I watched this back in 1992 and have wanted to watch it again ever since. I was hoping someone would eventually put it on TH-cam.

I saw this original production when it was first aired on BBC 2 in the 80s. I bought the soundtrack and have always listened to it. So glad I have a chance to watch it again here

Very glad to have a chance to see this again after 25 years (ouch). Still weird, but weirdly intriguing...

I love the fact that they manged to think in Damien Hirst`s shark titled "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living" to this performance :)

      Bad taxidermies are not art.

I saw that too! Brilliant, both symbolically and as a symbol of the times.

@@fredericktarr8266 Indeed. They are an affront to art, in fact.

Trivia: the narrator is the same actor who played Aragorn in the BBC 1980s radio production of LoTR.

I have always loved this from seeing it on tv - Wonder if Marschner wrote anything else!

Where can I get the lyrics for the song "Hail Satan" (@5min)? That scene is one of my favourites. Brilliantly executed. Thank you so much for uploading. Magnificent.

Authentic early 19th-century performance practice this is NOT. But the music is delightful, in its own way, although hardly original. It has Der Freischütz written all over it, and in that way it represents its era. The production is delightfully cheesy and never less than fun, even if one questions the good taste. The less said about the English text the better. The singers are of mixed quality, but always adequate. And as it says, it brings a worthy, historically significant and neglected work to an audience (if not exactly to "life"). (Side note: the nude scenes allow you to see the singers breathe and use their muscles for support in a way you generally cannot in the theater-even if they are only singing along during the filming.)

Given that President Trump bears more than a passing resemblance to Mr. Ripley, this is absolutely fabulous.

Great job turning an underperformed opera into a degenerate pornographic film. On the positive side, there are a few good ideas in this.

My God... It's horrible and kitsch. And that is to fall short... And where did they get that anodyne protagonist? Thanks, anyway, for the contribution.

Actually, a film differs from an opera performance on stage Branagh’s The Magic Flute is also a very different presentation than most productions, but it works as a film. I cannot imagine seeing that version performed live and enjoying it.
