Back in the 1990s there were sooo many terrible Planters Punches that were overly heavy on OJ and even pineapple juice. The version you're doing especially with Jamaica rum is the way to go. Agree also that the El Presidente is really underrated. The Jet Pilot is a great choice, though it is best served with a flame in a spent lime shell. Great choices overall for these cocktails. I can't tell you how many times I asked for a "shaken lime daiquiri" and get told "we don't have a blender." Oy vey.
I discovered this version of the daiquiri on my honeymoon and fell in love with it. I'm a massive rum and lime fan so to discover this was like finding my perfect cocktail. Love that you highlighted it here as I don't see a lot of people talking about it.
I was helping my girlfriend explore different rums and used a nice small daquiri for each one (it was a very fun night with 14 of my favorite bottles getting showcased). It helps get a general taste of rums without having to choke through the complexity of tasting neat alcohol.
I'll admit I was a rum hater for a while. My only real experience with rum was basically bacardi and cheaper spiced rum. Finally got me a nice demerara rum and have been experimenting with tiki cocktails there's a lot to love I missed out on!
More and more, I've seen the jungle bird show up in non-tiki cocktail bars, so maybe it's getting it's due. But it is one of my favorite drinks period and I would love to be able to order it anytime I am in the mood, especially since it does not require any non-standard ingredients. Also so many great possibilities for tweaking it with different rums and flavors (coffee for instance)
Love them all. The El Presidente can be a bit of an acquired taste and require some adjustment to preferences - The first one I made I wondered what I was going to do with a whole bottle of blanc vermouth, but every attempt since then has been better and better.
Terrific video. I like that you did the punch. It really is underrated. Didn't see El Presidente coming but yes, yes. Great cocktail you don't see too often. I had a superb one at Cafe La Trova in Miami.
Jet Pilot >> Zombie. Sure it has less rum, but I find it's more balanced and still packs a punch. Highly recommend the Mai Kai Jet Pilot too, it's worth the effort!
I don't make hurricanes often, but when I do, I like adding a barspoon or two of the syrup from a jar of Luxardo cherries (or other similar high-end cocktail cherries). A little extra sweetness helps round the edges off the tartness and the cherry syrup adds a little of that red fruit/Hawaiian Punch note from more modern formulations.
The pan am is good cocktail that's a modern classic that doesn't get enough love. Lime juice, white rum, aperol egg white or Aquafaba. You're suppsed to use bacardi for this but I like to use an agricole Bologne black cane.
Love the Rum Old Fashioned (blend of aged Dem and Jamaican rums + Passionfruit syrup) and the Improved Rum Cocktail (Marschino, Passionfruit, spritz of Absinthe).
I live an hour or so from New Orleans and I always have a Pat OBriens bottle of Hurricane mix on my bar. I need to make some passion fruit syrup and try it with dark rum now!
Great video. I would add the Palmetto. Underrecognized and understated. Most service staff look at you with a puzzled look when I try yo order one. I finally found a bar that made the best one I've ever had. This one had ratios not true to the recipe. It was made with 3 of Plateray dark, 1/2 sweet vermouth, 3 dashes orange bitters.
Great list and fun video , I have to try a jet pilot now, I’ve been into mai tai’s and daiquiris , but the extra syrups in a jet pilot have been a hurdle , but I’ve been inspired
These are all great cocktails! Thanks for recap, it gives me an excuse to make one a day (two?) for the next week! … And finally, I’m one of the cool ones? Lol.
In punches I really like leaning on things like tea's for the weak, herbal, black, white, green, whichever suits the punch best but it helps add interesting background instead of just water.
Fantastic first 5 - love El Presidente, Daiquiri, Hurricane. Easy go-tos for me. Jet Pilot's great as well! Do need to try more Planter's Punches though.
Reporting back - having a Planter’s Punch with S+C and I don’t regret a thing. (And a thanks to Shannon Mustipher for suggesting the rum in her Tiki book.)
3/6 are in my standard repertoir. The El Presidente is one of the few stirred rum cocktails I've come across, especially if you exclude "like an X but with rum"-type cocktails.
Try and tackle the Dark and Stormy and Cuba Libré if you haven’t already. I remember you mentioning the former once. Shame about Gosling’s. I’d love to see the Ti Punch and Corn n’ Oil discussed too.
I feel good because I've made all of these but the Jet Pilot. The Presidenti is one of my favorites because of the Vermouth. What about The Rum Runner and Knickerbocker for the next installment.
Presidente - featured on Boardwalk Empire many moons ago, at the time Pierre Ferrand was re-working the recipe for Dry Curacao as it would have tasted over a century ago. Planter's Punch - when I switched to "craft" in 2007, my majority of patron clientle were already in their upper 70s. This, along with many "classics" was educated down to me by those who lived in the era of popularity. My Godmother was bartending in Miami in the 1960-1980s, the Zombie & Hurricane she has replicated what I use behind the bar. Different/available ingredients from this video but not far off. And she wants to say she hates the 'tapioca pearl' ice. Daiquiri is perfection for all rum drinks.
I think the opposite direction, flavored and frozen daiquiris are severely underrated by the craft cocktail scene - would recommend anything from Manolito in NOLA, they do a strawberry daiquiri with fresh strawberries and st Germain as an accent. I would also recommend Nico de Soto's Pineapple Daiquiri. I also think Guayaba Daiquiris are severely unknown - especially with a dash of absinthe to round it out. Manolito swamp water is also amazing similar story to a hurricane where it turned into green sweet thing instead of herbal and rummy. Frozen Painkiller, so easy to turn from eh to out of this world. Similar as daquari known just not that quality. Royal Hawaiian Gin + Rum mix comes out amazing
I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to follow those Jet Pilot specs exactly. Something in the alchemy of that drink MESSES ME UP if I don’t get the rum types exactly bang on. It doesn’t even have that much alcohol compared to other tiki drinks.
I used Appleton Signature as I don't have any Puerto Rican rums, Blackwell for dark Jamaica rum and OFTD for the overproof Demerara. (Pusser's 151 would overpower everything). Haven't tried the original, but this is not bad. Pretty boozy, but fruity and chocolaty and mokka notes from the Blackwell
I love the “rum substitutes”/Mr. Potato Head cocktails with rum. A Kingston Negroni is outstanding. Rum Old Fashioned, as previously mentioned. My favorite is the Almost Famous, the Last Word riff/equal parts cocktail with Rum Fire, Yellow Chartreuse, Aperol, and Lime. It is worth finding a bottle of Yellow Chartreuse for this cocktail alone!
I really want to make that Hurricane, but unsure of what rum to use, since I'd want to approximate your infinity blend somewhat closely... I guess it's time for some "science."
The Presidente is the rum cocktail that I always THINK I will like based on the recipe, but then it feels like it's really flabby to me with no acid. Which would be so easy to change, but it also wouldn't be the Presidente any more if you randomly added citrus. So I don't know what to do about it.
This is my dream, especially now with Maga fangirls all over 🇺🇸 ... retirement in Barbados, and create every rum cocktail until I'm 💀 . 🎉 👋... btw, not only do I want the drinks, I'll take the shirt too... Jet Pilot sounds 60s sexy.
Want to try Planters Punch, Hurricane and Jet Pilot. I tried OG Daiquiri and found I love Stiggins Pineapple rum version, YUM !! Lastly, a good drink that needs more love is Beach Bum Barry's Grog Log, WAIKIKIAN. Derek, I think ull like it :)

