It's frustrating to me when people assume apple shaped girls are necessarily plus sized. I am a size 4 to 6 and an apple shape. My waist is larger in comparison to my hips. My legs are my best feature. I appreciate this video and learned some new tricks. Thank you!!

Jaime Zuniga I was thinking the same. When I was a young adult & 64kgs I was horrified I didn't have a waist compared to the average person. Now, because of injury, overeating & not being mobile I am obese. Haha still no waist, so to speak. Her examples have given me hope & very much like the fashion I have seen on plus sized American sites. I am Australian & would love to feel a little chic, regardless of size, body shape under the fat.

All of you saying that apple shapes are plus size, you're wrong. The shape doesn't have to do with your weight or much to do with petite/normal/plus. I am an apple shape. However I also only 5'1", 115 lbs, and wear a juniors size 5 in pants. That's NOT obese or even overweight at all. However, due to my measurements of my entire body, I am an apple shape. Everyone writes with such confidence about this and says this woman is incorrect but you couldn't be further from incorrect yourselves. I also know a lot of obese and overweight women. who are hourglass Shaped. My sister for instance is very obese weighing 380 while being 5'3" but you can look at her and clearly see her shape is hourglass. Shape and weight are NOT one in the same.

agree, i worked in a clothes shop and learned that, despite being fat and average height, my legs area a petite and my top half is long (further exaggerating my pear shape, ouch), finally i could get clothes to fit (but not from the same labels so not in matching colours and fabrics)

Yup, im pretty average weight and an apple. I have a tiny waist and tiny shoulders which i love, but got those "love handles", not that much hip width and a tummy, and I'll always have a tummy no matter how much weight i lose (unless i go crazy with abs targeted workouts which i wont lol)

Thanks for your positive take on the apple shape. You're literally the first person in fashion (or, really anywhere) I've ever heard acknowledge that women with these proportions can be sexy. The narrative is usually that apple shapes are unfeminine, unattractive, unhealthy, etc. It's nice to be taken as seriously as the hourglass crowd.

I'm a plus size apple and all these tips work for me. I'm no stick either. Look into plus size fashion bloggers. Dont be bogged down by fat phobia. Don't dress like you have to apologize for your body. Drawn attention to the thinnest part of your waist, usually right under or near the bust. I wear my skinny jeans high waisted and usually with tunics or drapey tops. I don't go for boleros because they hide the thinnest part of my waist. I like tops that have some sort of seam of decoration that emphasis that sweet spot right under the bust.

Apple shape doesn't immediately mean overweight. It means that you have a wider waist. I love it that you gave great examples of people who have apple shape body type and are not overweight.

Back in the late 80’s when I was in my early 40’s, I had a black dress with a peplum. It was made of a knitted fabric, was just above the knee, to the neck, long sleeved, and fitted like a glove. I used to wear it with fine, black, seamed stockings and black high heels. The only jewellery would be earrings. At the time I had very thick, very long ash blonde hair. That dress turned heads on both men and women, and I felt like a million dollars wearing it. I am apple-shaped and was about a size 4 - 6 at the time. Those were the days!!!

  • @jwilliams8931
    @jwilliams8931 7 ปีที่แล้ว +89

Agree that I can't wear empire waists, I get the "are you pregnant?" question every time because it looks like maternity, and peplums are horrible on me (something about the proportions). What usually works are wrap dresses, long sweaters, fitted vintage style dresses (with darting, flared skirt), tops with drape (as she mentioned) or tops with a frill element/asymetric cut, blazers etc. It's really hard to find proper fitting pants as the rise is cut so low these days but if you go too high it can look odd too, I have to at least make sure the length of my tops are adequate for good coverage while not looking messy. Tops with gathers at the chest don't always work because the lines don't always fall where they should, sometimes smocking works sometimes it doesn't.

I just learned more from your comment. I sometimes buy maternity tops, depending on the style, because it fits at the bust and leads the eye up. Never tried empire waist because my apple is a little too big.

