Volla Phone 22 - DeGoogled Android Phone

  • purchased a Volla Phone 22 which comes with Volla OS - a Google free version of Android for £495 (with a couple of extras + import tax).
    The retail price in Europe is €452
    You can choose between Volla OS or Ubuntu Touch at time of purchase, and there are two different colours - black and white.
    Having spent quite a few years with Android phones, I found the initial setup to be rather difficult and time consuming. There is no easy method to import Contacts, Messages, Browser Settings, and Photos from Android / iPhones.
    An issue with contacts app not sharing to phone and messaging apps has made the phone almost unusable for me.
    At this point I’m going back to my ageing Pixel phone.

    0:47 "You're losing out a lot of convenience"
    I guess it highly depends on your phone usage.
    There's another comment where someone mentioned that the best deal is to do everything you need on a computer instead of a phone, and I mostly agree with it as I barely use my "smartphone"; a computer is so much more comfortable to use.
    When I moved away from a more classical Android, into UT with Waydroid, I felt like I got the best out of the 2 worlds: 2 up-to-date operating systems (UT and LineageOS), freed from endless privacy settings, and a nice user experience (your mileage may vary).
    Now my phone is working great and I can do everything I want with it: texting, calling, mandatory banking 2FA. And in the off chance that I'm stuck in commuting where I can't set down and use my laptop, I can still draw out the phone and quickly browse Firefox.
    However, if what you want is to install loads of applications and using it intensively, then yeah, this is most likely not for you.

      For what it's worth, my previous phone was a Redmi Note 4, which had approximately the same size and same battery size.
      Speaking of which, battery wise, on UT, I seem to get as much battery usage as the Redmi, when I don't have Waydroid running (basically an entire week or even dozen of days worth of battery, since I have zero app running in the background, no wifi, no bluetooth, no GPS; just plain phone data).

    Welcome back and thanks for the video.
    There's no way on Earth that I would spend that kind of money on any phone, I believe the best "philosophy" for privacy is to take control of your computing properly, make "the dumbest phones that you can" and just do your proper "adult" computing on PCs and laptops running Linux.
    All my phones are de-Googled and are simply used for calls, texts, emails and some media consumption of stuff that is actually stored on the phone or sometimes streamed from my home server - no banking, no social media, no third party closed source apps.
    I have a Pixel 4a, Moto G7, Moto G4 and Moto E, the last two of which are burner phones that I "found" in "piles of junk" that I purchased on eBay - the most expensive phone was probably the G7 which cost me £150 on eBay about a year ago.
    As a result, my phones stay quiet most of the time and are not constantly demanding my attention. If I am out somewhere, I carry a small Thinkpad X220 with me running Gentoo Linux and if I need to go do some computing, I grab a coffee and sit down in a civilised manner with my laptop - occasionally looking out the window and laughing at all the "phone zombies" outside making a complete nuisance of themselves peering down at their tiny screens.
    I do my computing when I want to, not when the device tells me to.

    Out of curiosity, wasn't there a way to not use the springboard from VollaOS and switch to a more traditional Android view? That might fix your issue about not being able to share your notes.

    • @replacesoundboard
      @replacesoundboard ปีที่แล้ว

      There was another video where someone showed some kind of home view when long pressing the home button, which looked a lot like the more traditional app view on Android, although they didn't mention if it was by default or if it was a custom home view they installed.

  • @replacesoundboard
    @replacesoundboard ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It just came to me that there is one feature you did not mention (or at least I don't remember hearing you mentioning it; I'm going to rewatch the video just in case): the Volla OS has a multi-boot feature.
    Basically, if you feel like the Volla OS itself is not to your liking but the hardware itself looks nice, you could get -a basic LineageOS and even include Google Services- another operating system if you wanted to.

    • @TheLegendaryLore
      @TheLegendaryLore ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tanks for the info. I was on the fence about getting a Volla, but this is a very useful "feature".

    • @replacesoundboard
      @replacesoundboard ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheLegendaryLore Granted, it's a niche feature. Personally, I like it because I like Ubuntu Touch as a second operating system, but definitely not something that would matter if what you want is a "pocket computer.

    • @TheLegendaryLore
      @TheLegendaryLore ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@replacesoundboardExactly. I'd love to use only GNU/Linux on my phone - but I'm not yet sure if it would work with my requirements, so it'll be nice to also be able to boot to Android.

    • @replacesoundboard
      @replacesoundboard ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheLegendaryLore Word of caution though: for UT, it's an ARM64 Linux, and you could also install Waydroid (an emulated Android with less functionality), so it might be missing a lot of features.
      I was daily driving it since November but decided to switch over to Volla OS (although Volla 12.1 doesn't have functional mutli-boot yet, but soon).
      Some of the Linux apps were mighty useful, such as the one that allowed me to use my phone as a bootable driver to install a new OS on a laptop.

    Glad you’re back! 6:17 I believe that’s just an Android issue. Back when I used to use Android I had this problem every time I switched phones. There would be a discrepancy between the contacts in the contacts app and the contacts in the phone app due to the set of contacts imported to the phone being stored separately from the contacts synced from my Google account. And of course I could never remember how I solved the problem each time.
    Perhaps this issue you have is related to that, i.e. the contacts transferred to the phone went to the contacts app but the phone app is looking for contacts in a nonexistent Google account. Take a look through the phone app settings and see if there’s anything related to contacts in there.

      @replacesoundboard ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this case, you should buy the Gigaset phone this is based on directly, because it's less expensive. People mentioned being able to purchase it and install VollaOS themselves.
      The only advantage to buying from Volla is having the company installing VollaOS or UT for us. That, and having Volla logo on the device, along with official support in case of OS bugs.
      Otherwise, you could buy with VollaOS and use multiboot.
      Personally, I bought it with UT and installed Waydroid to use LineageOS through it.
