If you deleted the vro , you need the correct pump .
Have you tried getting in touch with Brandon of Brandon’s Garage? He has a website an he can fix any boat motor. Give him a shout out an see if he can help you. Please! I love this boat! Lol
Turn the jetski into the ultimate fishing jetski! Not alot of videos on it!
Working for Brad the Builder you must have met Andrew Flair. Talk to him where to take the boat, he's on the water all the time.
That lever u are pulling up is not the choke it’s for faster idle push the key in for choke
You should use the jetski for a trade in and get a brand new Mercury 150 Pro XS.
If it were worth that much I would 🤣
Love the vids.
lower unit might be blown my 90hp merc did the same thing.
The nearest lake I can fish is an hour away with my 1978 ranger 17 five
I need a motor for my boat I'm trying to repower my boat how much you selling the motor for
Looks like all you need to do is adjust the throttle. I don’t thinks it’s actually misfiring. And get the right fuel pump. Don’t give up yet
carbs need synchronized to really run good. need a mechanic with the right kind of vacuum gauges. After my carbs were it ran great...
Get rid of the jet ski. Bass boats and jet ski's don't get along. 😂 beautiful bass cat btw.
Before you check any spark issues mess around with the tune on the carbs and if that doesn’t do anything then look into spark issues
Me too
Don't sell that engine, more than likely the carbs need adjusted and need to be synced. Check the coils, they're not expensive. And you might need to replace the spark plugs, even if they've been replaced. That's a good engine. I had a similar issue with mine, the carb kits you got might not have the right jets, check the original ones and the ones you installed. You might need to clean and put the original jets back in.
As for the shifter
It could be you might need a new shifter cable
Shift cable works great
You need a bigger Garage. I enjoy following this build
Will be in a shop soon!
Later on when you relocate you can remotor with something newer
i wishi i would have saw this video when it was current those carbs need to be cleaned balanced and adjusted
You need new wires and spark plugs with take the miss out of it you go a spark plug dead some where causing it to miss