Not all empire waists are styled the same - if there is any gathering an empire waist, like there is in "baby doll" styles that billow that WILL make the tummy look bigger. BUT if the empire waist has ZERO gathers - basically an A-line (an outward flare to the hips and past) it works to hide a tummy really really well. www.monroeandmain.com/blog/plus-size-fashion/wear-figure-flattering-empire-waist-style/

it makes a big difference if your belly sticks out or not, but even then i'm beginning to suspect you're hourglass or pear shape from what you say. But if you go out at the front not just the sides, it can make you look pregnant, i can't help thinking in these videos that she's not aware that this side of the channel we're a slightly different shape overall!

I love this! I have always wondered why I preferred some differing silhouettes from most fashion; especially the regular "pants + t-shirt" silhouette (when worn with little intention and care for the actual body type) never felt good for me. When I got more confident in general, I just adjusted belts, dresses and alike to my liking and you mirrored almost every single point! So interesting that it came to me naturally the minute I stopped just wearing what was out there...

These tips will definitely help me enhance my figure instead of tugging and pulling on all my clothing.

Thanks for the great tips Justine.. I'm a plus size apple (size 12 but I wear size 14 in most of my clothes, for modesty...) These tips work great for me. Just in case it would help someone else browsing through the comments: My legs are thick and I love showing them off when I wear dresses. Drapery, cowls, and halters work great for me, hides what I want to hide and shows off my silhouette. I rock these with nice heels yo. I don't like my big arms too much so I wear belts (thin ones work best for me) or necklaces that hang low into the torso. I haven't tried peplum dresses yet, but I will if I get the chance. Not sure how I'd look in it though. I love empress/empire cut dresses with flow-y A-line or full swish swish hems.

Dear Justine, I have to say I have never been interested in fashion that much because I never considered my body a nice shape at all. But now, as the 40-s are visiting me, you know, we women are very sensitive to our physical image at this stage in life, more than ever in my case. I only try to give it as much attention as I need to boost my confidence and cast away the middle age dark days. Luckily, I found you ...and I have learned a lot about how I can improve the way I dress. Today after a long long time I could choose my clothes with more tools than in the past, and I am quite happy with my purchase. This is, I must say, thanks to your videos and your humble and sympathetic attitude towards your viewers. You are an adorable person, thank you very very much. A heart felt hug.Estefy

I am so excited I found your channel Justine! I love your videos. It is so frustrating having an apple figure and being petite at the same time because I cant find dresses of anythingbwirh a zipper. I am looking for a dress for my sisters wedding in one month and have not been successful at all. I ordered so many dresses online as well as tried on many offline. I am a mother of a 5 month old and obviously my body is not back to how it's been but I had the problem before when I only weighted 53 kg.. zippers never close in my size and especially now it feels really as the fashion industry does not produce anything for my figure or body type. Any recommendations? 😭

Just found your channel and am really enjoying and learning so much, being basically a t-shirt and jeans woman my whole life (never understood fashion)-- so thank you! You offer useful advice and say it succinctly. My question is "What if you are an apple (wide waist) but also have short legs, big calves and thighs (even at my lowest weight they were never suitable for skinny jeans which I avoid like the plague)? Haven't had much luck with belts either. 😔

    • @joyharmon1110

Same here. My calves are not huge, but bigger than average. I look better in heels; it also gives me some height which helps balance out the shorter lower torso. I wore tapered jeans when stretch denim first came out, but these new skinny jeans actually squeeze my legs, yet the behind and waist are huge. What's that about?

Chariots1981 She showed us. Although we are to wear slim fitting jeans, we are to cover our bodies in a loose flowing top/cardigan/sleeveless long vest thingy. Our arms are covered, but not in floppy or bulky material. It is to give the illusion that we are slimmer underneath without having the blocky apple shape on show. I find if I am pizza a fraction wider than skinny leg suits me because I have thunder thighs, biggish calves & tiny ankles.