YES BABY HE FINALLY DID THE JET PILOT
had this a few months ago at Tiki Tiki Chicago and I haven’t stopped thinking about it. My favorite drink ever
"Volume 1" of infinite volumes.
It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world
@@makeanddrink That’s what she said!
I’m a huge Jet Pilot fan! It was my first drink I ordered at Smugglers Cove!
I discovered this version of the daiquiri on my honeymoon and fell in love with it. I'm a massive rum and lime fan so to discover this was like finding my perfect cocktail. Love that you highlighted it here as I don't see a lot of people talking about it.
The Daiquiri is how I test my new rums, since there isnt much to cover the rum notes. And it's so simple and easy, and delicious in the summer.
The Cobra's Fang is another great drink that is totally lesser-known.
Love this list! Planter’s Punch, Jet Pilot, and Daiquiris are in my top 5 rum cocktails.
The Hurricane umbrella…nice touch 😅
I was helping my girlfriend explore different rums and used a nice small daquiri for each one (it was a very fun night with 14 of my favorite bottles getting showcased). It helps get a general taste of rums without having to choke through the complexity of tasting neat alcohol.
Jet pilot has become my drink of the fall. The perno and cinnamon work so well together. After I finished my first I had to make another🍹🍹
I'll admit I was a rum hater for a while. My only real experience with rum was basically bacardi and cheaper spiced rum. Finally got me a nice demerara rum and have been experimenting with tiki cocktails there's a lot to love I missed out on!

I chanced upon planters punch thanks to smugglers cove book and it made it to my top 5 tiki cocktail list, that simple!
I don't make hurricanes often, but when I do, I like adding a barspoon or two of the syrup from a jar of Luxardo cherries (or other similar high-end cocktail cherries). I had everything for a Planters Punch ... and just made one. Yeah, thats tasty. 😊 Thanks
The Jet Pilot is my absolute favorite drink, had it for the first time at Inferno Room and its been my go to ever since
I swear by the Embury daiquiri ratio of 8-2-1. Suits my palate just right.
The Jet Pilot is one of my favorite Tiki cocktails! I also love a good Hurricane but, I prefer Fassionola instead of Passionfruit syrup.

Just got that Comoz vermouth and I love it! Can't wait to make this.
Great video!! I’ll give the president a try!
I see you upped your lime to a full part for a daiquiri instead of 3/4. Keeping us on our toes. 😂
I know it's borderline obscure, but I really love the Pahoehoe 😋
3/6 are in my standard repertoir. The El Presidente is one of the few stirred rum cocktails I've come across, especially if you exclude "like an X but with rum"-type cocktails.
Jet Pilot is hands down my favorite tiki drink. Love seeing it get more exposure.
Love a Jet Pilot, Planter's Punch and a Daiquiri
Great video/tutorial. THANK YOU.
Planters Punch...YES!
Dolin Blanc also makes a great El Presidente.
All fantastic drinks! Derek, is that lime superjuice you are using? Thanks!
I’ll never tell
And thanks!
I'd love to see the Pina Colada get the same appreciation and return to refinement as the daiquiri.
You don’t miss.
Try and tackle the Dark and Stormy and Cuba Libré if you haven’t already. I remember you mentioning the former once. Shame about Gosling’s. I’d love to see the Ti Punch and Corn n’ Oil discussed too.
Rum is WAY better than whiskey
It’s just true. It is by far the best spirit
Tasty! Love the Jet Pilot :D
Thought I was watching g How to Drink with the big ice cube crack at the beginning. Awesome video with some great drinks.
I feel good because I've made all of these but the Jet Pilot. The Presidenti is one of my favorites because of the Vermouth. What about The Rum Runner and Knickerbocker for the next installment.

Daiquiri is perfection for all rum drinks.
Maybe it’s the season but I follow!
For the daiquiri, are you using 1 heaping tsp of powdered bar sugar in place of 1.5 tsp?
I drink 3 out 5 of those regularly but never hear anyone talking about the White Cloud which I drink regularly as well.
I always find a way to put the El presidente back on the menu lol

@ I got off Smugglers Cove, which in my liquor cabinet is heavily Demerara.
El Dorado 12, Hamilton 86, and OFTD

I am a fan of margaritas. But not those blended, frozen monstrosities! I like a real margarita. I’d love to see an exploration of that.

I prefer the Hotel Nacional to the Presidente.
Okay okay okay can someone explain the powdered sugar for the daiquiri to me?
Rum balls are underrated.
This is a lie
Ew
Always flor de cana 4 year white daiquiri. Dry but not breaking the bank. Jet pilot is great, but not as good as a well built Mai Tai to me.
This is my dream, especially now with Maga fangirls all over 🇺🇸 ... retirement in Barbados, and create every rum cocktail until I'm 💀 . 🎉 👋... btw, not only do I want the drinks, I'll take the shirt too... Jet Pilot sounds 60s sexy.
you like sirrup i like missups
#teampowderedsugar
Hell yeah, brother.
What is the benefit of powdered sugar instead of simple for this?
@@jamesvorel9806 less dilution, extra love
@@jamesvorel9806 a lower _starting_ dilution for any cocktail you use it in over simple, which will seem obvious once you think about it. 😉
Soooo a Planter’s Punch is a daiquiri’s bitter boozy uncle lol
There's nothing wrong with calling the daiquiri underrated. The average person doesn't have a clue.