Thank you Justine for a really good video! But I have a challenge for you! - how about showing outfits from the back as well? I struggle SO MUCH with dressing so that I look put together from behind and from the side as well - because thats how most other people see me. I am an petite apple plus size with protruding (pregnant-like) belly, fat rolls on my upper back/under shoulder blades, wide upper arms w. rounded shoulders and no butt to speak of. Belts go in the rut under my backfat and makes me look pregnant and I look much wider from behind than I actually am. I need THOSE tips, please!❤️

I'm deeply saddened by the attitude in many comments. It's one thing to disagree or question, another to poison a video/-s with harsh, sarcastic, condemning comments. I don't think we need more nastiness in the world as it is right now. You don't have to fake niceness. Just be polite. Show respect. Be ein Mensch.

so interesting that even though I have no actual training I do tend to find high waist, flowing, OR blouses/tops that are shaped with an accentuated waist... last summer I was making a simple costume to wear to a re-enactment, and the blouse I made was the peplum, like you said! lol

Hello! So interesting! Thank you for the video. It is so confusing, even though I watched lots of videos about how to determine my shape including yours. I am a strange one, haha! Am I right to say I am an apple? My shoulders are the same as hips 41 inch, waist 31 inch but small bust 35 inch, so I come up in bodytype results as either a pear or hourglass depending if I compare my measurements by bust or shoulders. Maybe I am an apple, though, as I gain weight on my waist? Thank you

This was soooooo helpful! I didn’t know until I watched your videos that I am an apple shape (5’7” 135 lbs). The bolero and peplum blouses/skirts are great new ideas to play with! I also find that I prefer high-waisted skinny jeans with a little belt as they make me feel more shapely. Many thanks. 😘

This is not a fashion comment but a physiological one. Larger belkies are often due to excess cortisol. It might he a good idea for you to get your morning and 24 hour cortisol checked. I take ashwagandha for help in sleeping but it has a cortisol balancing effect (which is actually why it helps with sleep). It will help your cortisol get to the ideal level. It's an Ayurvedic herb and is really helpful for relaxing and sleep but also to maintain focus during the day. This is because cortisol levels affect alertness and sleepiness and fluctuate during the day and ashwagandha helps set it right. Just thought I'd mentionbthat because it has helped me so much. Also, my waist has shrunk while takin this but his is just a nice side effect and not why I take it. I can't slee without it.
Maybe I do have a fashion tip for that shape...I watch a chat show here in Canada and the host has a belly that is much bigger than the rest of her body (she has great legs!). She wears flowy tops that drape down from her bust and isn't fitted into her body from just below the bust right to the bottom of her blouses. She also wears a lot of blazers or scarves that she drapes over her shoulder, etc. She always looks fantastic. A flowy blouse that is cut straight down from the bust is probably your best bet and looks fabulous on this host. :)

Hi Edna - I have the "pregnant seeming" problem and have had since puberty. Here area few things that have worked for me you could try: 1. wearing a single breasted jacket, or sweater, or cardigan, or even a blouse open over a top.. 2. tops with a waterfall-style ruffle down the middle distracts from the belly, believe it or not. You want to distract the eye down to the legs and up to the chest as well. 3. Empire waists which flow to an A-line work - but not empire waists with gathering that billow - as that will make the tummy look bigger still! :( 4. Also avoid belting unless it's a same colour skinny belt and that may work if it's belted high in the empire position. 5. Lastly try a blouson tops and also dropped waists - basically a "surrender the waist" strategy. bonus #6 :) An interesting hip belt works well with this last strategy.

I agree the apple shaped body's widest measurement is the waist, or close to it. Personally, this kind of body evaluation doesn't work for everybody. I am an inverted triangle, but I also have a large bust and narrow shoulders, so emphasizing the bust is not desirable.
I choose styles that emphasize the shoulders and the neckline. Although, I avoid showing cleavage, I still look for a lower or more open neckline. A high neckline, such as crew neck or jewel neck tends to make the bust look lower and bulkier, not attractive or sexy at all. So a V-neck or a scoop neck is often good.
A wide belt in a dark color makes the waist look slimmer and a flared skirt hides the narrow hips and flat behind. Assymetrical lies balance out the body. And tunic length tops look best with the low waistline. Sweaters that end at the waist are always riding up and just look like I'm wearing the wrong size. As I have gotten older, these choices still work for me. Even with weight gain, if I avoid close fitting clothes, I can still wear these looks
